72hrs after devastating earthquakes hit #Turkey & #Syria

After working through the third freezing night, more than 16,000 people are now known to have lost their lives.

In reality, this number is likely to be much much higher. Tragically, the critical 72 hour window for finding people alive has passed. But there are still moments of hope, and the meticulous search continues.

In some regions in rural Turkey and Syria there is still no proper equipment for searching, and people are having to use their bare hands.

The nights are still bringing freezing temperatures, which last night reached as low as minus 6. People are still sleeping in cars or on the streets, including children and babies.

Many search and rescue teams are now moving into the recovery of the bodies, and urgent supplies are needed for those who are injured and people who have been left homeless, including medical supplies, heat, blankets, food, water, fuel and shelter.

As the situation continues, what will be most important will be making sure that people are kept warm, fed, hydrated and have access to medical care and shelter.

The WHO has warned of a secondary health crisis in the aftermath of the earthquakes which could be worse than the quake itself, if these supplies aren’t properly sourced and distributed to all regions affected.

She survived some 30 hours under rubles holding his brother close, and her beautiful smile when rescues uncovered her is absolutely priceless.

Unfortunately, her parents were not so lucky. The number of casualties in #Syria is going to shake the world as time is running out for the survivors of the deadly #earthquake(s) that devastated parts of #Turkey and Syria yesterday.

The earth still shaking!

There seems to be no end to the horrors of the current wave of earthquakes in #Turkey/ #Syria.

In the course of an hour, the area hit by the deadly #Earthquakes yesterday was hit by no less than 7 #aftershocks of the scale of 4 to 5.

These shocks, that wouldn't be of any importance in normal case, spreading fear and bringing down multi-story buildings already damaged by the strong quakes of yesterday.

Shared video on social media shows a large apartment complex crushing into rubblles in front of shocked people driving on the highway.

Unbelievable video from last night's earthquake in Syria

This is one of the worst earthquakes in recent years. Many apartment complexes have collapsd because of this unusually long and strong quale.

The casualties reported are 500 but the numbers will definitely increase.

My thoughts are with those people in southern #Turkey and northern #Syria.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region -

The US Representative to Northeast Syria Nicholas Granger on Saturday reiterated Washington’s support for the area’s economic projects and reinforcing its stability, during a visit to the Kurdish administration in the country’s northeast (Rojava).

“Nicholas Granger affirmed the continued support for sustainable projects in the region, and their support for economic projects in general, in addition to their support for strengthening the security situation and maintaining security and stability in northern and eastern Syria,” read a statement from the Kurdish administration following the meeting.

Turkey’s “continued threats” to launch another military operation and its impact on the security and economy of the area were also discussed.

Turkey launched its latest aerial campaign dubbed Operation Claw-Sword targeting Kurdish positions in northern Syria and the Kurdistan Region on November 20. The operation has led to a barrage of drones and airstrikes targeting the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The latest Turkish incursion in northern Syria presents a danger to US personnel as they maintain a presence in the proximity of the area. US officials have repeatedly called for de-escalation as it would be detrimental to the efforts underway to combat the terror group.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in December that a ground operation would take place “soon.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Al Arabiya’s Nadia Bilbassy on Sunday that a military incursion in Syria is not “in anyone’s interests” as it jeopardizes the efforts made against the Islamic State (ISIS).

Turkey “has legitimate security interests. There’s no disputing that. But those interests can be dealt with effectively without, I think, a #military #intervention,” said Blinken.
