Fred has grown all sorts of stuff in his greenhouse including dragon fruit and figs. Our house and yard is full of plants but I can barely keep an ivy alive. What is the most unusual thing you, or in my case a family member, has grown?

What is a memorable movie for you? For many it’s movies like The Godfather, Star Wars or the first movie date with a future long relationship. For me it's True Lies, I saw it the last day my mom was alive. I don't know what to be most grateful for…the moments of distraction from the movie, not being in the way of HCW when she left or the time to say goodbye.

Welcome to #CheckIn for Monday, October 11

Welcome to a new work week...for Canadians it’s Thanksgiving Day but I’ve been thinking about work a lot since Fred just returned to his old workplace for a 6 month contract. Then I started thinking about sticking to decisions. I tend to not bother to make a change until I’m really serious then I make the effort. Retire? Work hard then stop (pretty well). Quitting smoking, I just smoked until one day I realized all my excuses no longer applied so I stopped. Fred quit smoking many times until we stopped together and stayed stopped…so far.

Do you tend to do practice runs at change or do you think about it then make it happen? Do you have tips on changing?

It's important to be able to laugh at yourself. We got cross back aprons for food preparation. They’re great because you don't have a ties to deal with. Not great because every time I put it on I get in a tangle. We both practiced putting them on and taking them off and STILL struggle What is an activity you are so bad at it makes you laugh every time?

With streaming, there are new series and seasons starting all the time but this is the traditional time for new TV series on US-based TV. New series like CSI: Vegas, Ghosts, and LaBrea along with returning shows like The Rookie (I only know because I watch a lot of Sci-Fi regular TV)

How do you keep track of shows you want to make sure you see…especially with them moving from network to streaming (Lucifer, Manifest, etc)

Welcome to #Checkin for Wednesday, October 6th, 2021!

Why howdy there #Checkin people!

Today is my last day here as moderator, so I thought I’d just open it up without a topic. Feel free to comment about anything at all.

I’ve been reading a couple of books, and just picked another up at the library. Not that I have a lot of time to read with a painting commission, a website to do, an outbuilding repair and remodel, and a big garden project that needs completion.
The painting commission is a cluster of small portraits of the same subject from different vantage points. The website is for another artist who has neither the time, inclination, nor the ability to create their own. The outbuilding is one I let go as the city had informed me that it may have to come down, and now tells me it may remain. To say that it has a lot of deferred maintenance barely describes its condition. Needs a new roof, windows, and a fresh door. I’ve only done the stripping of the roof shingles and one window removal.
The garden project is the big one. I need to grade an area about 200sq/ft in order to lay down a field of pavers upon which I plan to build a larger screen house. I built a small one before, an 8’ tall 4’x8’ enclosure I used to test grow some plants in, to see if it would not only protect the plants from pest infection, but also provide enough light and air for a healthy, productive harvest. I plan on building a 10’ tall 12’x12’ in which to raise six plants in some 10 gallon buckets.
Other than that, there is a little grey cat that I’m trying to coax into moving in with there three little kittens. Oh my gosh are they adorable. Two have white socks and booties, one is all grey, and all are totally squee. Not that I need to have eight cats, as with the four I have, their addition would catapult me well over the border into Crazy Cat Lady Territory, but hey.

Why howdy there #Checkin people! Today is World Teacher’s Day, and Taco Tuesday!

World Teachers’ Day seeks to raise awareness about the teaching profession and the challenges they face. The day commemorates the 1966 ILO (International Labor Organization) and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) recommendation concerning the status of teachers. This recommendation sets a standard regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers.
Teaching has transformed from a simple educational function into a complex profession. The history of teaching can be traced to Confucious (561 B.C.), who was the first famous private teacher. Many ancient Greeks hired private teachers to educate their children. In the Middle Ages, learning institutions such as Cambridge University were founded and teacher training became required.
I grew up in a marginal minority neighborhood and attended substandard schools. It’s a wonder that I received any education at all. Had it not been for being an early and voracious reader, I would likely know very little. As someone on the spectrum, it wasn’t like I did that interface or participation thing very well. I tended to be a behavior problem under normal classroom situations. To say I could be disruptive at times is an understatement.
There were teachers who made a difference. One was Mr. Archibald Taylor, a dapper gentleman who taught middle school art. He arranged for me to attend weekend art classes at various sites. Looking back, it was Mr. Taylor who is my favorite teacher. For one, in art class, drawing in class was okay, something I was frequently punished for doing in other classes. Drawing made me calm, allowed me be present without too much agitation. He encouraged me to practice drawing every day, which is how I came to make my way in the world.

Why howdy there #Checkin people! Today is National Taco Day! I apologize for the late #Checkin. My laptop went on the fritz.

