PFLAG National Asks Court to Block the #Texas Attorney General’s Latest Targeting of Texan Families with #Transgender Youth
National nonprofit and its lawyers argue the Office is abusing its power with broad and intrusive demand for organizational records
Affiliate: ACLU of Texas
February 29, 2024

..."On February 9, PFLAG National—which has eighteen chapters in Texas—received civil demands from the Attorney General’s Office to turn over documents, communications, and information related to PFLAG National and the organization’s work helping families with transgender adolescents. PFLAG National is a plaintiff in two lawsuits filed against restrictions on gender-affirming medical care for adolescents in Texas: one lawsuit Loe v. Texas, challenging SB 14, the state’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors, and PFLAG v. Abbott, challenging the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services’ rule mandating investigations of parents who work with medical professionals to provide their adolescent transgender children with medically necessary healthcare.

Today, the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, the ACLU, Lambda Legal, and Transgender Law Center filed a separate lawsuit on behalf of PFLAG National in Travis County District Court requesting a temporary restraining order against the Attorney General’s investigative demands on the grounds the Attorney General’s Office is acting outside its authority, attempting to subvert the discovery process in the separate lawsuits challenging SB 14 and the DFPS Rule, and seeking to violate PFLAG’s and its members’ constitutional free speech and association rights, as well as the right to be free from unconstitutional searches and seizures."...

Facts For Peace: The Billionaire-Backed Campaign Attacking the Palestinian Cause

A week after Hamas launched its surprise attack on #Israel, the social media page Facts For Peace was created with the message, “Get the facts on Hamas, Israel, and peace in the region.”

A few days later, the page began advertising its content. “Here is Hamas’ Founding Charter in Their Own Words,” one sponsored post reads alongside video clips of Hamas leaders speaking and snapshots of the document. The page has spent more than $945,000 on #Facebook ads since the war began nearly four months ago, and according to POLITICO, was the single largest pro-Israel advertiser between November 2 and December 1, spending over $450,000 on #Meta ads. The ads have mainly reached male-identifying Facebook users under the age of 35 in #California, #Texas, #NewYork, and #Florida.

Labeled as a media/news company on Facebook, now Meta, the page’s posts and its supporters appear less concerned with accurate reporting and more involved in shaping public opinion.

In November, news website #Semafor reported real-estate billionaire Barry #Sternlicht launched Facts For Peace and sought $1 million in donations each from some of the world’s wealthiest individuals. “This is just one of several behind-the-scenes efforts by business tycoons — many, though not all of them Jewish — to support Israel since the attack by Hamas,” Samafor reported.

Public opinion will surely shift as scenes, real or fabricated by Hamas, of civilian Palestinian suffering will surely erode [Israel’s] current empathy in the world community,” Sternlicht wrote in an email, seen by Semafor, soliciting contributions from Wall Street, Hollywood, and tech moguls. “We must get ahead of the #narrative.”

The Residents of Eagle Pass, #Texas, Just Want Their Town Back
Greg Abbott is fighting Joe Biden over a small border town’s community park—and the Supreme Court is refereeing. It’s turned life there upside down.
BY MOLLY OLMSTEAD

..."Since the park was taken, the public has been allowed in only sparingly. (Mostly, it’s to use the golf course adjacent to the park.) A group that included Garcia was permitted in to put up a memorial to the migrants who drowned in the river. Reporters have been allowed in to take a look. But there have been no more people coming in to play soccer or fish or kayak in the town’s only public river access point.

And that’s been particularly tough for Jessie Fuentes, the town’s only river outfitter, who provides canoes and kayaks for recreation on the Rio Grande. Fuentes, who has lived in Eagle Pass his whole life, grew up with the river and sees it as essential to the community’s culture. Losing Shelby Park and its river access has been hard for him.

“Now the only people I’m putting in are journalists and professors and individuals that want to see the utter destruction,” he said. “What’s been happening has really shut me down.”

For Fuentes, the real problems began not with the closure of Shelby Park but with the state’s interference in the Rio Grande itself. Texas first put out its river buoys as a kind of floating barrier to block wading migrants on July 7; Fuentes filed a lawsuit against the state that same day.

Immediately, he stepped into national politics. “When I first sued the governor, I got calls from all across America,” he said. “Crazy people, saying all kinds of stuff about me.”

His suit, which he later dropped in deference to the federal government’s legal challenge, argued that Abbott was overstepping his power. He was angry, he said in a phone interview recently, not just about his business, but also about the damage all these efforts were doing to the ecosystem.

