Disused mine in Finland is being turned into a gravity battery to store renewable energy

The firm has developed an energy storage system that raises and lowers weights, offering what it says are “some of the best characteristics of lithium-ion batteries and pumped hydro storage”.

When there is excess power - from wind turbines on a windy day for example - weights would be winched up the Pyhäsalmi mine’s 530-metre auxiliary shaft. To generate energy, these weights can be released turning the winches into generators creating either a short burst of electricity or a slower trickle depending on what is needed.

The gravity energy system would be able to store 2MW of power and integrate into the local energy grid.

With the growing concern across the province that the #Alberta #Energy Regulator seems to operate without sufficient public transparency and has vast discretionary powers, Alberta Wilderness Association opted to host a panel discussion on the theme "Reconsidering the Alberta Energy Regulator." The agency seems to be held captive by industry interests, rather than functioning as it is meant to: making decisions based on the best interests of Indigenous communities, the environment, and the public at large. Recent incidents, like the Kearl spills — and AER's response to it among others — highlights this point. #tarsands #oilsands #oil

Iran is in negotiations with China to purchase a tram/bus system for Tehran worth $12-$13 billion.

It is another push by Reisi's government to cut the pollution in the city and help with the out of control congestion caused by over 12 million cars in the city, most of them over 30 years old.

Iran seem to be increasing it's sale of oil significantly and planning to reach 4M barrels per day in 2025.

There are also reports that Iran is planning to build a second nuclear power plant in Sirik city in Hormozgan province, by the Persian Gulf. The plan is to produce 5GW or energy that is significantly larger than the Bushehr plant that in theory can produce 1GW but hasn't been able to produce more than 30% of max capacity.

Sam #Altman Says #AI Using Too Much #Energy, Will Require #Breakthrough Energy Source

"There's no way to get there without a breakthrough," Altman told audiences, as quoted by Reuters. "It motivates us to go invest more in #fusion," adding that we need better ways to store energy from #solar #power.

Of course, there is no reason to save energy, especially as the only way to improve AI models with today's technology is to throw more and more hardware at them. Some invention in the future will save us until then we will continue to heat up the planet.

The Rise of Batteries in Six Charts and Not Too Many Numbers - RMI

#electricity #energy #batteries

Battery sales are growing exponentially up classic S-curves that characterize the growth of disruptive new technologies. For thirty years, sales have been doubling every two to three years, enjoying a 33 percent average growth rate. In the past decade, as electric cars have taken off, it has been closer to 40 percent.
