OMG, A HOSPITAL!!!
#Canada #Ontario #Toronto # Mount Sinai Hospital
Respectable Canada was outraged today when, last night, a Palestinian protester climbed the Mount Sinai Hospital and waved a Palestinian flag from a window well.

What hypocrisy! Where was their outrage when real damage was, as it still is, being done to hospitals in Gaza?

Those hospitals have:
- No clean water. No one cares,
- No food for patients. No one cares,
- No medicaments. No one cares,
- No electricity. No one cares,
- No heat. No one cares,

Israel cut off supplies necessary for all of the above to Gaza hospitals, and supplies are still coming in in amounts of 1/10~ 1/100 of the need. Israel is, through UNHCR donor countries, also starving everyone in Gaza who is NOT in a hospital.

Also, most of the hospitals in Gaza have been bombed beyond usefulness. No one cares,
Many of the doctors have been jailed or shot by snipers. No one cares,
Shame on Prime Minister Trudeau, Shame on Premier Doug Ford, Shame on the Canadian media.
As for the leader of the Canadian Official opposition, he should be jailed for his promotion of hate crimes against Palestinians.

"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Doug Ford have spoken out against actions outside Mount Sinai Hospital on Monday night, when a man climbed atop scaffolding and held aloft a Palestinian flag during a pro-Palestinian protest."

‼️‼️Dernières nouvelles : Des révelations explosives ont émergé suggérant que le Forum économique mondial ( #FEM) avait l’intention de nuire avec les #vaccins contre le #COVID-19. (in English too in link)

Toronto beach house by Odami resolves "contradictory" context between waterfront and city

Beach houses Odami

Canadian studio Odami has completed the interiors of a split-level home in Toronto, using light tones that nod to the nearby beaches of Lake Ontario.

The Beaches House was completed for a client living near the city's waterfront, which is lined with long stretches of sandy beaches.

Odami's design for the interiors drew inspiration from typical beach homes, while also offering a contemporary living environment in Canada's largest city.

The Beaches HouseThe Beaches House takes cues from typical beach homes

"Toronto's Beaches neighbourhood presents a peculiar condition within the city," said the studio, led by Aránzazu González Bernardo and Michael Norman Fohring.

"To experience the area is to seamlessly transition between a natural and calm landscape, and an urban and lively atmosphere," they added.

Split-level homeThe split-level home is located in Toronto

Odami's interior palette features typical beach-inspired finishes, such as textured wall panels of varying widths, sand-hued countertops, and plenty of tropical plants throughout the home.

Throughout the living space, light wooden floors and creamy tones offer a tranquil environment.

"Responsible for the interior design, our goal was to create a home which would reflect this contradictory context: a house which would belong as much to the city as it would to a beach far removed from it," Odami explained.

At the centre of the house, a skylight illuminates the steel-and-wood staircase, helping to brighten the interiors and draw visitors upstairs as they move through the home.

"The central staircase, which winds its way up through the split levels of the house, was detailed with thin steel pickets and floating treads, continuing the rhythmic language of the paneling," said the designers.

This calmer palette contrasts some darker materials that were used in circulation spaces, such as a grey stone in the entrance hallway, and a bathroom where the walls and floors are lined with a dark terrazzo.

Odami showerOdami added dark terrazzo elements to the bathroom

"In the bedrooms and bathrooms of the last floor, the sequence comes to rest, as light, repetitive elements give way to moments of stillness, calm, and dense materiality," the studio explained.

Odami was founded in 2017 in Toronto. Other projects from the Canadian studio include a collection of wooden furniture that was crafted from the same dying tree, and a restaurant where the walls are lined with roughly troweled plaster.

Six "resilient" beach huts built on Toronto's beachfront for annual Winter Stations installation

image

Pavilions in the shape of a bee colony and the northern cardinal bird are among the beach huts built on Woodbine Beach in Toronto for this year's annual Winter Stations competition.

The six pavilions erected on the beaches of Toronto and nearby Hamilton each aim to respond to the theme "resilience" – a reference to the trials endured through the pandemic.

"This year, we not only reflect on all the ways people have had to be resilient, but the ways people have channeled this resilience, be it through communities, movements, support networks and more," said Dakota Wares-Tani, an organiser for Winter Stations.

"Over the last eight years, we have managed to draw thousands of people down the beach in the colder months and that's something we're proud of."

Winter Stations was founded by RAW Design, Ferris + Associates and Curio in 2015. The annual contest was launched to give emerging designers a chance to see their work built and displayed to the public.

Previous winners include a team from the University of Waterloo.

Last year, a delayed show was oriented around social distancing, and saw one structure covered in seedlings.

Read on for this year's pavilions:

Cemre Önertürk & Ege Çakır of Turkey designed this series of black boxes in reference to the increased amount of screen time caused by the pandemic.

