The question of whether global warming is accelerating is hotly contested among climate scientists. While some have argued that the current rate of warming — which hit an all-time high last year — is strictly correlated with increased fossil fuel emissions and therefore aligned with current climate models, others have cautioned that the Earth is far more sensitive to fossil fuels than previously thought and that humanity is hurtling toward tipping points from which there can be no return.

In a recent study, a group of researchers from the University of Melbourne complicated this debate with an analysis of warming rates across the globe and possible causes for regional differences. Their principal finding: The globe is getting hotter at a faster rate, but this acceleration is occurring unevenly.

Surprisingly, densely populated areas with large concentrations of poverty — megacities like Cairo and Mumbai — are warming more slowly than urban centers in Europe and North America. Why?

The researchers found that the large quantity of aerosol particles in the air of highly polluted cities reflect sunlight back out into space and, at least in the short term, can have a net cooling effect on populations.

The extinction risk to plants could be worse than previously thought, according to a landmark report.

Just half a pound of the stuff may remove as much carbon dioxide as a tree can, according to early tests. Once the carbon is absorbed by the powder, it can be released into safe storage or be used in industrial processes, like carbonizing drinks.

"Half a pound ?" "As much as a tree ?" These are strange units indeed, Guardian...

In the lab, Yaghi’s team tested the new powder and found that it could successfully absorb and release carbon more than 100 times. It fills up with carbon in about two hours, and then must be heated to release the gas before starting the process over again. It only requires a temperature of about 120F to release the carbon; that makes it an improvement over other methods, which require a much higher temperature.

That feature means places that already produce extra heat – such as factories or power plants – could use it to release the gas and start the cycle again. The material could be incorporated into existing carbon capture systems or future technology.

Yaghi says he could imagine a future in which people build large plants using the material in every city of 1 million people or more around the world. He has plans to scale the use of this type of carbon capture with his Irvine, California-based company, Atoco, and believes the powder can be manufactured in multi-ton quantities in less than a year.

But when the submersible returned with detailed images of the underside of the ice shelf, Wåhlin was surprised at what she saw; peaks, valleys, plateaus and teardrop-shaped formations.

Ice can melt at different rates along the same ice shelf, depending on the movement of the water, and Ran's images revealed the basal topography of the Dotson Ice Shelf varies significantly from east to west. In the east the ice is thick and melts slowly. "That's where we saw the biggest surprise," says Wåhlin. "It looked like the Grand Canyon. There were plateaus and swirly patterns melted into the ice."

Moving towards the centre of the ice shelf, the images showed terraced features. Meanwhile in the west, the ice was noticeably thinner with smooth features, indicating faster-moving currents and so higher melt rates.

The researchers saw patterns on the base of the ice shelf they were not expecting – perhaps formed by flowing water under the influence of Earth's rotation, says Wåhlin. Current models can't explain these discoveries, she says, and there is a wealth of processes left to discover in future research missions under the glaciers.

The Midnight Hour is over. There's no heat in the building or my apartment. It's 30°F or -1C. I woke up earlier, with cold hands even though I had a few blankets piled on top of me. I've barricaded myself in my bedroom/office with two new space heaters warming up the room.
The1918 building has a long history of 'No Heat' problems, especially in the dead of Winter. Anticipating this, I had purchased the space heaters in November. During the day, when I must be in other rooms, I also have a large pot of water steaming on the stove for comforting steam heat. It helps with humidity. When it's really cold, I have an addition pot of water steaming on a hot plate on the floor.

This is THE LAND OF YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN. A person has to find way to survive and stay healthy.

After participating in another peaceful protest, the two activists were also charged with criminal contempt, which carries a seven-year maximum sentence.

The assault charges were dropped after the security guard failed to submit a deposition. The contempt charges were resolved by the pair pleading guilty to “disorderly conduct” – referring to Rozendaal playing the cello in a public plaza outside Citibank HQ and Connon sheltering him from the rain with an umbrella.

Playing cello is now a serious crime. Sadly, the US is not the only country criminalising peaceful #climate protesters.😔
