The beauty of district heating is that it’s community-led. It’s locally owned so we have control over the production and the pricing and we’re not at the mercy of global events that affect electricity costs

Whereas electricity costs have rocketed to around 30p/kWh, district heating has remained low, currently clocking in at 7.5p/kWh.

JERUSALEM — Twenty trucks carrying medicine, medical supplies and food crossed into #Gaza on Saturday morning from #Egypt, marking the first humanitarian aid to arrive in the territory since an Israeli bombardment campaign began two weeks ago.

As the trucks made their way through the Rafah border, hundreds of people gathered at the Gaza side, hoping to escape the violence that has beset the Palestinian territory. It was unclear whether anyone would be able to leave.

For two weeks since the Gaza-based militant group Hamas launched a wave of deadly attacks on Israel, Israel's retaliatory airstrikes have damaged and destroyed thousands of buildings across Gaza, including homes, schools and U.N.-operated shelters. Israeli military officials say the strikes are targeted at Hamas militants and infrastructure.

An Israeli siege has cut off the flow of #food, #water, #electricity and #fuel to the territory, intensifying a humanitarian crisis.

“Looking at the growing demand for AI service, it’s very likely that energy consumption related to AI will significantly increase in the coming years,” de Vries said, as reported by ScienceDaily.

According to de Vries, training AI is one of the most energy-consuming processes of using this technology. For instance, Hugging Face, an AI company, shared that one of its AI models alone, BigScience Large Open-Science Open-Access Multilingual (BLOOM), needed 433 MWh of electricity for training. That’s enough energy to power about 40 average U.S. households for a year, Euronews reported.

After training, AI goes through an inference phase, where users put in their questions and AI generates responses based on these new prompts. This also requires a lot of energy. De Vries wrote, “Research firm SemiAnalysis suggested that OpenAI required 3,617 of NVIDIA’s HGX A100 servers, with a total of 28,936 graphics processing units (GPUs), to support ChatGPT, implying an energy demand of 564 MWh per day.”

De Vries further warned that AI has limitations and shouldn’t be used for everything, especially considering its privacy concerns and high energy demand. Instead, he said companies should be mindful of how they utilize this technology, only using it when it is really necessary or so beneficial that the costs are outweighed. How the hell can they say this with straight face : The European Commission cannot condemn #Israel's total blockade of the #Gaza Strip, including the cutting off of #water, #electricity and #fuel supplies to all Gazans - and only calls on Tel Aviv to "respect international law", said EC spokesman Eric Mamer, answering questions from European journalists at a briefing in #Brussels.

At the briefing, the Italian journalist recalled that EC chief Ursula von der Leyen last October "accused #Russia of attacks on #Ukraine's infrastructure, describing them as 'war crimes'".
This was followed by a question as to whether the European Commission was prepared to call "the decision to cut off water, electricity and fuel to women and children in the Gaza Strip an act of pure terror".

Mamer replied that von der Leyen's statement was made "in a very specific context and in the situation we are in, where, I would remind you, attacks from Gaza against Israel continue and Israel is in a situation where it is defending itself in an extremely difficult theatre of war. So we can't assess here exactly what Israel needs to do to fight the Hamas terrorists. But we certainly say very clearly that it must respect international law in this fight, and that every effort must be made to ensure the safety of civilians".

#Israel on Monday cut off #electricity, #food, #fuel and #water (F24 'forgot' medicine and medical equipment) from the #Gaza Strip.

The humanitarian situation in #Gaza has deteriorated drastically, but the 2.3 million #Palestinians there have nowhere to flee to.

PS. F24 also failed to mention that Israel bombed the only way out of Gaza. Rafah border to Egypt today. But who am I to correct a respectful world news media /Farhad

Perfectly fine and acceptable : Israeli attacks on hospitals in the #Gaza Strip have led to the collapse of health services, According to the Palestine Red Crescent Society.

Five hospitals have been hit by Israeli strikes and there is a shortage of #medicines, #equipment, #electricity and #fuel for generators due to the total #blockade of the sector.

The #hospitals are working only four hours a day to care for the wounded.

What would you give up to save this #planet?

It's always so easy to demand that the rich should give up their yachts and private jets because you're not affected by it yourself. Those who don't have a car and live in the city demand the abolition of the car without thinking about the people in the countryside. Those who don't use AI and streaming are calling for data centers to be shut down to save power.

But what if it affected us? How much #Internet #bandwidth could we sacrifice if it meant saving the planet?

(Who now writes in the comments I only use text messages for chatting so I don't care about the bandwidth. I would like to congratulate him because he still has not understood what it's all about.)
