Hello! Having a good weekend? I'm enjoying my weekend with friends whose forefathers (and foremothers) were from Sweden. They spoiled me with a traditional Swedish dish that in Canada has evolved into a truly delicious meal. The Swedish call it Rotmos and it's also known as Root Mousse in English. Here in Canada, short ribs were added to the recipe (imagine adding pulled pork into the root mixture!)

Hello, how are you? Welcome to another #checkin day. What a week it's been. So much happening in this world of ours and there are now 8 billion of us! Thank heavens there are still many places to get away, explore and to get restored. What comes to mind when you think of taking a hike in the outdoors? What are your favourite places and activities? Where are places you would like to go?

The above is a glimpse of the trail I was on about a month ago... It was a lightly rainy day but this accessible (doable with ordinary walking shoes) public trail on Vancouver Island had spectacular views. I was mesmerized by the pods of whales that swam by! It felt like wilderness but round trip the walk only took a couple of hours, including time for a picnic.🤣

Good evening/afternoon/morning everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. Can't believe it's my last day again for this week. Finally a bit of rain outside. However, this morning (in my timezone), finally the Artemis I rocket launched successfully and the spacecraft Orion is now on route to circle around the moon! What an impressive piece of technology.
Meanwhile, in Germany the era of the last telephone booth/boxes is coming to an end again. Most of the old famous yellow ones had been dismantled before, and the newer ones are also about to be disabled in the next weeks.
When I was a kid, we had one of those famous yellow boxes in the village center as well... Loong gone. I remember that during holidays in Austria or Italy as a kid we always used these telephone boxes there with phone cards to call friends or grandparents.

Good morning/evening/afternoon everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. I'm a bit later than usual today. Took a nap after coming home from work. It's neither freezing nor warm outside. Hate this weather.
Well, time to relax and watch some movies! I'm currently watching Season one of NCIS Hawaii. I'm a huge fan of the NCIS series and nearly all of their spinoffs (except for the ones in LA) and so far, I like it. A fresh, young team led by a woman.

Good evening/afternoon/morning everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. GIF! It was another sunny and warm day so far. Well, in some cities in Germany today at 11:11 the so-called 5th season started. Carnival! I grew up next to a city that is known to be a carnival stronghold in the region, but I was never really into it. Mostly because here in the countryside, it includes drinking a lot of alcohol. And if you're sober, it feels weird. But for small kids this is of course fun as well. But it's also celebrated differently and called differently in parts of Germany!

Good morning from Missouri!

I’ve been very absent from Diaspora and the #CheckIn space, but today I’ll be guest host. Hope everyone is doing well and I wish nothing but good for ya’ll.

I’ve been thinking about social media and more specifically the internet lately. So much has changed in my lifetime around how we use the internet and how we communicate. Email used to be king and Yahoo Groups was his queen. I can remember logging into Juno email on their desktop program that allowed the sending and receiving of messages without a prolonged internet connection. It would simply connect via modem just long enough to send and receive. And that was a free service and was installed via a CD. Then there was mIRC and ICQ for instant messaging. Different, different times.

What about you? What do you recall being your first communication tools of choice over the internet?

Travel! I’ve always wanted to take a decent length train trip. I’ve been watching train travel videos and live close enough that getting to a trip through the Rockies wouldn’t include a lot of extra travel expense. I think it’s an appealing form of luxury travel that would be less likely to cause motion sickness.

Hello fellow humans.

My earliest memory of swimming lessons is from when I was 5ish and took them at the YMCA. Lessons (along with first aid for drowning) were also an annual event at school until grade 9. In spite of at least 6 years of lessons, I swim like a rock. I took lessons again in my late 20s and still swim like a rock so I wear a life jacket when on the water. I’m very comfortable snorkeling and scuba diving though.

How is your swimming ability? Does it help with your comfort levels around water?

When is the right time for children to learn to swim?

While it may be possible to teach young infants basic motor skills in water, infants cannot, and should not, be expected to know how to swim or to be able to react appropriately in emergencies.

I really like the view into our home from our front door. While we don’t enter through the front door very often but the garage entry leads us to the front entry (unless we have to run to the bathroom😁)

I think I’ve been sucked into a meme….

I’ve seen and found myself thinking “This is the way” I like it way-y-y better than the “you’re not wrong” phrase. I didn’t realize where it was from until I started watching The Mandalorian. TBH the premise of The Mandalorian didn’t really appeal to me, even though The Child is super cute. I am really enjoying the series though.

I could talk about the weather. As we had a lovely Halloween where costumes weren't hidden under big coats, today we’re having our first snow and are under a snow warning…but that’s kind of depressing😥 Instead the topic is multi-unit living spaces. I haven’t lived in apartments for a long time but when I did it was important to have a balcony/deck. I don’t know why because I don’t spend a lot of time sitting on our deck or hanging out in the backyard, I mostly go for walks. Maybe it’s because of the larger door vs. a window.

If you’re in an apartment, do you prefer to have a balcony or access to a park? If you’re not in an apartment, do you use your yard a lot?

Welcome to #checkin for Tuesday, November 1st, 2022!

Good afternoon/evening/morning everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. As I live in a Catholic region, I have a public holiday today, and it's also the start of the new month. For the Catholics, it's All Saints' Day and people usually go to the cemetery and "visit" their dead relatives. And for the Mexicans, it's tomorrow also Dia de Los Muertos. Even though I am Catholic, I am not really observing these traditions or the concepts. I try to remember lost relatives and lost pets how they were during their life. I don't need to have a grave. The traditions here in Germany are also changing, and more and more people chose to be cremated instead of buried.
I like the more positive approach of the Mexican Dia de Los Muertos, celebrating instead of focusing so much on the death itself.

What's your way to remember lost pets or relatives? Are you more celebrating life or mourning the death?

Welcome to #checkin for Monday, October, 31st, 2022!

Good evening/afternoon and welcome to today's #checkin. As @Rodrigo Mesa is currently busy with private stuff, I will take over today and tomorrow as a #checkin moderator. Today is Reformation day and some parts of Germany have a public holiday, mostly those with more Protestantism/Lutheran people and tomorrow is the catholic All Saints' Day when the more catholic federal states have a public holiday. And then there are the poor folks who neither have any of that day... and it's Halloween or Samhain! as well!

So already done your Halloween decoration or carved a pumpkin? Do you even "celebrate" it? Here in Germany it's not that much a thing. For kids mainly and some neighbors in the street have put up some Halloween decoration but that's it. Maybe also some kin of theme parties.

For me, Zoe, Zach's sister, hasn't been around for a number of weeks so last night, when she came for a weekend night sleepover it was almost a reunion. It's an understatement to say the two sibs were overjoyed. Well, yes, I indulged in many activities I knew they both enjoy. We were all smiling.
