Last week, #Playstation owners who'd bought (or "bought") Warner TV shows got messages telling them that #Warner had walked away from its deal to sell videos through the Playstation store, and so all the videos they'd paid for were going to be deleted forever. They wouldn't even get refunds (to be clear, refunds would also be #bullshit – when I was a bookseller, I didn't get to break into your house and steal the books I'd sold you, not even if I left some cash on your kitchen table).
So the entertainment industry thinks copying is like stealing but deleting bought licenses from the customer is not stealing because it's normal business? It's a mad world.

Discovery, they’ll be deleting a very long list of Discovery-related reality shows (“Shark Week,” etc.) from the (now-shuttered) PlayStation video store on December 31. This includes deleting the videos of anyone who’s paid for copies. And no, no refunds are planned (as of this writing); basically, the customers’ shows will just be gone, along with their cash.

Don't buy digital content you only get a short license but you own nothing at the end.

NEWAG boobytrapped their trains to try and detect if they've been independently serviced, and to respond to any unauthorized repairs by bricking themselves:\

Poland is part of the EU, meaning that they are required to uphold the provisions of the 2001 EU Copyright Directive, including Article 6, which bans this kind of reverse-engineering. [l] In den USA gibt es ja seit einer Weile einen Streit um das "Right to Repair". Dürfen Firmen mit technischen Maßnahmen verhindern, dass ihre Kunden ihre Geräte reparieren können?
In der Praxis sind solche Maßnahmen typischerweise entweder Nichtverfügbarkeit von spezialisierten Werkzeugen oder Ersatzteilen und/oder DRM-"Sicherheits"-Funktionalitäten, die verhindern, dass man noch funktionierende Ersatzteile aus kaputten Geräten in andere Geräte einbaut.
Die Haupt-Schlachtfelder waren bisher Traktoren, Autos, Smartphones und Laptops. Jetzt kommt ein neues dazu: E-Meter. E-Meter sind die Geräte, mit denen Scientology den Hautwiderstand ihrer Opfer misst, um ihnen dann endlose "Fortbilduingen" zur Befreiung ihrer Thetanen zu verkaufen (Zusammenfassung der Ideologie beim Bayerischen Verfassungsschutz) (Vorsicht: Link geht zum Verfassungsschutz!). Wikipedia hat auch eine Menge von deren "Lore".
Eine der Scientology-Organisationen hat sich jetzt in die Right to Repair-Debatte eingemischt, um eine Ausnahme für E-Meter zu erwirken. Das ist denen offensichtlich unangenehm, wenn Nicht-Scientologen ihre Geräte aufmachen können, und dann sehen, dass die gar keine Thetanen vermessen sondern bloß den Hautwiderstand messen.

