We were visiting with friends and they had someone break into their vehicle and take their registration and garage door opener which they used to break into their house!?! A bad situation was made worse because they have a monitored security system but it took 40 minutes for the company to let them know their alarm had been triggered. I thought the security companies were supposed to call within 5 minutes of an alarm!

Good evening/afternoon/morning everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. It's another warm and windy day, with temps around 25C. The wind is really nice so you can open the windows and have a fresh breeze coming through.
Today is Dance Like a Chicken day, named after the famous Chicken Dance. In Germany, it's called Ententanz (duck dance), which is more fitting as the original author of the song and dance was a Swiss Guy and also owned ducks. However, in a German interview he says he was inspired by people on ski doing these kinds of moves and that led to the dance.

So, dancing is our topic today: Did you attend dancing school/lessons? Tango? Salsa? Foxtrot? Waltz? Do you dance/did you dance?

Good afternoon/evening/morning everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. Today is a sunny and warm day again, and it's Mother's Day. As the German Satire magazine Der Postillon writes:

A few good friends, a handcart and liters of alcohol: for more and more mothers, these are the ingredients for the perfect Mother's Day. Once again this year, the merry groups of women will parade through towns and villages, blasting Helene Fischer from the boombox and supplied with crates of sparkling wine, strawberry limes and Aperol Sprizz.

Feel relieved, in contrast to Father's Day, there are no marauding hoards of women getting drunk in public today...

Good evening/afternoon/morning everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. It's Friday and a so called Brückentag (bridge day) because it bridges the days between yesterday's holiday and the weekend. Many people take this opportunity to take a holiday as well. However, only some people took a day off in our company. My neighbors are enjoying the evening with a barbecue, I already smelled the charcoal...

Tomorrow is the annual colorful musical event, the Eurovision Song Contest. Let's see if Germany takes home the last place again or one of the lower places... This year there are many talented musicians. My personal favorite is the Windows 95 man from Finland and he was nominated because he won the local viewer voting! The jury apparently aren't nerdy enough...

Sunday Scaries, you have heard of this? It's when the anxiety of the work-week ahead crushes your ability to enjoy about a quarter of your weekend. I must say, for the past two and a half years, I have the Sunday Scaries no more. I finally found the job I should have had all along (if only it had existed).

Also, a word to the wise: when I am fully retired, I hope to have enough empathy to refrain from responding to a post like this with "I don't work at all no more, nyahh nyahh. What day of the week is it, even?" Which is how that entire class of responses all sound 😀

It’s International Workers Day so let's talk work. I’ve always considered work as what I did to fund things I enjoy. I really don't get this thing about being passionate about your job, there are a lot of necessary jobs, cleaning bathrooms for example, that very few can feel passionate about. The only thing would be whether the company went against my ethics which are centered on treating all people like people and having consistent work rules across countries for multinationals.

Well hello there,

I was thinking about relationships the other day – surely an offshoot of reading REDDIT. People often say relationships take work, especially if you share a space. That said, there are a lot of compatibilities that can make the “work” less or easier.

When I was young, shared housing was common, whether it was renting an apartment or house. I rented an apartment with a loose friend and got paired with someone I didn't know when I shared at Tech school; we chose to share a 2 bedroom for second year. Since then I’ve been married so I’ve pretty well always shared accommodations with someone. That brings a whole lot of role expectations that I feel weighed down by – for instance, why were women judged if a home wasn’t clean/tidy when men have thumbs?

Anywhoo – while people look at money compatibility and gender role compatibility, one thing I think people overlook is health attitudes, probably because most people at least seem to be healthy in social situations. While you can have different outlooks there are somethings that should mesh – illness avoidance strategies, expectations when ill like how much you like to be left alone.

Hey, hey, it's Monday! This is Cass

I was at the library the other day and they were holding a first aid for babysitters course. So when I read this article, I was pretty surprised to hear babysitting isn't common in some areas. I started babysitting when I was around 12 with the next-door neighbours and expanded from there. My experience included feeding them, playing or monitoring them and helping them get ready for bed. Then your job was to stay awake, ready to act in case of an emergency, until the parents came home. Homework and TV usually filled that gap.

Many home services could help people in a community, whether they’ve outlived their friend circle or are new to town. We’ve found someone who will come and let Bennie out pr water our plants and do home checks when we go away.
