"Bundesservice Telekommunikation" ist Behörde des Verfassungsschutzes

Vor einigen Jahren hatten wir uns schon über die "Hauptstelle für Befragungswesen" (HBW) gewundert, die direkt dem Kanzleramt untersteht. Diese Hauptstelle war für die ausführliche Befragung von Asylbewerbern zuständig. Die Sicherheitsexpertin und Aktivistin Lilith Wittmann hat nun nachgeforscht, wem der "Bundesservice Telekommunikation" untersteht. Das war nicht einfach und ihre Nachforschungen wurden beamtlicher-seits auch wenig unterstützt.

Zuerst einmal stellte sie fest, dass die Behörde über kein E-Mail-Postfach, kein Amtsschild am Briefkasten, keine konkrete Zuständigkeit und kein Budget verfügt. Also war Findigkeit gefragt. Um zu beweisen, dass das Bundesamt für den Verfassungsschutz (BfV) dahinter steckt, war die Erkenntnis, dass die IP Adressen des "Amts" aus dem gleichen Bereich wie die des BfV kommen nicht ausreichend.

Also musste ein sogenannter "Airtags" her, ein Ortungsgerät von Apple. Das ist ein frei verkäuflicher Peilsender. Lilith Wittmann versteckte ihn in einer Postsendung und schickte ihn an ein angegebenes Postfach. Von dort wurde das Paket zum Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz in Köln weiter geleitet.

Wie t-online.de berichtet, bestreitet ein Sprecher des Bundesministeriums in einer Bundespressekonferenz mehrfach, dass es sich beim "Bundesservice Telekommunikation" um eine "Behörde" im Zuständigkeitsbereich des Innenministeriums oder der Bundesregierung handelt.

Wir leben in einer Demokratie - da sind verschiedene Meinungen und Wahrheiten scheinbar üblich ...

Auf zur fröhlichen #Airtag Suche...

Sind die Dinger denn so billig, dass man mir uninteressanten Typen beim Einkauf sowas in die Tasche packen muss? Immerhin habe ich es noch nicht direkt gefunden. Nicht dass es in der Fleischwurst versteckt ist. 🤣 Immerhin, wenn ich es finde, habe ich was zum Basteln...

Samsung has SmartTag Bluetooth trackers, but you may want to use Tile trackers instead if you are on Android

Samsung phones are probably the most prolific Android phones circulating out there so could have the same advantage as Apple AirTags if the tracking was built-in to the OS... but it is not. It requires firstly that an app must be installed (like Tile) but it further only works on Samsung Galaxy devices (not all Samsung phones and not on any other Android phones).

So coverage-wise Tile is still a way better bet for Android users, and at the end of the day a lost tag's chance of being found is only as good as the number of potential detection devices circulating nearby.

I'd hope that Apple's move would spark something similar on Android devices but due to that either requires Google baking something into Android OS (that OEMs could disable if they choose to, or OEMs bake it into their brand phone eg. Samsung.

No need to panic about Google tracking you with this, as they already can/do via the OS. Apple has a set a good bar on privacy at least for 3rd party tracking, or misusing AirTags to track others (well if they have an Apple phone that is).

Apple announces AirTag for finding your lost items - Big Plus is the Network and Privacy, but it is Pricey

Apple certainly seems to have taken location tags to a new level with the security and privacy features, as well as built-in speaker. The biggest plus though is that they can leverage off an almost global presence of iPhones constantly moving around, unlike all other trackers which rely on others having installed the specific application.

Apple said AirTag keeps location data private and secure. No location data or history is stored inside the accessory, and communication with the Find My network is end-to-end encrypted. Apple said AirTag has also been design with a set of proactive features that discourage unwanted tracking.

This could likely change the game a bit for location trackers as 3rd party tags can also make use of the network. But it is not at all cheap at $29 each or $99 for a pack on 4.
