Following an unexpected turn of events I am your host today. Its been quite some time since I hosted #checkin, but I'm happy to see you all in this role, from the other side of a post that is. :) So given the timing, whatever topic is on your mind, go with it, if you may. Autumn is starting, and we have noticeably shorter days with fewer hours of sunshine - any golden autumn has yet to materialize though.

Should you have no idea or little on your mind, maybe go this route: in the Chinese lunisolar calendar these days fall into the season of the mid-autumn festival 中秋節. You know, in the northern hemisphere, autumn means harvest, and there's a rich tradition and mythology that goes with it. And mooncakes, calorie-rich, traditional and ceremonial snacks like this:

In this household we do observe the festivities, but take store-bought moon cakes because busy times. The nod to goddess Chang'e was last Tuesday, but the cakes will last a few days. However, I love the colors of autumn, when the leaves turn red or yellowish and the chestnuts fall down… Typical tradition here for kids to collect chestnuts and or acorns for decorations. Often in kindergarten, the kids will craft some decorations out of it.

Good morning/evening/afternoon everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. Today, early in the morning, one of my bathroom mirrors crashed down from the wall and broke into pieces. Turned out that the hooks for the attachment at the wall were only glued, and it seems that the glue lost its stability. I inherited the mirror from the previous renter of the apartment. However, according to popular superstition, breaking a mirror means 7 years of bad luck... So let's see how the next years turn out ;)

Time to drink a hot chocolate or a puch. Today is National Punch Day. I didn't know that Punch originates in India.

the drink received this name because it was made with five ingredients: spirits—originally a fermented drink called arrack, lemons or limes, sugar, water, and tea or spices source
In Germany, you either have punch in summer with a couple of friends or you can get it on the Christmas markets in late November, but the punch you can buy there are too sweet for me.

Good morning/evening/afternoon everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. It's #caturday and #goaturday again!
During the summer, several graffiti artists or #streetart artists were called to create some façade murals on several locations in the city. I have not yet seen all, but the ones I have seen are really cool. Today is a small event to celebrate the achieved work that I will attend.
I really like this idea to hide ugly façades under cool graffiti/artwork, makes the city more enjoyable.

Do you have similar things in your city/village/town, or just the illegal graffiti spraying? Any other cool #streetart you encountered (legal or illegal) e.g. Banksy?

Good morning/evening/afternoon everyone and welcome to today's #checkin Can't believe it's Friday already!
On this day in, 1683, Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek is the first to report the existence of bacteria. Later he developed a revolutionary microscope. Unfortunately, he kept this technique for creating the lenses secret, so it only was that in the 19th century a similar resolution could be achieved. I, personally, think this is one of many great inventions that have advanced humanity! As a kid I had a computer game about Leonardo da Vinci, I really was fascinated by his ideas (although not all could work)

What do you think is the most influential thing that helped advance humanity? Not limited to technical inventions, could be art or poetry as well.

Well it’s my last day for hosting and @Christoph S is up next. Age is on my mind right now…sorry about that. You can always change the topic but first hear me out.

Sometimes my brain just jumps back in time. The other day we were putting the kayaks away and I needed to turn on the truck to run an air pump. I asked where the keys were and after I got them I could not identify which key started the truck. I looked at the bundle and the key slot and for some reason I was expecting a key like this…

I said I didn’t see the key. Fred very matter-of-factly said, press the silver button. In my defense I do not put a key in the ignition when I drive my car and we decided to go kayaking after I had walked to and from an exercise class. OTOH I haven’t had a key that looks like just a key for over a decade.

What type of activities make your memory skip?

Welcome to #CheckIn for Tuesday, September 14

Shifting media focus a bit to look at Superhero collectives. I grew up with Batman and Superman. Now there’s a lot more superhero themed media - the Avengers, Justice League, Titans, Doom Patrol, The Boys – to name a few. Are you a fan? Some of it I’ve enjoyed…I’m looking forward to the newest Thor. Some leave me flat (Titans) and some I want to like more than I do because of the actors (The Boys…Karl Urban!)

