So we had a #typhoon on Thursday and it achieved something no other managed to do:
It knocked out the power supply to a number of street lights. This is extraordinary for two reasons: 1) I've never really seen those lights dark. 2) Taipower usually fixes such problems within two hours, even during a typhoon.
The reason for this not having been fixed yet may however have a very simple reason: There is a certain probability that nobody has complained about it.
It's actually a little romantic, you can see the stars better. And it is btw. much darker than in the photos, because the camera is way more sensitive than the human eye, so I have seen people walking by the sea with the camera LEDs activated on their phones. But I haven't heard complaints.

Typhoon?
Yep, typhoon. I don't feel much of the wind around the house, but it's quite different when I walk the few metres to the sea. The actual typhoon only arrived in the evening (bad light, sorry) and when I went out for a few photos then - olala!
We had (have, actually) way more wind than rain this time, which is nice for photos, but I wonder what the storm will take down... (Powerlines, for example. Three times so far...)

A few photos and a video from Kaohsiung's main harbour. My assumption is that the flying containers are empty, otherwise they should withstand the wind a bit better.

We do actually have a fourth day off, which is totally unprecedented, so the mayor had to explain his decision. According to him, about 80k households were without power, some 300k without water (I have both) and many schools were littered with debris. I do wonder though how serious it is, because Taipower goes out even during a typhoon to restore power access.
Anyway, that was a very extraordinary typhoon, but now it's gone. Temperatures dropped to 24C and I actually had to get a blanket for sleeping. Today we should reach 29~30 again...
#Taiwan #typhoon #Krathon
Today shortly after noon we received a cell broadcast warning that #typhoon #Krathon arrived at our location. I assume that the centre was meant, even though it didn't feel like the eye of the storm.
I put on bike jacket and baseball cap to go out for another photo, an umbrella wouldn't have worked well. This typhoon is not normal. It is extraordinarily slow, which is the main problem. You see, wind is mainly a problem at sea. I'm sure a lot of boats get damaged this time, but on land the main problem is rain. The wind will push the rain into any place that is not properly sealed and a lot of water will accumulate. And the longer such large amounts of water rain down, the bigger the problems.
The slowest typhoon I had encountered before was Morakot ("the deadliest typhoon to impact Taiwan in recorded history"), which took two days to pass us. Usually a typhoon will be gone within a few hours. If you're lucky, it will be blue skies afterwards. If not, a week of rain. For Morakot we got two days off, for Krathon it's already three and I think they will have to keep schools closed tomorrow too, which makes four consecutive days off due to a typhoon. I wonder what the final stats will be...

Krathon
This is a very weird typhoon. It should have been here today and perhaps tomorrow. It was announced as possibly the strongest typhoon to make landfall at Kaohsiung. (in history, yes) Work and schools rested today because of that typhoon and...it's not here yet.
Apparently it went on in western direction until this afternoon, then turned north. And judging from its speed, it will only really start to affect us tomorrow afternoon, which would be the second day off work and school. The eye of the typhoon should not reach us before midnight tomorrow.
So I'm looking forward to Thursday... I remember only once having two days off due to a typhoon, which was Morakot in 2009 or 2010. That one was strong but moved very slowly and caused lots of landslides. Do we get three days off this time? This is going to be "fun"...
#Taiwan #typhoon #weather
This is what happens in the wake of #typhoon #Doksuri... Like ours a few days ago this one didn't actually hit #Taiwan. Instead, this one passed near the northern tip of the island. But just like ours it brought wind and quite a bit of rain.
In theory we here in the south should have had constant rain since Thursday, but aside from one shower - nothing so far. In the northern half however... The video mainly shows Nantou county, which is basically in the middle of Taiwan, largely in the mountains. There a gas station has been buried in mud and many roads will require repair. And the rain isn't over yet...
Super typhoon with wind speed of up to 240km/h is hitting Manila!
It seems like the extreme weather phenomenon have moved from the US to Asia. This is the second super typhoon hitting the region in less than a month and this is going to devastate Philippines and it's capital Manila.
It is truly sickening to read the comments of some trolls who make fun of this and joke about Climate Change being a hoax because it didn't hit US this season.

#Nanmadol has intensified to a VIOLENT #typhoon with the central pressure of 910hPa. It seems it will likely maintain its intensity and approach Southern Kyushu.
No typhoons with pressure below 925hPa have made landfall in #Japan since reliable records started in 1951!!!