Schnittstelle zur Totalkontrolle
Wieder haben wir einen der Big5 - Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft (GAFAM) - in diesem Fall Google dabei erwischt, wie sie das einstmals geplante freie Internet zerstören wollen. Der Weg von Google ist weitgehender als viele bisherige Angriffe. Das Vorhaben läuft unter dem Namen "Web Environment Integrity" (WEI) und beinhaltet eine Art Browserkontrolle.
Dann läuft der Aufruf einer Webseite künftig so ab: Während normalerweise der Browser eine URL, eine Webadresse beim Domain Name Server anfragt, dort die IP Adresse der Webseite bekommt und sich diese dann von dort holt - ohne weitere Zwischenschritte, wird/soll es künftig eine API (Programmierschnittstelle) geben, über die bestimmte Browser-Betriebssystem-Kombinationen zugelassen und andere verboten werden können. Nur wenn diese Einstellungen "als richtig" angesehen werden, erhalte ich die aufgerufene Webseite.
Der Anbieter der Webseite entscheidet ob ich würdig bin
Ich erhalte die aufgerufene Webseite nur, wenn meine Browser-Betriebssystem-Kombination dem entspricht, was der Server, bzw das Unternehmen als eine sinnvolle Nutzung ansieht. Störend könnten z.B. ein AdBlocker, eine Beschränkung von JavaScript, o.ä. sein.
Damit sind eigentlich alle vier Freiheiten des Internets mit einem Schlage abgeschafft. Niemand hat dann künftig - wenn sich Googles Vorschlag durchsetzt - die Möglichkeit Software oder auch einfache Einstellungen auf seinem Gerät zu verändern. Dies geht weit über die meist gescheiterten Versuche von Microsoft und Apple hinaus, die Menschen mit in Chips gegossenem Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) einzuschränken.
Im Chromium Browser ist WEI schon Realität
WEI begann als harmloses Strategiepapier auf Microsoft GitHub , doch nun hat Google es im Eiltempo in seinen Chromium-Browser integriert. Es ist zu befürchten, dass die anderen der Big5 dem folgen werden. Die Möglichkeiten der Überwachung durch WEI sind erschreckend, der Artikel nennt:
- Regierungen werden damit sicherzustellen, dass nur ihre offiziell „genehmigten“ (sprich: mit Backdoor versehenen) Browser auf das Internet zugreifen können,
- Medienunternehmen wie Netflix werden damit ihr Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) perfektionieren,
- der Zugang zu Diensten kann verweigert werden, sobald man einen Browser verwendet, der die Gewinnspanne des Unternehmens der aufgerufenen Webseite schmälern könnte.
Fazit: Wer sich nicht unterordnet, bleibt außen vor. Wehret den Anfängen!

[l] Dieses dystopische "Web Environment Integrity"-DRM-für-Browser-"Feature" von Google neulich hat es schon in Chromium geschafft.
Wer also jetzt noch Chrome oder Chromium oder einen auf Chromium basierenden Browser benutzt, sollte schnell mit den Füßen wählen und zu Firefox gehen. Ansonsten haben wir bald eine Welt, wo dein Browser keine Webseiten mehr anzeigen kann, weil du einen Adblocker installiert hast.

Google’s nightmare “Web Integrity API” wants a DRM gatekeeper for the web
Google’s newest proposed web standard is… DRM? Over the weekend the Internet got wind of this proposal for a "Web Environment Integrity API. " The explainer is authored by four Googlers, including at least one person on Chrome’s “Privacy Sandbox” team, which is responding to the death of tracking cookies by building a user-tracking ad platform right into the browser.
The intro to the Web Integrity API starts out: “Users often depend on websites trusting the client environment they run in. This trust may assume that the client environment is honest about certain aspects of itself, keeps user data and intellectual property secure, and is transparent about whether or not a human is using it.”
The goal of the project is to learn more about the person on the other side of the web browser, ensuring they aren’t a robot and that the browser hasn’t been modified or tampered with in any unapproved ways. The intro says this data would be useful to advertisers to better count ad impressions, stop social network bots, enforce intellectual property rights, stop cheating in web games, and help financial transactions be more secure.
Perhaps the most telling line of the explainer is that it “takes inspiration from existing native attestation signals such as [Apple’s] App Attest and the [Android] Play Integrity API.” Play Integrity (formerly called “SafetyNet”) is an Android API that lets apps find out if your device has been rooted. Root access allows you full control over the device that you purchased, and a lot of app developers don’t like that. So if you root an Android phone and get flagged by the Android Integrity API, several types of apps will just refuse to run. You’ll generally be locked out of banking apps, Google Wallet, online games, Snapchat, and some media apps like Netflix. You could be using root access to cheat at games or phish banking data, but you could also just want root to customize your device, remove crapware, or have a viable backup system. Play Integrity doesn’t care and will lock you out of those apps either way. Google wants the same thing for the web.

DAS ist das Optimierungsziel von Google, wenn sie vom "offenen Internet" reden: Die wollen eine Garantie, dass ihre "Geschäftsmodelle" zulasten der User funktionieren, und dass die sich nicht wehren können. Und nachdem ihr Deppen alle blöde genug wart, deren Browser zu benutzen, können sie das jetzt auch einfach mal so machen.
