Hera asteroid mission goes on trial

image

Video: 00:04:41

At some point, statistically speaking, a large asteroid will impact Earth. Whether that’s tomorrow, in ten years, or a problem for our ancestors, ESA is getting prepared.

As part of the world’s first test of asteroid deflection, ESA’s Hera mission will perform a detailed post-impact survey of Dimorphos – the 160-metre asteroid struck, and successfully deflected, by NASA’s DART spacecraft.

Hera will soon study the aftermath. Launching in October 2024, Hera will turn this grand-scale experiment into a well-understood and hopefully repeatable planetary defence technique.

But before Hera and its two CubeSats fly, they’re rigorously tested at ESA’s ESTEC test centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. From the force and noise of the rocket take-off to the sustained vacuum and temperature extremes of deep space, all aspects of Hera’s functioning are checked before they begin their journey, alone in space.

Hera solar wing deployed

image

Video: 00:00:57

ESA’s Hera asteroid mission for planetary defence seen with one of its two solar wings added, during its continuing test campaign at the ESTEC Test Centre in the Nethelands.

The van-sized spacecraft, left, is powered by a pair of solar array wings, made up of three panels each, provided by Beyond Gravity in Switzerland.

One of these 5-m-long wings was added for Hera’s ‘cold deployment check’ – a manual unfolding process to confirm that the wing fits correctly. Because the solar wings have been designed to operate in weightlessness they were supported by a frame during this test deployment.

Hera is Europe’s contribution to an international planetary defence experiment. Following the DART mission’s impact with the Dimorphos asteroid last year – modifying its orbit and sending a plume of debris thousands of kilometres out into space – Hera will return to Dimorphos to perform a close-up survey of the crater left by DART. The mission will also measure Dimorphos’ mass and make-up, along with that of the larger Didymos asteroid that Dimorphos orbits around.

Inflight Restart without starter power ?

Some channels i watch are a bit of a acquired taste. No need to explain further really. But anyways...

AgentJayZ again kills it with a very interesting video for all tech and physics nerds out there.

Can you restart a turbine, turbojet or turbofan (most likely) engine without any auxiliary power besides onboard batteries and maybe a bit of electricity from the Ram Air Turbine which bigger jets use in case of a emergency?

**spoilers start here**

What does that mean? Imagine, you're in a jet somehow. And not only both engines quit, but you're actually unable to start the APU (Auxillary Power Unit, it's own tiny turbine-generator). So you got no real options left but use the windmilling of your turbine to get it up to speeds where you can inject fuel and actually start it.

Tl;dr: This scenario is _EXTREMELY_ unlikely, just on the grounds that usually no engine quits for no reason.. But if you are there.

Well, it's not good ..... but _might_ just be possible.... Most probably killing the engine along the way. (You will necessarily overheat it in the process and shorten it's lifetime massively. ;))

O.k. sorry, enough technobabble.
