Renowned novelist says London board's teaching ban of his book is like 'burying our heads in the sand'

Note that the book is written by a black author and is about slavery:

A prominent Canadian novelist is speaking out after a local high school teacher was ordered to stop teaching one of his award-winning novels in class because of its use of the N-word.

Lawrence Hill said the teacher, who works for the London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB), was told to stop teaching The Book of Negroes and that "under no circumstances am I to teach a novel using" the word.

"Although it may be well intentioned … my concern is that it essentially excludes, completely excludes, Black voices from the curriculum," Hill told CBC Radio's Afternoon Drive on Tuesday.

Every year, on the fourth Thursday in November, Americans consume approximately eighty million pounds of cranberries. While most of our commercial cranberries come from five states (Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington, and Oregon), many other states have cranberries growing in the wild.

In fact, here in Pennsylvania, the name for our local creek, the Perkiomen, originates with the Lenape people who called it the Pakihmomink meaning, “the place where the cranberries grow”. European settlers noticed that the cranberry blossom resembled the head and bill of a crane, and called it “crane berry,” which was later shortened to cranberry. Deriving little nourishment from the soil, the plants depend on air and water for nutrients. Cranberries must grow close to fresh water, though not be submerged for long periods of time. I'm reading #DonQuixote by #MiguelDeCervantes at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it. Before overhearing a little of it in an audiobook not long ago, I realized that it was not a dry #book at all. There are glimpses of what later authors, like #PGWodehouse and even #TerryPratchett took from it and also characters like #InspectorClouseau show traits of the deluded hero of the book. I will reserve further judgement until I get to the end but I'm finding it a pleasure rather than a chore right now.