“They bulldozed the islands, they bulldozed the edges of the river, they put in concrete and concertina wire. They destroyed sanctuaries,” he said. “The river system is being destroyed.”

But as frustrated as some of the town was with the park’s seizure, it isn’t just the river or even the matter of autonomy that bothers the community most. The town of Eagle Pass is dependent on trade with Mexico. Its economy is driven not by manufacturing but by providing infrastructure to support international trade. So many residents see border issues from a less political and more practical perspective: An influx in migrants is a problem because it strains the town’s economic churn, slowing down traffic into the city. But to many, that particular frustration was made even worse by Abbott’s decision, first in the fall and again in December, to enact mandatory inspections of all commercial trucks. The new wait time put particular strain on refrigeration trucks and on their drivers. Facing the prospect of waiting up to 16 hours at Eagle Pass’ one open bridge, truck drivers began to route through other border towns.",,,

Texas asks Georgia clinic for transgender youths’ records | The Texas Tribune

Karen Loewy, a lawyer with Lambda Legal representing organizations and Texas families of transgender youth trying to block SB 14 in court, said there is “zero authorization” in the law for Paxton’s requests to clinics outside of Texas.
“It’s hard not to see this as part and parcel of the AG’s scorched-earth approach to persecuting trans kids and their parents who are being forced to undertake travel outside of Texas to get their kids the medically necessary care they need,” Loewy said.

Half of #US #Governors 'Stand With #Texas' in Defying Supreme Court at #Border
OLIVIA ROSANE
Jan 25, 2024

..."Abbott first posted on social media on Tuesday that the Texas National Guard would "continue to hold the line" at Eagle Pass. Then, in a statement released Wednesday, Abbott claimed that the Biden administration had "broken the compact" between the states and federal government by, in Abbott's view, failing to enforce immigration laws. He has won the support of at least 25 governors for declaring immigration an "invasion" and invoking "Texas' constitutional authority to defend and protect itself."

In a column published in The Philadelphia Inquirer on Thursday, Will Bunch observed that some online commenters had likened the potential standoff at Eagle Pass to the one at Fort Sumter, North Carolina, that triggered the Civil War. However, he thought another historical comparison had merit.

"Abbott's reckless, cruelty-is-the-point policies and his defiant stand are also posing the greatest threat to federal authority since the South's 'massive resistance' in the 1950s and '60s to the Supreme Court's landmark Brown v. Board of Ed ruling that mandated school integration," Bunch wrote.
...
Democratic Texas Congressmen Greg Casar and Joaquin Castro have called for Biden to take federal control of the Texas National Guard.

"We can create an immigration system that is safe, orderly, and humane," Casar posted on social media. "It's Democrats' job to push back on razor wire, inhumane cages, and broken policies of the past."...

Texas mother Kate Cox on the outcome of her legal fight for an abortion: "It was crushing"

Lifelong Texans Kate and Justin Cox were already parents to a young girl and boy when they found out last August that Kate was pregnant again. "We have the two children that we absolutely adore, and yeah, the thought of having a third one added to the family was incredible," Justin said.

But a series of tests revealed the baby they were expecting, a girl, had trisomy 18, a genetic condition that causes severe developmental problems.

According to a 2016 study, nine out of 10 infants won't survive more than a year. And for Kate and Justin's baby, the prognosis was even more grim.

Kate said, "We asked, 'How long we could have with our baby – best-case scenario?' And she said she thought maybe a week. … If she survived the pregnancy and the birth, that it might be a week. And what that would mean as far as – I didn't want to watch her suffer. That would be very hard. She would have had to be placed directly on to hospice. There's no treatment that can be done." ...

Their inhumanity is beyond scope!

... A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press, said Cuellar's description of the events was accurate. In a statement Saturday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Texas officials obstructed Border Patrol's attempts to rescue the migrants on Friday.

"Tragically, a woman and two children drowned last night in the Shelby Park area of Eagle Pass, which was commandeered by the State of Texas earlier this week," the department said. "In responding to a distress call from the Mexican government, Border Patrol agents were physically barred by Texas officials from entering the area." ...

... Federal officials and a Texas congressman said National Guard soldiers deployed by Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott did not allow Border Patrol agents to attempt to rescue the migrants. Earlier this week, Texas National Guard soldiers abruptly seized control of a public park in Eagle Pass that Border Patrol had been using to hold migrants, marking the latest escalation in an intensifying political and legal feud between Abbott and President Biden over U.S. border policy. ...