The Name “Taco” is a modern invention. It originated from Mexican silver miners in the 18th century. Gunpowder was wrapped in a paper like a “taquito” and inserted into rocks before detonation. Tacos were known as the food of the working class, which included miners. The act of folding a comestible into a tortilla existed prior to the naming, it’s just that the name that is new. The eating food in or with a corn tortilla is thousands of years old, as tortillas have been around for many millennia.
Mayan legend says that the first tortilla was a gift. A peasant invented the corn tortilla as a present for his hungry king over 12,000 years ago. In the ancient highlands of modern Mexico, tortillas were a staple in both Mayan and Aztec diets.
My favorite taco is Tacos Al Pastor. Al pastor means shepherd style.
Tacos Al Pastor is made with spit-grilled pork. Cooking method is based on the lamb shawarma brought by Lebanese immigrants to Mexico, al pastor features a flavor palate that uses traditional Mexican marinade adobada.
Adobada is generally pork marinated in a red chile sauce with vinegar and oregano, but can refer to different types of meat, and to marinades closer to al pastor. Adobo or adobar (marinade, sauce, or seasoning) is the immersion of raw food in a stock (or sauce) composed variously of paprika, oregano, salt, garlic, and vinegar to preserve and enhance its flavor.
It's a popular street food that's spread to the United States. In some places of northern and coastal Mexico, such as in Baja California, it is known as taco de adobada. A similar dish from Puebla is called tacos árabes, or "Arab tacos.

Why howdy there #Checkin people! Let’s talk about movies.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved movies. Sitting in the dark while the images move on the screen, the light of the projector flickering overhead. My grandparents were movie buffs, and would take us every Sunday after church. We’d go to a deli and have lunch, and head to the theatre. When I was a street crossing guard in elementary school, we were taken to the movies once a month, which was good and all, but the other kids were so rowdy that it wasn’t a great experience. I did get to see some great kids films though.
But due to the pandemic, I haven’t sat in a movie theatre in quite a long time. The last feature I saw in a theatre was The King, with Timothee Chalamet, which I thoroughly enjoyed. In November '19, I think. I really wanted to see The Last Black Man in San Francisco, but missed it, since it was in and out of the theatres is a remarkably short time.
I have a few directors that I follow and see everything they produce. Some actors too. If I see some director is using a cinematographer I like, I’ll check that out too. I tend to pay attention to writers and source material as well.
It's probably going to be a very long time before I feel comfortable seeing a film in a movie theater. Instead, I’ve been streaming a lot of movies. I haven’t been finding many American films to be particularly satisfying. Don't even get me started about dystopian movies, as they've been headed downhill since 1985. I’m so tired of the trope-filled, run-of-the-mill features on offering through the regular streaming services, but I’m not yet ready to pay the subscription costs for the premium ones. I will when there’s a movie I just can’t miss. Like Denzel Washington and Francis MacDormand in The Scottish Play, or the new James Bond flick on AppleTV. Or Dune on HBO Max!

Have you seen any good films lately? What kind of movies do you like? Do you Have a favorite director? Actor? Cinematographer? Do you pay attention to things like framing and composition while watching a film?
I’m only asking because I’m looking for new and/or different things to things to watch.

Why howdy there #Checkin people! It’s National Name Your Car Day!

National Name Your Car Day encourages us to make a special commitment to our wheels. It sounds crazy to me, but studies have shown that when we name inanimate objects, like our cars, we assign almost human-like attributes that make us feel more in control.
My sister has named all of her automobiles. The first car she had was Kabubi, a Japanese word meaning Stock Date. Don't ask. I have no idea why she named it that. It was a 1963 Chevrolet Biscayne 2-door hardtop with a 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 with the 3-speed Powerglide automatic. That thing was a real goer. She had a lead foot like all the women in our family who take after our grandmother in that fashion. She'd take us all out for her version of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

I’ve had a few cars over the years, but I’d never named one. While I think it’s a cute thing to do, I don’t see how giving my Prius a name is going to make me feel more in control. What, in control of the car? I guess I don’t get the concept. Thinking back, I can’t recall having any particular feelings of attachment to vehicles other than responsibility of ownership.
Although I was particularly fond of one motorcycle, a 1981 CB-750C that I used to cruise PCH from border to border, Tijuana to Vancouver. It was my main ride for a couple of decades until the motor was beyond rebuilding at over 300K mi. Then there was a mid-‘70s BMW 2002 I still miss, but that's only because I was able to recover it after my ex-wife stole it and sold it on back-dated paper to her friends during our divorce. I eventually used it’s sale to pay off my attorney. I had done a lot of custom performance engine and transmission work. The body and interior was in great condition, and it fetched a very good price. Nowadays it could go for above $35K, but I'd rather have an electric car.
I keep some momentos, touchstones really, to remind me of places or events, but the attachment is to the memory, not the thing itself.

Why howdy there #Checkin people! It’s International Coffee Day, and marks the last day of Oktoberfest.
There are only 85 days until Christmas. That's 2 months and 24 days. Yikes!

