Great Egret - Mom & Newborn in Nest

In the midst of nesting season, here is a hatchling and mom in their nest.

Very cute fluff balls, they soon turn into boisterous 'teens' with buzz-cut haircuts looking like a cross between Bart Simpson and Don King.

Here is a video of some juveniles doing what I called 'The Dance of the Great Egret"

Hey you! Get off my cloud!

That is approximately the conversation here, at the top of the rookery's tree-tops, with a few nice "penthouse" nests.
(Location location!)

A few families are in residence, some have built big nests and more are arriving, some vying for a good spot in the hierarchy - and tree.

A few "winter babies" play and are still in the nest, learning to fly. As some adults are romancing (already in spring plumage) and others are fighting over prime real estate and dominance. Hey! You!

Spring is in the air, it seems, after some cool days.

The egrets are displaying aigrettes (to attract mates), some youngster learning to fly (flapping wings), and a few have built beautiful nests to tempt a partner. Meanwhile, a Great Blue Heron has assumed the throne atop the rookery. This is a first sample, with many to sift through and choose, then post (after camera>computer etc.) .

More to come. Meanwhile, a flock of birds is year-round nesting at my own site: http://www.fenichel.com/birds

Monarch on a 'Cotton Tree'
Thinking warm... From just a few weeks back... What a difference!

These bush/trees are fairly common here along the Gulf Coast of SW FL, but I have no idea what they are. They can be fairly massive and covered with these white flowers which seem like cotton, or dandelion, very delicate.

The butterflies seem to like it very much, whatever it is. (Know the name?)

Snowy Egret

Commonly seen around the edges of the lake at low tide, stirring the water with its bright yellow feet to lure small fish and crustaceans into striking range. Fluffy nuptial plumage in March and April is part of its dramatic mating display. Like the Great Egret they nest and roost in trees on the islands and at times it seems as if the trees are blooming Snowy Egrets.
