No matter what is happening in the world, we must be like the rock with the waves crashing around it, as Marcus Aurelius said. It stands fast and still, and eventually the sea falls still...if only for a moment.

Separate matters into two buckets: what's in our control and what's not in our control.

The truth is: so much of what we spend time on is not in our control.

Extreme Stoicism

image

A new ideal for myself: extreme stoicism. This means to be irrationally stoic. To swallow insults like chewing glass, to harness your anger as energy for personally productive things, and to hold your tongue like a dragon.

It takes a lot more skill to be stoic, than to say what’s really on your mind.

I propose a simple idea: when you’re angry, or feel injustice, wait at least 48 hours before responding.

Anger out of strength, or anger out of weakness?

When a lot of people get angry and heap insults on the other person, it is often our weakness. However if you really do feel you’re in the right, your anger is a virtue. But still to say what’s on your mind, it’s still often weakness.

Because when you say what’s on your mind, it almost never resolves the issue at hand. And injustice is inherent in life.

Also when the doubt, be silent. You don’t always need a response for everyone’s comment.

Ethics are Aesthetic

image

selfie ERIC KIM black and white red crimson

Not sure if any other thinkers have thought this but,

Ethics are aesthetic.

What do I mean?

Assuming that ethics is the philosophy of action (embodied reality, interaction with other human beings in society), then the question is:

How should one act in society?

It is ultimately an aesthetic thing. To act what you consider elegantly, beautiful, strong, and in a lofty aristocratic way.

What would John Wick do?

fortis Fortuna adiuvat john wick tattoo

If we consider John Wick as part Stoic and part Samurai, then we think --

When we see how John Wick acts in the film, do we think it is 'cool' or badass?

I say so. To speak less (Laconic, like a Spartan soldier). To not complain about pain and suffering. To be one-minded in our pursuits.

Spartan 300

Ethics are public

Abstract red king Leonidas 300 Sparta

I do not think there is such a thing as 'private' ethics. When we think about the 'public', it has to do with any other human being besides you. For example, how you interact with family members or your children is also the 'public'.

Then it seems the aesthetic goal we have of ourselves:

Seek some sort of ideal or perfection in terms of our bodily physique, as well as our ethics (how we interact with others).

For myself:

  1. Stoic ideal: To become harder, less petty. Less soft.
  2. Muscular ideal: To become more muscular (Hercules ideal).

Stoicism week : part 2

Yesterday I began with a look at the main difficulty with Stoicism : why care about anyone's so-called "suffering" if literally everything is a subjective opinion ? If a victim shouldn't care they're being abused, why should an abuser care that they're being abusive ? This does seem to cause real problems for Epictetus, as while he mostly advocates for everyone being nice to each other, he also not infrequently slips into selfishness and victim blaming.

His solution, explored here in part two, appeared to be a quite ingenious one. Nothing matter except opinion... but opinion does itself matter, and can be judged in a more than subjective way. Someone committing criminal acts intrinsically harms themselves. Thus a victim can learn to endure hardship whereas a criminal cannot escape self-harm through their own acts : Stoicism is definitely not supposed to be a license for immoral behaviour.

... except that while this might be a clever solution, it's not terribly convincing. No examination as to what constitutes good or bad behaviour is given, so who gets to decide who's hurt themselves or not ? And if criminals aren't aware that what they're doing is wrong, then it makes very little sense to describe them as "suffering" in any meaningful sense. Most fundamentally of all, how can their actions be said to be immoral if they don't actually hurt anyone else ?

There aren't any easy answers to this. The problem seems to stem from some very definitely absolute ideas about the nature of free will, of which more in part three tomorrow.