Each box allows for a few people to look out through "screens" and observe the view, simulating isolation. According to MELT it "presents a spatial atmosphere that brings people together by means of a common vision\image while isolating them physically".

The Cardinal Winter Stations competition The Winter Stations 2022 competition featured a design in Hamilton, Ontario

Wildlife-guard Chair by Mickael Minghetti, with the guidance of Andres Jimenez Monge

Emulating the shape of a northern cardinal, a bird that occupies the lake all year long, a wooden barrier shields the viewing station from the elements.

"The diversity of species taking refuge in the dense urban environment is both remarkable to observe and critical to preserve," said the designers of Wildlife-guard Chair.

Launched in Hamilton, Ontario this installation will move back to Toronto in early March 2021.

"We wanted our design to offer a place of respite for visitors," said the artists. "We also wanted the installation to vibrantly stand out against the lake, sand, and snow."

"We hoped to immerse people in the honey bee world and get them to think about what it means to work together as a community towards a single goal," they added.

S'winter was constructed from beach towels formed into concrete panels.

Embracing the harsh local conditions, "the pavilion's wings embody movement by harnessing snow and mitigating strong winds," said the designers.

Introspection by Christopher Hardy, Tomasz Weinberger, Clement Sung, Jason Wu, Jacob Henriquez, Christopher Law, Anthony Mattacchione, George Wang, Maggie MacPhie and Zoey Chao, led by associate professor Fiona Lim Tung

"Playing with the idea of reflection, we utilizs mirrored walls to cast the visitors as the subjects of our bright red pavilion," said the designers of Introspection.

A trellis roof lets in light and a lifeguard chair stands in the middle of the pavilion.

One Canada by Alex Feenstra, Megan Haralovich, Zhengyang Hua, Noah Tran, Haley White & Connor Winrow, led by assistant professor Afshin Ashari

"Here we symbolise bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples through gathering," said the designers of One Canada.

The installation takes symbolism from the Anishnabae Peoples and gestures towards the contemporary issue of Truth and Reconciliation.

Adjaye Associates designs mass-timber building covered in plants for Toronto's waterfront

image

Architecture studio Adjaye Associates has designed a plant-covered building called Timber House as part of a developement on Toronto's waterfront that will include buildings by Alison Brooks Architects and Henning Larsen.

Set back from the waterfront, the long and narrow Timber House will reportedly be one of the largest residential mass-timber structures in Canada, when it completes.

Set to contain affordable housing units as well as homes for senior citizens, the building's facade will be crisscrossed by narrow beams and have patios for greenery.

It has been announced as part of the Quayside development in Toronto, alongside structures by Alison Brooks Architects and Danish studio Henning Larsen.

Aerial Quayside Adjaye Mass Timber Toronto Adjaye Associate's mass-timber building (top) will be built as part of Toronto's Quayside development (above)

Designed for developers Dream Unlimited and Great Gulf, Quayside will include five towers, urban green space, and cultural buildings dedicated to the local Indigenous nation.

It will occupy 12 acres along the lakefront of the Canadian city.

According to Waterfront Toronto, a governmental organisation leading the development of the site, Quayside will be "the first all-electric, zero-carbon community at this scale".

"We set out to make Quayside the kind of community that meaningfully improves the lives of its residents, neighbours and visitors," said George Zegarac, president of Waterfront Toronto.

Urban forest Quayside An urban forest between the buildings will be a car-free zone

The proposal includes more than 800 units of affordable housing across all of the buildings.

In addition to Adjaye Associate's Timber House, Quayside will include Western Curve, an Alison Brook Architects-designed tower that rises up from slender arches. Sited directly next to Western Curve will be Dutch studio Henning Larsen's tower called The Overstorey.

A community forest by SLA Landscape Architects will occupy the space between the narrow Timber House and the row of towers. This two-acre space will provide "a network of car-free green spaces for residents and visitors".

The design for teh developments cultural buildings has not yet been revealed, but it will be geared towards celebrating the Indigenous community.

"As Host First Nation, we will continue to work to ensure that Quayside will be a place that celebrates Indigenous history and presence and lays the foundation for a good future based on inclusion, respect and reconciliation," said Stacey LaForme, chief of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation.

There will also be a community care hub for healthcare and "offering a range of programs and services to support aging-in-place" as well as infrastructure for recreation for the community.

Previously, the site was going to be developed by Sidewalk Toronto, a project of Sidewalk Labs, the subsidiary of Google.

Those plans included designs by Snøhetta and Heatherwick Studio for a smart, mass-timber neighbourhood. The plans were ultimately scrapped in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Other projects under development in Toronto include Safdie Architect's Orca, a set of housing blocks connected by bridges as well as plans by Diamond Schmitt Architects to transform Ontario Place into a wellness destination.