My favourite by far is Legends of Tomorrow. I started watching because Arthur Davrill but it’s just gotten better as time passes and I loved that last season even though the Legends were split up for some of it. I would be happy to have a leader like Sara Lance. And the Season 6 Finale hit all the right notes for me. Do you consume superhero media? Anime, comics, video? Do you include Dr. Who in that grouping?

I’ve been watching shows I enjoyed before the turnoff the century and the things I enjoy most are the atmosphere…things seemed brighter and a lot of Canadian-made stuff stands up well. (A lot of it was poorly produced at the time though).

Reddit is a wonderland of dysfunctional relationships and cute pets egged on by commenters but can be a real learning experience. Whether the stories are true or just so stories, it’s interesting what engages people. At work we played music in the lab almost constantly. It wasn't until we retired that I found out how much music disrupts his focus AND he found it offensive that people wore headphones so he didn't have to hear their music?!? I found that unexpected.

l go to outside exercise classes and, as summer comes to an end, I had thought of attending the indoor classes. But COVID is circling much nearer contacts and too many people are unvaccinated so Zoom it is.

But that got me thinking about the flu. Flu season is almost upon us and it seems there will be difficulties tailoring this year’s booster because we skipped a flu season. Since it’s a respiratory disease, it’s no surprise that masks, handwashing, and physical distancing work to reduce infection rates. But even without all those efforts, I haven’t had the flu, or even a bad cold for well over 5 years before I retired. Nor has anyone I’ve known. One Christmas we seem to have gotten the norovirus but, surprise, that’s not the flu.

Welcome to #CheckIn for Wednesday, September 8th

It’s International Literacy Day, and the third and last day of Rosh Hashanah (Hebrew: רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה‎), literally meaning "head [of] the year", is the Jewish New Year. L'shanah tovah tikatev v'taihatem to all observing.

It’s my last day as moderator this round. Cass M is scheduled to take it from here.

Anyone who knows me at all knows I’m willfully and habitually a reader. Books are my drug of choice. I don’t drink, smoke, or do drugs, but I do read, and a lot. I check out an average of two books a month from the library, have an open account at my local independent bookstore, (also have an Amazon wish list that directs friends and family to shop there,) belong to a book club that meets once a month, (virtually now, for over a year-and-a-half,) and piles of books yet to be read, stacked by genre. Then there’s the graphic novels, print and online, just like all the news sources I follow.

You’d think someone who reads as much and as widely as I do would be a better writer, but no. I struggle over every line, because the Coleridgian concept that prose is words in their best order, burns like a flaming beacon in the back of my head (right next to that whirling acid-induced mandala that never seems to go away,) causing me to torture myself over things that are best said plainly, as if to “talk right down to earth in a language that everybody here can easily understand.”

I started writing a story about a Mexican girl from a crypto-Jewish family fleeing the revolution and finally coming to rest in pre-WWI Los Angeles. I’ve finished other stories while trying to make headway on this one, but I’m stuck in Juarez, like that Dylan song. It’s like the creative vein I was mining ran out there, Pancho Villa and Sam Dreben notwithstanding. I don’t know how writers like Neil Gaiman or Stephen King do it. It’s like magic to me, how they seem to conjure stories out of nowhere.

So I guess the question here is, do you enjoy reading, and if so what? Any favorite authors you return to time and again? Of course any other topic is fine per usual.

It’s National Beer Lovers Day!
It’s also Brazil Independence Day, and the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah.
L’Shana Tovah. Happy, healthy and sweet new year to all observing.

Do you love beer? I used to, but by a stroke of luck I quit drinking some time before the arrival of Zima, which sounded terrible.
My faves beers were Guinness, Sapporo Black, and Bohemia, but I have to admit I’d drink any beer on offer. I was anything but a beer connoisseur, believe me.
My friends and I frequented a tavern that used to be called the Princess of Wales for a concoction called a Black and Tan, which was a Guinness floated on top of a Harp Lager. It was like watching a magic trick when they poured them. We’d have a lot of them. After I quit drinking, I became their designated driver. Turned out to be incredibly stupid fun, as drunks are easy to prank and manipulate.

