' #Climatechange includes both #global #warming driven by #human-induced #emissions of #greenhouse #gases and the resulting large-scale #shifts in #weather #patterns.'
According to the new #IntergovernmentalPanelOnClimateChange #IPCC #climatereport, the #carbon #budget that gives us the best odds of staying below 1,5°C runs out in less than 5 and a half years at our current #emissions rate. The new report contains no real surprises. It confirms what we already know from thousands of previous studies and reports - that we are in an #emergency. It’s a solid (but cautious) #summary of the current best available science. It doesn't tell us what to do. It is up to us to be brave and take decisions based on the #scientific #evidence provided in these reports. We can still avoid the worst #consequences, but not if we continue like today, and not without treating the #crisis like a crisis.

A climate report that crossed Boris Johnson's desk said to, "keep fossil fuels in the ground"
#Politics #BorisJohnson #ClimateReport #FossilFuels #ClimateCrisis #Avaaz #Petition

"Dear friends,

Something incredible just happened...

What we’ve been saying for years -- asking governments to keep fossil fuels in the ground, just got echoed by the world’s most influential energy agency! At the request of the UK government. Right before key meetings with world leaders, that the UK is hosting!

But Boris Johnson’s government is pursuing new oil and gas projects in the North Sea, and even considering a new coal mine!

If he’s serious about becoming a climate leader, he needs to act now, cancel these projects, and rally other leaders in the G7 and beyond to follow the report’s urgent findings. No new fossil fuels, period! That’s the only way to stave off climate catastrophe.

This is BoJo’s big test. Let’s raise a massive call and hold his feet to the fire -- once we reach a million voices, Avaaz will challenge him to follow through with a hard-hitting full page ad right as he hosts the G7 heads of state meeting.

The UK is also hosting the crucial COP26 climate summit this November, and Boris Johnson is trying hard to show up as a global climate leader. He’s set a good target to cut the UK’s emissions — but his government’s immediate actions and investments aren’t yet enough to unleash the urgent transition to 100% clean energy and keep global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Rather than pumping money towards new oil & gas in the North Sea or a coal mine, Johnson needs to put UK taxpayer money where his mouth is! And shift and ramp up investments in clean energy, transport, and food systems to cut emissions rapidly, create jobs, and help those most vulnerable.

A growing chorus of experts are calling on him to do so -- but as Boris Johnson hosts key climate meetings at the global stage, this call needs to become the unmistakable expectation from people across the UK and everywhere!

Click to join the call now -- and let’s make sure Johnson acts boldly to end all new fossil fuels… asap.

As devastating climate impacts hit communities and ecosystems across the world, a turning point is in the air. The International Energy Agency, after years of foot-dragging, has taken a giant step forward and called on world leaders to deliver immediate and bold action. This only happened after tireless campaigning from many corners of the climate movement. Including Avaazers everywhere! A better, greener, safer future is within our reach -- it’s time to keep showing up, to fight for it and win it.

With hope and determination,

Mike, Patricia, Alice, Risalat, Pascal, Marta and the rest of the Avaaz team"

Put pressure on Boris to rally other leaders in the G7
