Why howdy there #Checkin People! It’s @Rod Mesa again. Here's hoping for a successful post this time!

It's the First Day of Spring, and the 10th Day of Ramadan. And while today may be Taco Tuesday, because of the Vernal Equinox and @That Harp Guy, we’re going to talk about carrots, and specifically Carrot Soup.

I must be part rabbit because I love carrots. Most of all, I love carrot soup. Whether roasted, panfried, or cooked in broth, a carrot base is so tasty and versatile.
How do I love carrot soup? Let me count the ways.

With:
Miso and sesame
Tahini and crisped chickpeas
Cumin, coriander, coconut milk and cinnamon
Ginger, vinegar or lemon
Chermoula or tabouli
Sweet potato and apple
And curried with red lentils and peas!

I could go on and on! (did I mention I love carrots?)

I use a 40yo Hamilton Beach Blender to get a creamy consistency, but one can simmer thinly sliced or grated carrots long enough to make them smooth.

Did you know that on this day, March 18, 1965, cosmonaut Alexey Leonov made the first spacewalk? March 18th is also known as Forgive Mom & Dad Day, Awkward Moments Day, Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day, Sloppy Joe Day, Goddess of Fertility Day, Act Happy Day, and Dribble to Work day, which I hope has to do with basketball and not drool or incontinence.

Why howdy there #Checkin People! It’s Roddio again. Guess what?
That's right, it's St. Patrick's Day!
And a Sunday to boot! Not a good night for carousing or pub crawls if you ask my opinion. though there's bound to me more than a few suffering from Bottle Flu on Monday morning.

it's around 10 O'clock on Saturday night as I type this, and there are probably people staggering around already well on their way to becoming tired and emotional. I suspect they'll be horrified when Uber & Lift fares skyrocket later. Sensible people took the bus or trolley. Partying Saturday night instead of Sunday makes sense. They can nurse their hangovers all day Sunday.
I used to be the designated driver for my friends. I couldn't be bothered now.

Ya know, for years when people asked about my background, I'd tell them that I was everything but Irish. Then I had my DNA done, and to my surprise I found that I could no longer honestly say that. So now I tell them that I'm everything but Russian, because (bleep) that.

Why howdy there #Checkin People! It’s Roddio again
It's National Panda Day, National Quilting Day, Driving Instructor Day, No Selfies Day, Lips Appreciation Day, Corndog Day, Artichoke Day, and the 6th day off Ramadan.

Today we’re going to talk about musicians.
I just watched Rick Beato interviewing George Benson. It was interesting to hear Mr Benson talk about musicians he admired and worked with over his 50 + year career, especially when expressing his awe in seeing his heroes perform. People like Joe Pass, Grant Green, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, Wes Montgomery and John Coltrane. Even his open admiration of and drawing inspiration from Peter Frampton’s guitar playing.
Because of an invite from a friend, I was fortunate enough to see George Benson play with a trio in a small Jazz club in La Jolla CA. It was an all-instrumental set, which I found surprising because up to that point, I knew him primarily as a vocalist from popular radio play. I was blown away by his incredible mastery of the guitar and the tremendous performance of his band. I bought his album right afterwards.

Why howdy there #Checkin People! It’s me, Roddo. I’m back! Today we’re going to talk about allergies.

Allergies don’t usually bother me, but thanks to living in Southern California, nearly every Spring and Fall my system becomes overwhelmed by allergies, and just like this week, I wind up at the medical ceenter.

I had asthma when I was a kid but outgrew it. Puberty, I guess. I was able to play sports in high school and college, and had a very active life as an adult: baseball, roundball, futbol, you name it, I was up for it. Ran through a few bike frames before I reached 40. I was "as hale and hearty as a horse" is how my doctor put it.

That is until I turned 60. My doctor retired and my childhood asthma returned with a vengeance, and allergy season can be particularly rough. I’m on meds right now because of them.

Stupid Pet Tricks

I refer to indiosyncratic capabilities that people have with little, if any, useful application as "stupid pet tricks" (SPTs).

My SPT is the ability to identify people merely by listening to their voice. So, for example:

• There's a scene in The Majestic in which unseen "Hollywood executives" are engaged in an inane conversation in which they are making bad decisions. The voices are all done by famous writer-directors who may very well have written the dialogue themselves: Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner, Sidney Pollack, Garry Marshall, and Paul Mazursky. I was able to identify all but Mazursky, whom I had never heard before. I found it especially entertaining because I realized in real-time, the directors were giving Hollywood executives their comeuppance.

• For years, Jimmy Dean did the voice-overs on his TV sausage ads. For years after he died, they continued the recorded voice, while changing the graphics, or adding dialogue from actors. Then, they started auditioning voices to replace Dean. They were all wide-off the mark IMAO, including the guy they settled on.

• When I've actually heard a performer before, I can identify the singer on The Masked Singer. So, for example, I identified Dick Van Dyke. I was uncertain at first, because Dick & Jerry Van Dyke sounded very much alike, especially as they got older, but then I remembered that Jerry was dead. Most, of the time, however, I have no idea who the performers are, even if they showed up in their birthday suits.

Cinematic Guilty Pleasures

Many of us have rules for books, movies and TV that we want to watch, and that we admit to. And then, we have the guilty pleasures -- those that don't fit our rules that we sometimes watch, but seldom own up to.

Today's Topic Is the Weather

I have an interesting perspective on the weather, as I've lived or worked all across the US, each region for a prolonged period or frequent visits. With the exception of perhaps CA and FL, everybody thinks their city/state/region has the most variable weather. In my experience, however, Colorado takes the cake. On the whole, CO's weather is mild, but when it comes to variability, there's no comparison.

In the winter, people will see the Broncos play on TV, and there's a snowstorm with snow drifts measured in feet, not inches. Friends or family will call to commiserate about the weather, and they will be incredulous that the next day it's in the high 50's and there is not a snowflake to be found. Also, signs on mountain roads warn you to climb to safety in case of flash flood. Few heed the warning when it's 70 and the sun is brighter than you've ever seen, on either coast, the midwest, or the south. Then, boom, flash flood.

Today’s topic is:

What is are the most unusual experiences you've had with a child?

My answer:

When Katie was 3, she asked me if I wanted to attend the tea party she was having with her doll and teddy bear. Of course, I agreed, but I really didn't understand the level of commitment that a child can bring to pretend/play. Her tea set was entirely made of aluminum, and the tea, water and scones were "ethereal". She completely blew me away by the care she took in pouring the tea into the cups, distributing the "scones" and in carefully sipping the tea, as well as asking me if I was pleased. And, pleased I was.

This probably sounds very mundane, because it is impossible for my mere words to convey the level of commiment that she made in play.

Beth was so impressed too, that the following week she and Katie made actual tea and crumpets and we all partook, with Katie, again, as the hostess. (Katie had seen tea and crumpets on a Brit cartoon.)

Good evening/afternoon/morning everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. It's foggy weather today, with around 5 to 7C here. My gf is on her way home by train and while all the trains were punctual so far, now there's a bomb defusal of an old WWII bomb somewhere along the way, and they have to take an alternative route.... And the next train drivers strike is already announced as well for this week. So riding the train in Germany is more like Roulette...

Time to grab a snack! Today is national snack day! What is your favorite snack? Cookies? Or Healthy stuff? During Christmas, my favorite snack are gingerbread cookies, but otherwise I like oatmeal cookies as well. What are typical party snacks you have in your region?
