#Wubuntu: The lovechild of #Windows and #Linux nobody asked for

source:

Wubuntu removes some apps that are common to most official #Ubuntu flavors, sometimes replacing them with a more Windows-like alternative, or sometimes several alternatives. It also adds fairly significant additional components. In some places, it goes to considerable lengths to be familiar to folks who only know Windows users; in others, things are unmodified from the standard #KDE or #Kubuntu behavior.

KDE is Making its Own Distro, and So is GNOME

The image shows a computer screen displaying the system settings of what seems to be a KDE Plasma desktop environment. In the foreground, various system settings options are visible, including input & output, display & monitor, and connected devices. The background features a cartoonish landscape with soft, pastel colors. The main focus is on the system settings menus, with file manager windows showing in the center. There is also a small 'Apply' button at the bottom, which suggests some configuration changes have been made.
KDE’s distro won’t be the same as their KDE Neon (which is Ubuntu based) but it is uncertain whether the new one will replace KDE Neon (I think not because of the differences).

What is known about KDE’s new distro is the following:

  • Be the recommended KDE operating system with stability and user experience as priority
  • Offering a secure experience
  • A focus on modern technologies (kind of like Fedora)
  • Immutable core
  • Wayland by default
  • Close to rolling release schedule

The immutable core is pretty interesting, as that is a newer approach that I’ve not gone for yet. So we’ll only know for sure once there are versions out for testing.

It does look like they are trying to marry the benefits of a rolling release with stability, through the immutable core, good testing, and probably built-in rollbacks etc.

And it looks like GNOME is going for a very similar approach too.

An update in my latest Linux distro hopping experiment: I'm a few days into experimenting with the Fedora KDE Plasma spin in the VM. Graphics can still be hit or miss but that's just Wayland and VirtualBox not playing nice. I think everything has settled down except VSCodium has a bug where bringing up the menu crashes it. That's fine, I've been wanting to play around with Zed and this is a good opportunity. I have my software stack recreated for all my writing/publishing and going to try to crank out my first blog post in awhile on this new system. #linux #kde

Thank you all for the many recommendations to the LINUX issue. There were so many that I can't respond to all of them. I've also been using Linux for over 20 years and love it, even though I've never gone beyond Ubuntu. In the end, it's just a tool. My life was saved by music. (music with such chaotic vibrations that no computer could ever create it!) #linux #kde #linuxmint #foss #thankyou

Right, as of a about a month ago, I think I can finally say that I've switched permanently to #Wayland from #X11. I've tinkered with Wayland for several years but always came back to #X since there were too many glitches, or things in development, which made for a shaky experience when compared to the #XDesktop. Although there are still some minor things, like, say #Birdtray for #Thunderbired not quite working as it should, everything else is at least as good now for the stuff I do.

I recently bought a #Wacom #DrawingTablet for my #Laptop. As with other #Hardware or #Peripherals that has been around for a while, there is no need to download and #drivers for it under #GNU #Linux as it's detected automatically and everything just works without any fuss. #Programs such as #Xournal++ detect variations in #PenPressure and draws lines of varying thickness depending upon it. It's taking practice but the results are quite precise in terms of position too. This will make both note taking and calculations during seminars much better.
