Exxon Mobil Corp. CEO Darren Woods told editors from Fortune that the world has “waited too long” to begin investing in a broader suite of technologies to slow planetary heating.

Global #warming has exceeded 1.5C across an entire year for the first time.

source: https://plantbasednews.org/news/environment/worlds-first-year-long-breach-limit/

This year-long breach does not mean that the world has broken the #Paris #Climate #Agreement #limit, but it does bring it closer to doing so in the longer term. The 1.5C limit is a legally binding 2015 treaty with 195 signatories to set out a path for dealing with climate change.

'A Pause Isn't Enough': Biden to Reportedly Halt LNG Buildout
OLIVIA ROSANE
Jan 24, 2024

..."#climate advocates and Louisiana residents have been mobilizing against the buildout of LNG infrastructure, with a sit-in planned at the DOE headquarters in Washington, D.C. for February. If approved, activists have noted, CP2 would emit 20 times more #greenhouse gas #emissions than the controversial Willow oil drilling project, and the more than 20 LNG export facilities planned for the U.S. Gulf Coast would release more climate #pollution each year than the European Union.

"Biden's action shows two things," Oil Change International's U.S. Program Manager Allie Rosenbluth said in a statement about the reported delay. "One, the marches, petitions, and grassroots organizing from frontline communities and their allies are working. And two, Biden is afraid that his climate hypocrisy will cost him the election if he doesn't make real progress on fossil fuels."
...
"If it's true, and I think it is, this is the biggest thing a U.S. president has ever done to stand up to the fossil fuel industry," McKibben said.

Jamie Henn, the director of Fossil Free Media, told Common Dreams that "if this reporting is correct, it's a major win in the fight against fossil fuels."

"This decision would stop nearly 20 new LNG facilities, representing 675 coal-fired power plants of emissions, dead in their tracks," Henn said.

Jean Su, director of the the Center for Biological Diversity's Energy Justice program said, "We would welcome the Biden administration pausing the monstrous, climate-killing CP2 project, but a pause isn't enough."

"Growing national pressure from youth and frontline communities to end fossil fuel expansion got us here. Now the administration needs to go the full nine yards and reject CP2 and all new oil and gas projects. To preserve a livable planet, we need a public interest test that denies any new project that would drive us further into climate catastrophe and violate U.S. commitments to transition away from fossil fuels."...

How Far to the 1.5°C #Limit?

source: https://tamino.wordpress.com/2024/01/08/how-far-to-the-1-5c-limit/

And what, you deserve to know, is my answer to the original question, “How far to the 1.5°C limit?” Using the current smoothed values calculated with my new definition of “pre-industrial,” I’ll say we are now 1.32°C above pre-industrial, so another 0.18°C will bring us to the limit. At the rate we’re going, I expect that to happen in the early 2030s.

The #Amazon #Jungle is one of the few tipping points where #humanity can still actively intervene to weaken #climate #change. Unfortunately, the Amazon is still being destroyed and not adequately protected. In view of the fact that nothing less than the survival of humanity and our civilization is at stake, it is beyond comprehension why no significant efforts are being made by the global community to protect it.

#StephenFry on How to use #AI as a force for good

source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZfS8uk70Zc

How can the coming flood of technological progress, which will not stop at current developments such as big data-based and algorithmically generated statistical models with their astonishing capabilities and failures - i.e. current #AI systems - but lead to a further acceleration of innovation with increasing technological performance in computing? Today, we are thinking about an epistemic #crisis of world #knowledge in times of #deepfakes, #surveillance and bioweapons through AI, while brain-computer interfaces and quantum computers are already appearing on the horizon today. At the same time, #climate #change is probably the most outstanding of all crises, which has already been showing its first effects for several years and is setting new records with constantly rising #emissions. In short, how can we ensure that the coming real-life version of what is commonly referred to as "Singularity" turns out for the good of #humanity?

The Green New Deal Is the Opiate of the Masses

Source: https://www.thenation.com/article/economy/degrowth-communism-green-new-deal/

#Capitalism is always trying to raise workforce #productivity in order to cut costs. Rises in workforce productivity allow the same amount of #production to occur with fewer workers. When this happens, the economy’s size remains constant while unemployment rates rise. But capitalism also makes it impossible for the unemployed to live, and politicians hate high unemployment rates. For this reason, there’s a huge amount of pressure for the economy to keep expanding indefinitely so as to maintain the rate of employment. This is why a rise in productivity results in the expansion of the #economy. This is the Productivity Trap.

#Pope Francis criticizes #capitalism

source: https://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_exhortations/documents/20231004-laudate-deum.html

As usual, it would seem that everything is the fault of the poor. Yet the reality is that a low, richer percentage of the planet contaminates more than the poorest 50% of the total world population, and that per capita emissions of the richer countries are much greater than those of the poorer ones.

...

Deep down, it consists in thinking “as if reality, goodness and truth automatically flow from technological and economic power as such”. As a logical consequence, it then becomes easy “to accept the idea of infinite or unlimited growth, which proves so attractive to economists, financiers and experts in #technology”.

...

One need but think of the momentary excitement raised by the money received in exchange for the deposit of nuclear waste in a certain place. The house that one could have bought with that money has turned into a grave due to the diseases that were then unleashed.

...

Once and for all, let us put an end to the irresponsible derision that would present this issue as something purely ecological, “green”, romantic, frequently subject to ridicule by economic interests. Let us finally admit that it is a human and social #problem on any number of levels. For this reason, it calls for involvement on the part of all.