Beer is one of the oldest drinks humans have produced. Beer is almost as old as human civilization. Through carbon dating, the earliest recipe can be traced back to Mesopotamia in 5000 B.C. The Code of Hammurabi, the ancient Babylonian set of laws, decreed a daily beer ration to citizens. The drink was distributed according to social standing: laborers received two liters a day, while priests and administrators got five. It’s a wonder that anything got done.

In ancient Egypt, beer was so essential it was treated principally as a type of food - it was consumed daily and in great quantities at religious festivals and celebrations. Beer was an essential for laborers, like those who built the pyramids of Giza, who were provided with a daily ration of 1⅓ gallons (over 10 pints). Yet it still had divine status, with several gods and goddesses associated with beer. Hathor, the goddess of love, dance and beauty, was also appropriately known as ‘The Lady of Drunkenness’.
10 pints! Thats like a blackout weekend for me.

Since that time, nearly every culture around the world has invented its own local brew. Beer forms part of the culture of many nations, and is associated with social traditions such as beer festivals and soccer hooliganism.

Labor Day - USA

I have an odd relationship with this holiday.
More than 80 countries celebrate International Workers' Day on May 1, the ancient European holiday of May Day. May Day was chosen by the Second International of socialist and communist parties to commemorate the Haymarket affair which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886.

The September date was chosen for Labor Day to disassociate itself from May Day and any hint of labor radicalism. The original date coincided with the General Assembly of the Knights of Labor, an organization that only supported skilled workers and excluded Black Americans and other minorities.

As a worker, I was always struck by the irony of Labor Day, its origins, and how it’s celebrated, as it’s rife with patriotic symbols, nationalism, and militarism, everything early unions were against. Of course, as a schoolboy, Labor Day meant the dreaded end of summer, and the inevitable return to school, where I would be stuck in a class, surrounded by other kids, subjected to the type of rote learning I abhorred.

Welcome to #CheckIn for Sunday, September 5th

Here in the US and Canada, It’s National Cheese Pizza Day!
It’s also Father’s Day in Australia and New Zealand, but more importantly, it’s National Cheese Pizza Day! And I simply LOVE cheese pizza! Especially thin crust with light sauce and the cheese baked to crusty perfection. I’d even love it for Father’s Day!

When I was a child, my grandfather would take me down to a tiny pizza joint Little Italy called Filippi’s Pizza Grotto. It was a simply a long corridor with a market in front, packed to the rafters with imported goods, and dried meats, fish and squid hanging from the ceiling. In the back was a counter and some narrow booths jammed in next to the kitchen, where you could feel the heat of the pizza oven. Of course it’s now a large restaurant, expanding to three times its original size, (maybe four,) with fourteen locations from Tijuana to Norco, but that market, counter, booths and and oven are still there. And even though there are four large rooms filled with chianti bottles dangling above the tables and chairs, it's in those little booths that I like to sit.

Well, I guess I’m having pizza for dinner tonight, because Pizza Quattro Formaggi sounds really good to me right now. Fontina, Mozzarella, Gorgonzola, and Parmegiano-Reggiano on rossa, or maybe even Pecorino-Romano, Provolone, goat cheese, and Havarti. No telling what I’ll decide on. Have to check if I remembered to get more flour in.

Welcome to #CheckIn for Saturday, September 4th

Around the second or third month of the pandemic, when I finally realized that I wasn’t going to find work after being laid off, I decided I would write a haiku every day. It started out well, and went on for a good while, but I gave up after the garden began to take over my life. Now, I’m not really good at writing or poetry, so I had to look up, read about, and read a bunch of haiku before I started, and I’m still not sure that I get it, but I gave it my best. Here’s a couple of examples:

It’s quiet at home
Streets are empty of people
There’s only parked cars

So sorry barber.
Let’s just see how long it gets.
That's it for haircuts!

I talk to Jimmie,
Facetime on the telephone
He says to retire.
