China publicizes for the first time what it claims is a 2016 agreement with Philippines - ABC News https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/china-publicizes-time-claims-2016-agreement-philippines-109902201

For the first time, China has publicized what it claims is an unwritten 2016 agreement with the #Philippines over access to South China Sea islands.

Ah yes, unwritten agreements... The PRC does have experience with those, like the ominous "1992 consensus" regarding Taiwan...

A statement from the Chinese Embassy in Manila said the “temporary special arrangement” agreed to during a visit to Beijing by former president Rodrigo Duterte allowed small scale fishing around the islands but restricted access by military, coast guard and other official planes and ships to the 12 nautical mile (22 kilometer) limit of territorial waters.

Who in their right mind would agree to that?😲

Ah, another trick...

China claims South China Sea deal with Philippines' Duterte - Nikkei Asia https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/International-relations/South-China-Sea/China-claims-South-China-Sea-deal-with-Philippines-Duterte

BEIJING/MANILA -- China and the Philippines entered a "gentleman's agreement" to avoid conflict in the South China Sea under former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines said Thursday, in a revelation that could be aimed at rattling the current administration in Manila.

Under the agreement, which isn't recognized by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Manila apparently promised not to repair or build structures at Second Thomas Shoal in the disputed Spratly Islands, which the Philippines effectively controls.

In return, Beijing agreed not to interfere with deliveries of food and other supplies to a Philippine warship there.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I see it, the PRC interferes heavily with any food delivery. Not keeping your end of the "agreement", but demanding others to do it?

In a statement on Thursday, the Chinese Embassy acknowledged that the deal was made during the Duterte administration. Referring to the pact as a "gentlemen's agreement," the embassy said it was "no secret" and was aimed at "managing the situation on the ground, maintaining peace and preventing conflicts."

Seriously? An "oral agreement ", that you claim is no secret, but that you don't adhere to? And you demand others not to break it? Have anything in writing? You know, the Philippines has something in writing, an ICJ decision saying you're occupying their territory...

Philippines urged to resolve South China Sea disputes through dialogue - CGTN https://news.cgtn.com/news/2024-04-04/Philippines-urged-to-resolve-South-China-Sea-disputes-through-dialogue-1swcpAnSYHC/p.html
Oh the hypocrisy! What that headline actually says is "Surrender! Give up and let us have what we want!" Which is all of the South China Sea, including portions of the PH EEZ. No need to read the article, CGTN expresses the views of the CCP. Which can also be seen in the image description:

A Philippine vessel approaches a China Coast Guard vessel in a dangerous manner and leads to a bump in waters off China's Ren'ai Jiao in the Nansha Qundao in the South China Sea, October 22, 2023.

Since bigger ships are usually less manoeuvrable, the general rule is that smaller boats have to yield. A coastguard ship is however way faster and I'd say also more agile than that little PH boat. When you look at the photo, it's pretty clear who approached whom. "Sir, the deceased was so rude to throw himself right onto my sword!"

And look at all those Chinese names they use in English, when nobody has ever heard of them. This should probably give the impression that the Philippines are intruding into PRC waters, not the other way around.

Vietnam objects to China's expanded reach in Gulf of Tonkin https://www.voanews.com/a/vietnam-objects-to-china-expanded-reach-in-gulf-of-tonkin/7549424.html

While the immediate implications of China's latest sea grab are limited, the experts say it could have implications for freedom of navigation in the region, and in an extreme case, Beijing could seek to apply the principle to declare the Taiwan Strait as Chinese coastal waters.

Vietnam has recognised the problem. I wonder when others will...

China's defense ministry warns Philippines after South China Sea incident | Taiwan News | 2024-03-24 17:19:00 https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/5121946

BEIJING (Reuters) — China's defense ministry warned the Philippines against "provocative" actions and said China would safeguard its territorial sovereignty on Sunday, a day after an incident in disputed waters of the South China Sea.

"We warn the Philippines to stop making any remarks that may lead to the intensification of conflicts and escalation of the situation, and stop all infringing and provocative actions," the defense ministry said in a statement.

Translation: Shut up and stay at home, because we want your territory!

So, what happened?

The remarks came after China's coast guard said had it taken measures against Philippine vessels in disputed waters near the Second Thomas Shoal and Spratly Islands a day before, actions that the Philippines had called "irresponsible and provocative".

The incident included the use of water cannons against a civilian boat hired to resupply troops, the Philippine task force on the South China Sea said in a statement on Saturday.

FYI: We are talking about the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines, an area including everything within 200nm from the shore. For comparison: It's 1000km to the PRC coast. Or in other words: This is ridiculous. But if no other country assists the Philippines, the outcome is pretty clear.

China Attacks Philippine Ship, Injures Crew in Latest Escalation of South China Sea Standoff - USNI News https://news.usni.org/2024/03/23/china-attacks-philippine-ship-injures-crew-in-latest-escalation-of-south-china-sea-standoff

Chinese attempts to stop the Philippine resupply missions have escalated since they began last summer. While Manila has strengthened its defense and security relations with the U.S., Australia and Japan and brought the issue to international headlines through a media campaign, China has doubled down on its efforts through the deployment of new measures and increasing the amount of vessels deployed to block the missions.

“We need to start calling this what it is–China’s illegal blockade of an outpost within the Philippines’ own lawful exclusive economic zone,” Ray Powell, director of the SeaLight project at Stanford University’s Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation, told USNI News following today’s incident.

It's getting worse...

China Quietly Annexes Northeast Corner of Gulf of Tonkin https://maritime-executive.com/article/china-quietly-annexes-northeast-corner-of-gulf-of-tonkin

Affected this time is: Taiwan Philippines Vietnam international waters

Earlier this month, China quietly turned a swathe of the Gulf of Tonkin into an extension of Chinese internal waters, simply by declaring a new baseline across the gulf's northeastern end. If Beijing's unilateral declaration stands, a crescent-shaped area extending up to 50 nautical miles from the Chinese coast will be fully subject to China's domestic laws.

While no specific country was affected, this is highly dangerous: If nobody protests, the PRC will use this as their new standard and the next time either a country or international shipping may be the victim.

China says Philippines ignored South China Sea proposal as tensions rise

The report said China's proposal included allowing Filipino resupply missions to the Second Thomas Shoal, as long as it involves just one ship and that it does not deliver large-scale building materials.

Hahaha! This is a "One-China-Policy", "Second Thomas Shoal Edition"! Basically it says: "You guys are not allowed to change the current status. If you do, we go to war. And if we feel like it, we will change the status in our favour, maybe through war." Taiwan welcomes you to the club, Philippines!