Today is a traditional date for monumental beer drinking in this part of US, where most folks seem to have that Oktoberfest thing kind of backwards. It’s supposed to start in mid-September, run for a couple of weeks, and end on October 1st. But no, apparently that's too complicated for Americans. Around here I think the town of La Mesa is the only one that starts it early. Most others in the county start on or after this date, which is kinda weird if they're trying to do the traditional German thing.
While I’m sure it’s not nearly as fun I imagine it to be Germany, people do seem to have a good time with it. There will be plenty of landhausmode, dirndl and lederhosen. Too much funnel cake, bratwursts and spaetzel. I’m not sure that holding celebrations around the county this year is such a good idea. We still have a 7-day average of like 450 cases.
Of course the one in Munich’s Theisenweisse is cancelled due to pandemic, just like last year. We can’t have a super spreader event that hosts as many as 6 million attendees now can we? Munich isn’t Sturgis. And funnel cake isn't even German. It's like a Pennsylvania Dutch thing, and American invention.

As for international Coffee Day, the USA held their National Coffee Day on Wednesday. I chalk the disparity up to America’s refusal to accept the metric system. It's why we've crashed a probe on Mars.

Welcome to #Checkin for Thursday, September 30th, 2021!

Why howdy there #Checkin people! It’s my birthday!

Today I have completed my 69th orbit around the Sun. We don’t have anything special planned, but will likely pull out all of the stops when (and if) I turn 70 next year. That’s a big number. How did I get here? I’m certainly no kid anymore.

The thing I miss most about birthdays of my youth, are the cakes my grandmother used to make me. She was no baker, but she did her best. One year she made a Devils food chocolate cake with raspberry filing and lemon icing, and topped it off with electric blue lettering. It was a little lopsided, some of the cake showed through the icing, and the lettering and blue edging wasn't remotely right.

I. Loved. It.

I told grandmother that it was my favorite cake, and that she could make it for me every year, which she did until she could no longer get to get to the kitchen. Over the years she had perfected it. But that last year, though, after I had moved back to San Diego to take care of her, the cake was a visual mess. The flavors, however, were better than ever. She had really had gotten that part of it down. Chocolatey, lemony, raspberry Heaven.
After she was gone, other people baked that cake for me. I’ve even had it ordered for me special, but it was never the same. That’s because granny didn’t make it.

Valerie turns 65 in November, so I’ve got something big planned. Do you till celebrate birthdays with a cake? If not, what do you do? Do you even celebrate them? Some do not. Of course, the topic is open. Have fun!

Theme of the day if you choose to pick up the gaunlet: for most of us, our days continue to be challenging. What is one thing that lightens your heart? (more than one is always appreciated.) You know it's perfectly all right NOT to chat about the theme of the day, right? 😂

Pour moi, I feel blessed to be in the company of dogs in my neighbourhood. It's uncanny how they know when we humans need to be cheered up or need company. I'm certain they love hearing us laugh too. Aside: I feel the same way about cats. Only, there are very few cats here.

Hey, we haven't talked about food for a while. A universal dish throughout the world (I think) is soup, don't you think? No matter the region, culture, weather or latititude/longitude, there is a tasty soup to be enjoyed and discussed. What is your favourite soup or one that comes to mind? Feel free to share recipes, descriptions, associated stories or memories.

The soup in the picture below is Mohinga, known affectionately as the national dish of Myanmar. It is a very flavourful fish base noodles soup. There are every day versions eaten at any meal, or very elaborate versions cooked to celebrated special events such as birthdays.

Welcome to #Checkin for Saturday, September 25, 2021!

@0ms 3ph hit the nail on the head - what we all need now is comedy or ways to raise our spirits given what we're likely going to face for another season. This forum has been amazing for providing uplifting company 'round the clock, prior to and especially during the depth of the covid surges, so let's continue! Right at the beginning of the pandemic we realized quickly covid was a shared experience regardless of time zone. We've learned a lot from each other and experienced so much together!

I wish I had my iphone ready while walking over to a neighbour's to share an outdoor meal with a few others this evening. I came across another group of neighbours at the other end of the street where I live, who had all brought out their lawn chairs, spaced out well in a rough circle taking up much of the street. They were having a lovely time. The scene reminded me of evenings in Malta when residents would regularly take a kitchen chair outside their homes and sit on the cobblestone streets to converse with neighbours. I think many of us are feeling the need to connect regularly after the long period of isolation. Hence your ideas on ways to have meaningful times with others while keeping safe are invaluable to all.

Of course, being #checkin, everyone's free to express things on your mind unrelated to the theme of the day. Also, let's not forget #caturday and #goaturday! 😄

❤️ Deep felt thanks to @Carsten Raddatz (劉愷恩) for jumping in to give me a break of one more day before my turn in hosting #Checkin this time. It's weird to need a break before starting a turn which I normally look forward to, especially after a lovely week away, but let's say for now that I was shaken from a totally unexpected event on the 22nd. I'll tell you about it when I can. In the meantime, let's check in to what's happening around this world of ours.
