We can't save the world with electric cars

Going electric does not solve our problems, it only deepens them. As engineers, we must say the opinion of the professionals in the industry is contrary to the mainstream, and for good reason, Zsolt Horváth and Tamás Ignácz write.

We’ve known for a long time that our GDP addiction and capitalist economic model are incompatible with life on Earth.

Scientists kept saying that for decades, yet very little happened. A few years ago, the electrification of passenger vehicles had begun its journey, hoping it could reduce CO2 emissions to save the planet.

Not only does it not help — it worsens the situation, and yet we keep heading towards a disaster.

By dramatically reducing the number of #ship tracks, the #planet has warmed up faster, several new studies have found. That trend is magnified in the Atlantic, where maritime #traffic is particularly dense. In the shipping corridors, the increased light represents a 50% boost to the warming effect of human #carbon #emissions. It’s as if the #world suddenly lost the cooling effect from a fairly large volcanic eruption each year, says Michael Diamond, an atmospheric scientist at Florida State University.

The Place-Based Carbon Calculator estimates the #carbon #footprint per person for every neighbourhood in #England. It shows how carbon footprints vary greatly across the country, both in size and in main contributing causes.

It's intended to help communities and policy makers understand where their carbon footprints come from and what we need to do to reduce them. Those with worse scores need to do more, and faster, but there's no one-size fits all solution. Very useful work from CREDS.

My neighbourhood's pretty good, it seems.

I haven’t always believed carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology would play a big role in the energy transition. While I knew the technology was sound and has been used at commercial-scale for more than 20 years, I thought the capital costs, operations and maintenance expense, and heat rate and capacity-derating penalties would preclude extensive use of CCUS technology. However, my view has changed.
