#rings

All the planets in the #solar-system are undergoing #big #changes #now, due to the 12,000 year solar #cycle.

a science article lately mentioning that Nasa or some similar agency had noticed that #Saturn’s #rings had started to #heat the #planet itself, which scientist did not quite know or understand up to now.

´The #discovery: Saturn's vast ring system is heating the giant planet's upper atmosphere.´

The chilly outer planet #Uranus, located roughly 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion kilometers) from the Sun, isn't thought of as a "ringed planet", but that's because its rings are far too faint to be seen by most telescopes. In fact, it took until the 1986 flight of the Voyager 2 spacecraft out beyond the edges of our #solar-system for astronomers to confirm the existence of Uranus' #13 #rings.

Quote She knew everything but the question. She was well aware that there would be a complete annular eclipse of the Sun visible from their driving destination: Lake Abert in Oregon. She knew that the next ring-of-fire eclipse would occur in the USA only in 16 more years, making this a rare photographic opportunity. She was comfortable with the plan: that she and her boyfriend would appear in front of the eclipse in silhouette, sometimes alone, and sometimes together. She knew that the annular phase of this eclipse would last only a few minutes and she helped in the many hours of planning. She could see their friend who set up the camera about 400 meters away at the bottom of a ridge. What she didn't know was the question she would be asked. But she did know the answer: "yes".

#EARTH'S #RING CURRENT IS LEAKING: Did you know that Earth has #rings? Unlike #Saturn's rings, which are vast disks of glittering #ice, Earth's rings are made of #electricity--a donut-shaped circuit carrying millions of amps around our #planet. On July 26th, heat from this ring current leaked into the upper atmosphere, creating a red arc over Slocan, British Columbia:

"I almost fell over when I checked my camera," says photographer Harlan Thomas. "There was one of the brightest SAR arcs that I have seen! It lasted around 45 minutes."

SARs were discovered in 1956 at the beginning of the Space Age. At first, researchers didn’t know what they were and unwittingly gave them a misleading name: "Stable Auroral Red arcs." However, they are not auroras; the red glow comes from Earth's ring current system.

The ring current springs a leak most often during geomagnetic storms. Indeed, a G1-class storm was underway at the time of Thomas's sighting. That, however, was just a minor storm.

#Saturn’s #Rings Are Acting Strange

New images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope herald the start of the planet’s “spoke season” surrounding its equinox, when enigmatic features appear across its rings. The cause of the spokes, as well as their seasonal variability, has yet to be explained.

August, an early release image from the James Webb #Space #Telescope revealed a #bizarre sight: as many as 17 #concentric #rings encircling a #binary #star #system, called #Wolf-Rayet 140. Was it a #spiral #nebula, an alien megastructure or just an optical illusion?

Nope, I don't know what this is. Some kind of spiral nebula around WR140. I'm sure we'll find out more later.

The answer, revealed today, is #dust. A new paper published in Nature Astronomy explains how stellar winds in this odd binary system blasts dust into near-perfect concentric circles every time the two stars come close to each other in their eccentric orbits.

WEBB PHOTOGRAPHS #NEPTUNE'S #RINGS: The James Webb Space Telescope has just captured the clearest view of Neptune’s rings in more than 30 years. NASA relased the new image on Sept. 21st:

"It has been three decades since we last saw these faint, dusty rings, and this is the first time we’ve seen them in infrared light," notes Heidi Hammel, an interdisciplinary scientist for Webb. Some of the rings have not been detected since NASA’s Voyager 2 became the first spacecraft to observe Neptune during its flyby in 1989.

The rings of Neptune, like those of #Uranus, are thought to be relatively young; their age is significantly less than that of the #SolarSystem. They were likely created by the collisional fragmentation of onetime inner moons and are made of extremely dark organic compounds processed by radiation.

Webb also captured seven of Neptune’s 14 known #moons. Dominating this Webb portrait of Neptune is a very bright point of light radiating diffraction spikes seen in many of Webb's images, but this is not a star. Rather, this is Neptune’s large and unusual moon, #Triton.
