White Pelicans and Black Skimmers

I've posted several photos of BROWN pelicans, which are growing numerous again after near-extinction...

I posted a photo the other day of a brown pelican in flight,& added it to my Birds web page. I noticed I have zero photos of WHITE pelicans, a different (and rarer) sight for me, and tending to stay further away from people, as here.

On this occasion, a whole flock of black skimmers decided to photo-bomb the scene, happily for me.

Something Different: Gray Catbird

What's most different for me, in encountering a bird I've never seen before, is seeing it in New York's Central Park!
I'm used to pigeons and starlings, robins and jays, plus occasional hawks, but while not uncommon, this was new for me.

Recently transitioning from southern swamps & marshes to urban jungle, this oasis with flowers & birds was a pleasant surprise with the diversity of birds just in this little garden (near Bethesda Fountain and Strawberry Fields).

Called a "catbird" due to its "meow" cry, I've now learned, it is a relative of the mockingbird, & will mimic other birds in addition to cats.

While trying to ID it, I came across this short vid with a sample of a Gray Catbird Singing
I'll keep an ear out in the future, although between people, horses, and music, it's not always so quiet.

Great Egret - Mom & Newborn in Nest

In the midst of nesting season, here is a hatchling and mom in their nest.

Very cute fluff balls, they soon turn into boisterous 'teens' with buzz-cut haircuts looking like a cross between Bart Simpson and Don King.

Here is a video of some juveniles doing what I called 'The Dance of the Great Egret"

After a summery weekend, we got snow flurries today. The garden is waking up everywhere but things still feel odd because there are no nesting #Bluebirds. I have decided to pull the nest today, since there is no sign of any nesting activity. Interestingly enough, a male and a female BB have showed up. There are still Redbreasted #Nuthatches around, and a couple of #Chickadees are showing interest in my other nestbox. #birds #birdsofMastodon #nature #birdwatching #Ostdrossel #birdphotography
