Highway Code: 'Dutch reach' rule change to Highway Code welcomed | BBC News

A method known as the "Dutch reach" is to be introduced to the Highway Code in the UK after years of campaigning.
The practice is used widely across Europe and encourages people to open vehicle doors with their opposite hand to avoid injuries to passing cyclists.

I'd like to see the wording in the Highway Code. I imagine it's probably just a recommendation. But considering how many lives could potentially be saved, it can benefit non-European countries, too. Oh, and it doesn't just mean the driver; it means everyone in the car. I saw a mobility-impaired friend knocked to the ground by a taxi driver who parked on the wrong side of the road and then opened his door without looking. Luckily, she didn't have to go to hospital. And there could be bikes, scooters, and pedestrians on both sides of the car.

Huge driving licence change announced which could impact everyone | Daily Record

Driving licences could get a huge overhaul with a major changes expected to be rolled out in the next few years.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is preparing to launch new digital licences - meaning plastic versions could be a thing of the past.
The new technology will soon be available for mobile provisional licences for learners which can be accessed on an app.
It is understood the digital driving licences could then be rolled out to everyone.

It will especially impact those who don't have a smartphone, who don't want a smartphone, who can't afford a smartphone, or who can't use a smartphone.

Android Auto: Here’s everything you need to know about it! Especially if it's illegal to operate a phone whilst driving in your country

For those of you who are unaware, Android Auto is an app that you either need to install or comes pre-installed on your Android (duh) smartphone, which allows you to connect your phone to your car’s entertainment system, either through a cable or wirelessly, to help make things easier while driving. You can make and receive calls, send text messages, reply to them via voice input, use navigation, run third-party apps, etc, all on an interface that’s easy to use and less distracting while driving.

My current car, a Hyundai, has a dash system which is both Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay. It was an important factor in choosing a new car for me, as I can do everything I need to do, without ever touching or holding the phone while driving.

How your driving might reveal early signs of Alzheimer's | BBC News

Everyone's driving changes as they age. But for some people, subtle differences emerge in how they control a vehicle, which scientists say are associated with the early stages of Alzheimer's disease.
In an experiment to find out whether these driving differences can be detected using Global Positioning System-based (GPS) location-tracking devices, a group of over-65s in Washington State in the US agreed to have their driving closely monitored for one year.
What the researchers wanted to find out was whether just studying the driving habits of this group alone could reveal the start of the disease - without the need for invasive or expensive medical procedures.
Using the results of the driving data, they were able to design a model that could forecast someone's likelihood of having preclinical Alzheimer's using merely their age and their GPS driving data. It proved to be 86% accurate.

I was #driving today on a #motorway and there were showers so heavy that everybody's speeds normally in excess of 110 km/h were reduced (voluntarily, not through imposed speed limits) down to less than half that value. Also, in the middle of the afternoon was like driving at night. Once beyond the showers, there was bright sunshine and dry conditions.

DVLA issues urgent warning to every single person with a driving licence in the UK | Manchester Evening News

The DVLA has issued an urgent warning to every single driver in the UK.
Websites have been set up to 'con' drivers out of their money for services which are free on the DVLA website.
The DVLA said websites often spring up also offering to help with V5C vehicle registration certificates or renewing a driving licence from the age of 70.
All of these can be done for free on the DVLA website, but that hasn't stopped some websites trying to make money at drivers' expense.
These secondary websites do genuinely offer the services they advertise - it is just they charge too.
