Mismanaged Analogy - by Helen Dale and Lorenzo Warby

#history #politics #imperialism

European Powers could conquer so much of the world with what were mostly minor expeditionary forces because European organisational dominance was so great. This implies that what’s happening with those institutions will continue to matter. It’s simply not true—as the authors claim—that Western mass prosperity “was constructed on a flow of wealth from the less-developed world into the West” (p.143) and it is fundamentally innumerate (and economically illiterate) to claim so.

Peace for Syria. Not a piece of Syria

#geopolitics #imperialism #war #Syria

For 13 years, Syria has been engulfed in unimaginable suffering, with its people enduring war, displacement, and oppression. The fall of Bashar al-Assad’s brutal regime – a symbol of systematic human rights violations including imprisonment, torture, and murder – has sparked hope. Yet, this moment demands more than hope. It demands action.

The international community must finally confront the tragic reality of Syria: a nation treated as a chessboard by global powers, where the people’s humanity is overshadowed by the pursuit of geopolitical advantage. From Russia and Iran to Turkey, the United States, NATO, Israel, and Qatar, these players have exploited Syria, each backing factions to further their own interests. These interventions have fuelled sectarian violence, displaced millions, and committed crimes against humanity, all while leaving Syrians to grapple with unending loss and despair.

It is time to say enough. Enough of treating Syria as a prize to be divided. Enough of forced displacement and the endless deaths at Europe’s borders. Enough of racism in countries meant to be places of refuge. The cycle of normalised violence must end.

In Syria dirty war, “our side” has won - by Aaron Maté

#geopolitics #imperialism #war #Syria

Biden and his team of Obama administration veterans, who began the CIA war against Syria in 2011, now find themselves leaving office just as their regime change project achieves its goal. After hundreds of thousands of deaths, millions of refugees, and a country decimated – all so that a secular dictator could be replaced by a former leader of Al Qaeda -- it will not be a surprise if Biden and his aides soon stop taking credit for the fact that “our side” has won.

Russian colonialism is not reformable says historian Botakoz Kassymbekova

Most #Russians seem unwilling to give up the privileges the government gives them at the expense of the country's #ethnic #minorities

"Russian dissidents want to retain the #empire, which means they want to maintain the status quo,” Kassymbekova alleges. “This status quo will never bring democracy, simply because an empire is an #authoritarian system," she adds.

Some believe #Russia is among the last empires still standing, being a vast and highly centralized state that rules over a variety of different peoples. Russian “national republics,” regions that were created to give a form of autonomy to national minorities living in them, are, in fact, governed from Moscow, with governors directly appointed by Russian President Vladimir Putin

Devant la guerre - by Branko Milanovic

#history #geopolitics #imperialism #war

As this brief description makes clear similarities with today’s situation are many. Whereas the conclusion of the Cold War did not have an official ending similar to Versailles, its main contours reproduced Versailles. The satisfied powers, the winners of the Cold War, were the US, UK, France and foremost Germany that regained unity. On the other hand, the “New World Order” produced one large power (Russia) that was from the very beginning unsatisfied with the outcome, especially since Russia, like Germany in 1918, did not at all feel defeated. From the very beginning when under Yeltsin the country was half-destroyed and internationally behaved more or less like a US vassal, Russia was resentful of one aspect of the victors’ policies: the extension of their military alliance to Russia’s borders.

The Real Villains - by Caitlin Johnstone

#politics #capitalism #imperialism #war

billionaire corporations — the most profitable ones are far more abusive. They actively work to create more and more war, ecocide, exploitation and inequality, because these things increase their profits. They lobby governments for more wars and militarism around the world because they manufacture weapons of war. They lobby governments to shrink environmental regulations because they maximize their corporate profits by pillaging the earth and externalizing the costs of industry onto the biosphere we all depend on. They lobby governments for fewer worker protections because worker protections eat into profits. They lobby governments for exploitative trade agreements because globalization gives them a steady supply of cheap wage slaves with fewer workers’ rights. They lobby governments to privatize services and resources so that they can turn things people are already getting into coercive mechanisms of private profit extraction.

Assad Is Out, Woke Al-Qaeda Is In - by Caitlin Johnstone

#geopolitics #imperialism #war #Syria

Many pundits on my end of the commentary spectrum had been calling those proxy wars self-defeating and framing them as the desperate flailings of a dying empire which will only accelerate its demise, but now here we are watching the empire score a victory it’s been chasing for years, with the western/Israeli stranglehold on the middle east growing tighter than ever.

Blinken Is Pushing For Ukrainian Teens To Die For US Hegemony

#geopolitics #imperialism #war

The “left” is divided on Syria only in the same way it’s divided on Ukraine and other conflicts: Marxists, dedicated peace activists and opponents of the western empire on one side; shitlibs, NATO simps and anarkiddies on the other. The high level of leftish unity we’ve been seeing between those two groups on Gaza this past year is the exception, not the norm.

The significance of Trump’s war to maintain dollar #supremacy

The threat by incoming US president Donald #Trump to impose a 100 percent tariff on the #BRICS group of countries if there are attempts to set up an alternative to the #US #dollar as the global currency is a significant expression of the crisis of US #imperialism, which is setting it on the road to a third world war.

Unrestricted #War

Many people think that #imperialism stopped after the U.K. became weak. Actually, the U.S. has conducted a hidden imperialism through the U.S. #dollar and has made other countries its financial colony. Today, many countries, including China, have their own sovereignty, Constitution, and government, but they are dependent on the U.S. dollar. Their products are measured in dollars and they have to hand over their material wealth to the U.S. in exchange for the U.S. dollar.

This can be seen clearly in the cycle of the U.S. dollar index over the past 40 years. Since 1971, when the U.S. started to print money freely, the U.S. dollar index has been dropping in value. For ten years, the index has kept going down, indicating that it was overprinted.

Actually, it was not necessarily a bad thing for the world when the U.S. dollar index went down. It meant an increase in the supply of dollars and a large outflow of dollars to other countries. A lot of U.S. dollars went to Latin America. This #investment created the economic boom in Latin America in the 1970s.

In 1979, after flooding the world with U.S. dollars for nearly 10 years, the Americans decided to reverse the process. The U.S. dollar index started climbing in 1979. Dollars flew back to the U.S. and other regions received fewer dollars. Latin America’s economy boomed due to an ample supply of dollar investment, but this suddenly stopped as its investments dried up.

The Latin American countries tried to save themselves.

Manufacturing is a war now - by Noah Smith - Noahpinion

#geopolitics #imperialism #manufacturing #war

At that point, what will the U.S. do if neither we nor our allies can make munitions in large numbers? We will have to choose to either 1) escalate to nuclear war, or 2) lose the war to China. Those will be our only options. Either way, the U.S. and its allies will lose.

Notice that the previous sentence explains perfectly what's happening in Ukraine. Ukraine can't win and never could because of this and it was obvious from the very start of the "hot war" in 2022.
