Google may soon add a built-in Bluetooth tracker detection feature in Android

Bild/Foto
Bluetooth trackers have quickly become a hot tech commodity. While companies like Tile have offered Bluetooth-powered tags for years, it was Apple’s AirTags that helped these tiny devices achieve mainstream popularity. If you’re on Android, you usually have to download a separate app from the tag manufacturer to monitor, scan and control your device. But it appears that Google may soon let you scan for nearby trackers without downloading a third-party app.

A recent APK teardown from 9to5Google reveals that Google is working on integrating Bluetooth tracker detection capability right into Android. The feature will be part of the Google Play Services, so it should allow Google to bring it to the masses with minimum effort. Within the latest version of the Play Services, 9to5Google has found strings related to “Unfamiliar device alerts” and an “Unfamiliar Tag Detected Notification” for Bluetooth Low Energy tags.

In addition to detecting, it looks like Google will also allow Android users to ring an identified tag. This will be similar to how Apple lets you play a sound on unknown AirTags.

It’s not confirmed yet, so even though it’s appearing inside source code, it is not known when it may go live.

AirGuard – Free and Open Source Android app lets users detect Apple AirTag tracking

Bild/Foto
A small team of researchers at the Darmstadt University in Germany have published a report illustrating how their AirGuard app for Android provides better protection from stealthy AirTag stalking than other apps. In summary, their approach was found to be superior to the iOS system, let alone Apple’s own anti-tracking app for Android.

Apart from serving the tracking warnings faster, AirGuard can also detect trackers placed on cars, which is the most difficult for other solutions to unearth, and the best tracker placement option for malicious actors. It can detect all Find My devices, including self-made ones like the cloned or modified AirTags, as the ultimate stealthy tracking tool.

Apple releases Android app to help find sneaky AirTags | The Verge

Apple has released an app called Tracker Detect, which the company says will let Android users search for AirTags or other Find My-compatible trackers, such as the Chipolo One Spot tracking tag (via CNET). According to the app, it looks for devices that have been separated from their owners — if it finds any, it will let you play a sound on it so you can locate it, and it will give you instructions on how to figure out who the AirTag belongs to and how to disable it if need be.

Apple releases Android app to help find sneaky AirTags, but it is manual scan and can’t actually use AirTags

Apple announced that this app was coming in June, promising that it would allow Android users to find potentially malicious trackers being used without their knowledge. Unlike on iOS, though, it doesn’t seem like this app will constantly do scans in the background and alert you if something is up — it’s purely a manual search. Tracker Detect also doesn’t help you keep track of the AirTags attached to an Apple account, so it’s not helping Android users actually use AirTags.
Good effort in developing such an app for Android, but it does seem to fall short of what the app could have really done.

AirTags and other Bluetooth trackers can find stolen cars, bikes and bags. But what happens when you find the person who took them?

“Everybody’s had something like this stolen from them and wished they had gotten it back, had some agency in that scenario, had something they could do,” said Dan Guido, a technology CEO in Brooklyn who got his electric scooter back using AirTags. “It feels empowering and feels accessible, that’s what’s attractive about it.”

Apple has been careful to never say AirTags can be used to recover stolen property. The marketing for the device is light and wholesome, focusing on situations like lost keys between sofa cushions. The official tagline is “Lose your knack for losing things” and there’s no mention of crime, theft or stealing in any of the ads, webpages or support documents.

But in reality, the company has built a network that is ideal for that exact use case. Every compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac is being silently put to work as a location device without their owners knowing when it happens. The same applies for the Samsung and Tile tracker devices.

The Tile Ultra takes on AirTags with UWB-powered AR tracking, coming early 2022 - Way better to compete through innovation than legal cases

Tile has officially announced its first ultra-wideband (UWB) tracking tag, the Tile Ultra, coming in 2022 and which Tile claims is the first tracking tag from any company to offer UWB support on both Android and iOS.

On the inside, in addition to using Bluetooth radios to leverage Tile’s network of devices to discover the rough location of an object, the Tile Ultra (similar to Apple’s AirTag and Samsung’s SmartTag Plus) can then use its UWB radio to offer more accurate location abilities, even if your tag is behind a shelf or under a couch. The Ultra will also offer an augmented-reality mode to easily directly you straight to your missing tracker.

And you can attach it easily without having to pay for an additional holder. It's really good to see innovation and competition instead of legal cases to block a competitor.
