Back in the days, your neighbour having foreign troops on their territory was regarded as threateniing.
Indeed, you'd regard your neighbour as being "occupied".
Hello, NATO, having fun?
Got enough bases and advisers - enough "spread"?
Hello USA - 800 bases? Keeping the world safe....?
To understand how wars start, follow timelines.
Most people agree, surprisingly, that WW2 started with the Versailles Treaty - look at what happened to Germany and Poland's borders - what on earth were the allies thinking?
Allied mobilisation - in the real sense - started in 1938.

On March 10, 1945, the capital of Japan was carpet bombed by the U.S. Air Force.

Several hundred tons of bombs and napalm were dropped on Tokyo, killing at least 80,000 residents, most of them civilians. The Japanese would later call the event the "Night of Black Snow."

It was the most destructive conventional weapons raid in history. Tokyo, which was mostly made up of wooden buildings, was literally turned into an inferno, and the next morning, it was a solid ash heap.

A Japanese reporter wrote: "Clouds of smoke, soot, and sparks flew over the city, raised by the storm. That night, we thought that all of Tokyo had turned to embers."

America First Committee

The #AmericaFirst Committee (AFC) was the foremost United States isolationist pressure group against American entry into World War II.

...

however, it was controversial for the anti-Semitic and pro-fascist views of some of its most prominent speakers, leaders, and members.

Trump has therefore deliberately focussed his #campaign on America First. This should make it clear to everyone where the #future will lead if he is elected. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Lie about Pearl Harbor

Under Friedman’s direction, the SIS cryptanalysts, and primarily the people from the Rowlett team, by 1940 achieved, with the help of their mathematical “magic,” truly great success in deciphering Japan’s secret correspondence. The main success was the massive breaking of a system codenamed Purple, a new Japanese cipher machine for diplomatic correspondence. And although the corre- spondence of the Japanese armed forces was decoded much worse and slower, the volume and efficiency of decrypting the Japanese Foreign Ministry materials gave intelligence analysts every reason to believe that the U.S. authorities were fully aware of plans and intentions of a potential enemy.

In particular, shortly before the disaster at Pearl Harbor, such an episode took place. Here it is reconstructed according to the per- sonal testimony of its participant, military linguist John Hurt (John Hurt. “The Japanese Problem in the Signal Intelligence Service”. NSA William F. Friedman Collection, Document A58132. https://www.nsa.gov/news-features/declassified-documents/friedman-documents), who translated those encrypted telegrams from the Japanese For- eign Ministry that were decoded by Friedman’s analysts.

In November 1941, 10 days before the attack, while Hurt and Friedman were visiting a mutual friend in a sanatorium, the cryp- tographer asked the interpreter how he assessed the current state of relations between the United States and Japan from decrypted dis- patches. Hurt replied that the negotiations between Tokyo and Washington seemed to be over. In turn, he asked Friedman what, in his opinion, such an escalation of relations meant. Friedman an- swered very briefly it meant war. Shocked by these words, Hurt emotionally asked the cryptographer, who was much closer to the high authorities, whether the United States was ready for such an escalation of hostility. “I hope so,” Friedman replied…

About what happened to Friedman on the day of the disaster, on Sunday, December 7 1941, his wife Elizebeth told this (Ronald Clark. The Man Who Broke Purple: The Life of Colonel William F. Friedman,

Who Deciphered the Japanese Code in World War II. Boston, MA: Little Brown, 1977):

Friedman himself, hearing the news of the Pearl Harbor attack on the radio, at first found it difficult to believe. For some while, his wife recalls, he could do no more than pace back and forth across the room, muttering to himself over and over again: “But they knew, they knew, they knew.”

But the most striking thing about this dramatic story is that a decade and a half later, William Friedman managed to change his views on what happened literally exactly the opposite. He wrote an analytical work where he very competently, authoritatively and ar- gued began to prove that in fact “they did NOT know.” Because this matter, you see, is far from straightforward..

January 27, 1944

80 years ago, on January 27, 1944, #Leningrad was completely liberated from the Nazi blockade. The almost 900-day siege of the city on the Neva River was a time of the heaviest trials, unparalleled courage and fortitude.

