"Electric vehicles are better than gas-powered cars in winter -- here's why"

The electric vehicle can start heating the cabin immediately without making you wait for the internal combustion engine (ICE) to heat up. In fact it can start while it's still plugged in to the charger in the garage and not on batter power, and pre-warm your car for your trip.

And engineers continually improve heat transfer systems so it moves any extra heat wherever it's needed, whether it's heating in the winter or cooling in the summer.

Most of the complex parts in a car that require viscous fluids do not exist in an eletric vehicle, "no engine or transmission to worry about", so you don't have to wait for viscous fluids to warm up for the car to function efficiently.

Electric cars have smaller grille openings in the front for air intake, and flatter underbodies without driveshafts or tailpipes, giving them lower drag coefficients which helps in winter when the cold air is denser.

"Electric vehicles are less reliable than conventional cars" says Consumer Reports.

"Electric vehicle owners continue to report far more problems with their vehicles than owners of conventional cars or hybrids, according to Consumer Reports' newly released annual car reliability survey. The survey reveals that, on average, EVs from the past three model years had 79 percent more problems than conventional cars. Based on owner responses on more than 330,000 vehicles, the survey covers 20 potential problem areas, including engine, transmission, electric motors, leaks, and infotainment systems."

Must admit, I expected electric vehicles to be more reliable than conventional cars. Maybe eventually.

"How California could pave the way for an industry standard EV diagnostic system."

"If your gas-powered car was manufactured after 1991, it is most likely equipped with a mandatory On Board Diagnostic (OBD) system -- a computer that monitors the health of the engine and various other components, effectively functioning like a doctor for your car."

"For electric cars, a standardized OBD system has been notably absent."

"It seems like the authorities have taken this matter seriously. From 2026, California Air Resources Board's Advanced Clean Cars II program would require automakers to equip their EVs with a standard diagnostic system, similar to the OBD II in internal combustion engine cars."

"Honda has a new e-scooter called the Motocompacto, which has an aesthetic that I would describe as 'irresistibly, heartbreakingly dorky and adorable.'"

"The new Motocompacto features an updated, but still retro look, with an all-white body that looks vaguely 1950s pop sci-fi. The scooter folds down for portability, and has a total range of 12 miles, with a battery that charges to full in 3.5 hours with its onboard charger using a standard household outlet. It will retail for just $995."

"Honda's Motocompacto has a top speed of 15 mph, and it's aimed at first- and last-mile transportation needs."

Support Coal, Buy an EV!

What?

This article is primarily aimed at "coal country", my fellow West Virginians, Kentuckians, who want to support the coal industry.

An EV powered by coal-generated electricity results in less CO2 than any internal combustion engine car. This article covers all the details.

"Autonomous trucking upstart Embark goes from $5b valuation to kaput in 16 months."

I told you about this company in 2017 when it launched. The "16 months" they are referring to is the length of time from its SPAC IPO to its kaputness. (Actually if you really want to sound German, you could say "kaputheit", but I don't think that's an actual word in German -- I think they just say kaputt. The world originally comes from French anyway -- capot -- but capot meant "bonnet" or "covered", not "broken").

I told you about the company again in 2020 when I told you about Forbes' AI 50.

It IPOd at a valuation of 5.16 billion. And as of March 3, it's gone.

Hope none of y'all lost money. My posts are not investment advice.

"AutoFlight has achieved one of the world's longest eVTOL flight in history with a distance of 250 km (155 miles) on a single charge of the aircraft's lithium-ion batteries."

"AutoFlight's Prosperity aircraft uses rotors to lift the aircraft vertically for takeoff, then transitions to horizontal flight on the wing like a traditional airplane. The aircraft is capable of speeds in excess of 200 km/h, over a range greater than 250 km."

"A similar milestone was achieved by Joby Aviation in July 2021, when it covered a total flight distance of 154.6 statute mile at its electric flight base in Big Sur, California."

The aircraft was designed by a guy who made designs for Ferrari, Maserati, McLaren, and MINI, Frank Stephenson.

"If Americans continue to depend on cars at the current rate, by 2050 the US alone would need triple the amount of lithium currently produced for the entire global market, which would have dire consequences for water and food supplies, biodiversity, and Indigenous rights."
