October 2024, Peaks Island, Maine. Three years ago there was a wild Nor'Easter that swept through the Portland area. A large tree came down leaving this stump that a local sculptor turned into a fabulous octopus. Former stump-now-octopus and its creator are shown in the attached photo.

'Sovereign market,' first of its kind in Maine, opens in Stockholm

Like many farmers markets, food producers and consumers gather for four hours on alternating Saturdays in Stockholm, a small community nestled between Caribou and Van Buren in northern Maine.

But unlike the others, the Stockholm Sovereign Market is unregulated. Aroostook County vendors sell baked goods, produce, dog treats, raw milk, maple syrup, eggs and herd shares — all of which is produced at home.

The market is the first of its kind in Maine and was made possible by a 2021 amendment to the 2017 Maine Food Sovereignty Act, a policy that has only been enacted in two states — Maine and Wyoming — codifying a "right to food" for residents.

If in the future Maine continues to get more and more gentrified, corrupt, and authoritarian, beyond any hope of reversal or repair, I'd try to move to this little blue circle that I drew on this image. Because it seems like it still might be somewhat rural, NH in general is more libertarian than other places, and there certainly would be more of our french speaking ethnicity in that area.

It would be a horrific, dreadful, and very painful decision that would only come after any hope for Maines culture and Mainers autonomy is completely defeated. The fact that things have gotten so bad I have to give this idea any thought fills me with a deep feeling of grief.

There has been a massive loss of electricity all over southern Maine due to a small ice storm. I spent the night reading by candle light. Read some more in the morning and then went outside to chop some chunks of ice out of the driveway to bring inside for water. Filled the toilet with ice. I stuck a solar power panel in my window to charge a USB battery. It's honestly kinda quiet and peaceful. I walked into town and took pretty photos of ice covered trees. I've stopped at cafe and got a coffee and I am watching people move about.

I know here in the south there are all kinds of transplants from away who have no fucking clue how to deal with bad weather and watching them scramble around in a mild panic with their fancy electric cars and iphones when they go 12 hours without electricty is a little pitiful but also funny. The gas station is absolutely mobbed by people with nice cars and nice clothes. How's that million dollar stock portfolio helping you now?! Haha.