Today we honor the heroes who defended the city and fought for the freedom of the Fatherland. We congratulate veterans, residents of the Siege of Leningrad, distinguished colleagues and all Petersburgers on our memorable day.

Happy holiday and Victory to all!

War crimes of the past, justifies war crimes of today : U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham uses WW2 card to condone Israel's indiscriminate killings— #UNICEF described a ‘war on children’—and the massive Palestinian death toll:

“Tell us how to do it differently. What is too many people dying in #WW2 after Pearl Harbor? Did the American public worry about how many people were dying to destroy #Tokyo and #Berlin? I know it's not the same, but it's similar.”

“Vice President Harris, tell Israel how to destroy #Hamas in a way not to hurt innocent Palestinians... No Republican believes this, by the way, no Republican is telling Israel to change your military tactics.”

Democracy in #Europe: 🇷🇺A Russian citizen has been fined 400 euros by Estonian border guards for displaying a St George ribbon on his car. This was reported by the portal of the Estonian state radio ERR.

According to ERR, the incident took place on 11 November at the Narva-1 border checkpoint. While checking the Russian car, Estonian border guards found a St George's ribbon. They stated that it was banned in Estonia and fined the driver 400 euros, ERR reported. The driver voluntarily handed over the dahlia ribbon and was allowed to enter Estonia, according to the Estonian state radio portal.

This year, the Estonian authorities banned all public Victory Day events using Russian and #Soviet #symbols in the counties of Harjumaa, Lääne-Virumaa and Ida-Virumaa, where most of the country's Russian population lives. Tallinn described the Russian and Soviet flags as "hostile symbols" and justified the decision by saying that they could "provoke enmity".

The St George's Ribbon is one of Russia's national symbols, as well as a symbol of victory over #Nazism in the Great Patriotic War.

Former PM Ehud #Barak mentions #WW2 #Dresden bombing as precedent for Israeli war crimes in #Gaza.

On Oct 19, as a former Prime Minister of #Israel (Labour Party) and defense minister (2007-2013), Ehud Barak was interviewed by Piers Morgan on Talk TV (UK). The firebombing of Dresden on Feb 13-15, 1945, left up to 25,000 dead with no significant military purpose. Inelegant, he also compared Israel's 1,400 slain Jews to “a ten thousand” Britons, revealing a conversion rate of 1 for 7.

Fifth and sixth Love and Anarchy festival days. Managed to make ten out of twelve of the films I had bought tickets for. Kind of annoying to miss the few, but that happens.

Same time next year?

Warning: spoilers!

All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White (2023)

Bambino is a motorcycle courier in Lagos. During a delivery he meets Bawa, a wannabe photographer who takes his picture. The pair develop a complex relationship of mutual interest through their time together with Bambino taking Bawa around Lagos to photograph.

Throughout the film we see the conflict of Bambino realizing he may be gay and rejecting those thoughts multiple times during the film. Female friend Ifeyinwa is caught in the middle, with feelings for Bambino, who ends up using her to test whether he is gay or not. In the end, even at the risk of suffering violence for being gay, Bambino finds what is important to him and accepts his feelings for a man.

A well produced film with lots of pretty photographic shots of Lagos while taking the journey of discovery of ones preferences and learning to accept ones feelings.

And the king said, what a fantastic machine (2023)

Missed this documentary about photography and film due to not feeling to well Saturday night and wanting to sleep a bit late. Boo :(

Lola (2022)

What if there was a machine that allowed you to see future radio and TV broadcasts? Invented by two sisters at the beginning of world war 2, the machine seems like the perfect way to defeat Nazi Germany. Soon after they realize they've erased David Bowie, they end up using the machine to help sink the U-boat fleet, thinking it will provide a great victory, but at the cost of an American civilian liner being sunk. Unfortunately, this causes the US to not enter the war and the eventual invasion of the UK by Nazi forces.

How do you undo all this? You make a documentary about it, air it and hope that you view it in history, thus avoiding the whole mess from happening. Messing with time is easy, right?

Cute very indie scifi film with lots of repurposed historical footage showing Britain under Nazi rule. Unfortunately the footage of cheering crowds would have likely been very true if an invasion had succeeded.
