The Bubble Telescope confirmed another planet with a tachyon signature, but hyper-scans suggested nothing more than a stone age civilisation that died out tens of thousands of years ago.

The evidence was mounting. There were echoes of technologically advanced civilisations. Wormhole signatures briefly appearing, then vanishing.

Dr Kim sighed. There was only one theory that explained it all: Every civilisation that discovers time travel ends up going back in time and obliterating itself.

It only had to happen once, of course, no matter how many times it was successfully averted. She put down her half-full mug of coffee and considered her options.

“Breaking news: Dr Barbara Kim, renowned for her work on quantum gravity, was found dead earlier today. Suicide is suspected. Dr Kim seems to have destroyed her life’s work, smashing servers and burning down her office, before taking her own life.

“She is the fourth theoretical physicist to commit suicide in the past few years. After the break, we’ll be asking experts if these scientists all discovered something so terrible that it pushed them over the edge. Whatever it was, we’ll find it eventually. It’s only a matter of time.”

It was a 3D boardgame, as best I can describe it. Ashok and Prima were teaching me the rules.

It wasn't more complicated than other games I'd played, but it had some strange features. Sometimes another player's move forced you to redo your previous move.

"Who goes first?" I asked, figuring it would be clearer once we were playing.

"Whoever wins the next game goes first in this one."

They both smiled. It took me a moment. Ah, time travellers! It all made more sense now.

"But how do you know we'll play another game after this? Why not make the winner of this game go first?"

"Then we'd know who won before we started! Where's the fun in that?"

Fifth and sixth Love and Anarchy festival days. Managed to make ten out of twelve of the films I had bought tickets for. Kind of annoying to miss the few, but that happens.

Same time next year?

Warning: spoilers!

All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White (2023)

Bambino is a motorcycle courier in Lagos. During a delivery he meets Bawa, a wannabe photographer who takes his picture. The pair develop a complex relationship of mutual interest through their time together with Bambino taking Bawa around Lagos to photograph.

Throughout the film we see the conflict of Bambino realizing he may be gay and rejecting those thoughts multiple times during the film. Female friend Ifeyinwa is caught in the middle, with feelings for Bambino, who ends up using her to test whether he is gay or not. In the end, even at the risk of suffering violence for being gay, Bambino finds what is important to him and accepts his feelings for a man.

A well produced film with lots of pretty photographic shots of Lagos while taking the journey of discovery of ones preferences and learning to accept ones feelings.

And the king said, what a fantastic machine (2023)

Missed this documentary about photography and film due to not feeling to well Saturday night and wanting to sleep a bit late. Boo :(

Lola (2022)

What if there was a machine that allowed you to see future radio and TV broadcasts? Invented by two sisters at the beginning of world war 2, the machine seems like the perfect way to defeat Nazi Germany. Soon after they realize they've erased David Bowie, they end up using the machine to help sink the U-boat fleet, thinking it will provide a great victory, but at the cost of an American civilian liner being sunk. Unfortunately, this causes the US to not enter the war and the eventual invasion of the UK by Nazi forces.

How do you undo all this? You make a documentary about it, air it and hope that you view it in history, thus avoiding the whole mess from happening. Messing with time is easy, right?

Cute very indie scifi film with lots of repurposed historical footage showing Britain under Nazi rule. Unfortunately the footage of cheering crowds would have likely been very true if an invasion had succeeded.

Here is the idea of #3movies for franchises ...

1) My all time favourite franchise is "Mission Impossible": https://www.looper.com/333275/the-mission-impossible-movies-ranked-worst-to-best/
I don't know of any other fanchiese where every episode is so thrilling and there is no significant drop in quality. Of course, you have to be a little enthusiastic about agent thrillers to watch it, and compared to reality, it seems unlikely that the world has to be saved every time. Overall, the storyline is more logical than James Bond and not so much bedtime stories.

2) My current favourite franchise is "Hunger Games": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunger_Games_%28film_series%29
I like the story and the hidden criticism of #capitalism. The first part introduces the world and is not too brutal because the film is also for 12 year olds. The second part has basically the same story as the first part but shows much more of the world and Katniss learns what an important icon of the resistance she has become. The third part shows how propaganda works and how brutal a civil war is. If you look closely, you can see that Katniss suffers from depression and has to focus again and again in order to persevere at all. The ending, however, is a huge affront. It is illogical because it is not explained why the new government should be better now and Katniss retreats quite conservatively and starts a family, as is expected of a good American woman.

3) The worst franchise is "Terminator": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminator_(franchise)
The first part used to excite people, otherwise the franchise wouldn't have been created. But I think the first part has not aged well and today the special effects look very cheap. The 2nd part, however, is one of the best action movies of all time. Exciting from the first to the last minute with action sequences that still look very good today. Everything in the film is somehow right and that's the problem - the film could not be topped. Then there's a good series with a female teen terminator who protects John Connor during school time. But everything else in the franchise is just bad. With all the time travel they could have built a wonderful #mindfuck like in "Back to the Future" but instead it became more and more arbitrary and suddenly there was a new timeline and everything that happened before lost its validity. That's what happens when you have absolutely no ideas and want to upset all the fans.
