Competition: win a recycled plastic Fiber Chair from Muuto

image

A set of Muuto Fiber side chairs with grey bases surround an oak table

For our latest competition, we've teamed up with Danish furniture brand Muuto to offer readers the chance to win a Fiber Chair in a colour and base of their choice.

Originally launched in 2014, Muuto has released a recycled plastic version of its Fiber Chair as part of a drive to create more sustainable products using reused raw materials.

In celebration of the new generation of Muuto chairs, one lucky Dezeen reader will win a Fiber Armchair or Side Chair in their choice of base and colour.

Three Muuto Fiber Chairs in dusty green, black ochre and woodMuuto has launched a recycled plastic version of its Fiber Chair

Designed by Copenhagen studio Iskos-Berlin, the Fiber Chair was conceived as a "modern yet timeless" take on a classic shell chair.

"One of the most difficult and noble disciplines of design is to create simple, well-functioning, and almost ordinary objects that nevertheless have a strong identity," said Iskos-Berlin. "We designed the Fiber Chair to do just that through a clear sculptural language that refuses to compromise on comfort."

The shell of the Fiber chair is made from a composite of plastic and wood fibres, which gives it a distinct surface with a soft, matte touch.

80 per cent of the plastic used is recycled from post-industrial waste from the manufacturing of eyewear.

A photograph of the Muuto chairsThe shell of the Fiber Chair is made from a composite of plastic and FSC-certified wood fibers

"It is a chair stripped of all unnecessary layers," the studio explained. "The iconic form marries soft, embracing curves with an innovative wood fibre composite, giving the Fiber Chair a unique expression and tactile texture."

The chair is available in Muuto's signature colours, including Black, Dusty Green, Grey, Ochre and White. Customers can choose from an oak, metal, or swivel base.

A group of Muuto Fiber Chairs in grey surround an oak veneer table in a minimalist interior The chair is available in a range of colours including Dusty Green

Other products by Muuto include the solid oak top 70/70 table by Swedish architecture and design studio TAF, which balances "simple Scandinavian aesthetics" with the warmth of layered wood, and the Outline Daybed by Norwegian studio Anderssen & Voll, which is distinguished by its "understated yet characterful proportions".

The brand is also known for its adaptable workplace products, including Danish designer Thomas Bentzen's Linear System Series, a range of tables, lighting, screens, and trays that have been designed to fit as comfortably in an office as they do a hospitality venue.

Founded in 2006, Muuto is a Danish design company "rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition characterised by enduring aesthetics, functionality, craftsmanship and an honest expression".

With showrooms across the globe, the brand aims to deliver new perspectives on Scandinavian design through its use of diverse materials and techniques.

Competition closes on 10 April. Terms and conditions apply. One reader will win a Muuto unupholstered Fiber Armchair or Side Chair in their choice of colour and base. The winner will be selected at random and notified by email. This competition is open to readers in Europe only.

Michael Graves Design creates "visually appealing" medical furniture for CVS

image

A chair by Michael Graves next to a bed

American studio Michael Graves Design has created a collection of home healthcare products for a major US pharmacy that is meant to "enhance people's lives with moments of joy".

The collection, called CVS Health by Michael Graves Design, features six items that fall into one of two categories – mobility or bath safety. The products include a shower chair designed to look like real furniture and a foldable walker.

CVS Health chair by Michael GravesCVS Health by Michael Graves Design is a range of accessible products for the home

Michael Graves Design, which was founded by AIA Gold Medal-winning architect Michael Graves, began the design process with a research phase that included interviews and in-house observations with users, caregivers and clinicians.

That research informed the design of the final products, which are intended to be both attractive and highly functional – a rarity in the world of home medical equipment.

Comfort Commode chairMichael Graves Design created the collection for the popular US pharmacy chain

"We are reinventing the home healthcare category with products that are research-insight driven, visually appealing, full of character and purpose, and that enhance people's lives with moments of joy," said the New Jersey-based studio.

The products help elevate the "quality and dignity that consumers should expect", said design principal Donald Strum.

"We are thrilled by the collaboration and the powerful change it will bring to disabled people, elders and the people who provide care for all of us."

A chair in a white bathroomThe range can be divided into mobility and bath safety products

Among the bathroom products is a shower chair that converts to a stool. It features a rustproof aluminum frame, a contoured seat that wicks away water, a removable backrest, and a built-in holder for a shower sprayer.

The Convertible Shower Chair & Stool is designed to mimic "actual furniture", and to blend with contemporary bathroom finishes and materials.

An accessible chair next to a showerThe Convertible Shower Chair & Stool has a rust-proof frame

The bath line also includes a 3-in-1 Comfort Commode that is suitable for a bedroom, living room or bathroom. It includes swing-away armrests and an extra-wide lid that enables the piece to be used as a chair.

Also in the bath line is the Raised Toilet Seat with a quick-locking mechanism that enables it to be connected and removed without the use of tools.

For the mobility line, the team conceived the Easy Fold Travel Walker. This has two wheels and a grip that angles down toward the front, helping improve the user's posture and wrist comfort. Other features include integrated brakes and easy height adjustment, along with a foldable design.

"Its unique centre column chassis looks cool, and also facilitates easier fold, better balanced carry and easier storage," the team said.

The other mobility aids are the C Grip Cane, which has a crescent-shaped handle, and the Folding Cane, which is easy to store and has magnets that keep it securely folded up.

In addition to being lightweight and height adjustable, both canes feature square-shaped shafts made of aluminium and two interchangeable feet. They are offered in several colours.

The healthcare products align with the spirit of Michael Graves Design, which was founded in 1964 by Graves, who died in 2015 at the age of 80.

In addition to noted architectural works such as Oregon's Portland Building, Graves designed mass consumer products for companies such as Alessi, Target and JC Penney.

A walking stickThe two canes in the collection are made with aluminium shafts

After Graves became paralysed in 2003 due to an infection, he adapted his Princeton, New Jersey, home for life in a wheelchair.

Graves became an advocate for accessible design and created related products, such wheelchairs and hospital furnishings. His aim was to improve healthcare and the caregiving experience through design.

A red walking stickThey both come in a range of colours

"Michael became a passionate voice among the disabled and used the power of design to improve healthcare experiences for patients, families and clinicians," his firm said.

CVS – one of the top American pharmacies – said it selected Michael Graves Design because it was a "design for all" pioneer that was "uniquely qualified to design transformative home healthcare products".

Other medical products include Flow X by Pearson Lloyd, a stairlift for the home that is meant to be aesthetically appealing, and a lightweight wheelchair by Phoenix Instinct that uses smart technology to improve its functionality.

Inferences/Inferencias exhibition aims to "arouse curiosity towards contemporary design"

image

Objects have an orange finish at the exhibition

Barcelona-based gallery Il-lacions has opened an exhibition at Madrid Design Festival that features over 70 furnishings, sculptures and design pieces in an effort to explore contemporary design.

The theme of the exhibition is centred around its name, Inferences/Inferencias, which Il-lacions described as "the action and effect of inferring one thing from another, a link between ideas, the consequence of something."

Objects and furniture at Inferences/Inferencias are displayed on a podiumInferences/Inferencias is a group exhibition that was exhibited as part of Madrid Design Festival

The gallery selected one piece of work by each of the artists it represents, who were then asked to become co-curators of the exhibition and invite a designer, maker or artist whom they admired to also exhibit a piece of work.

The resulting 74 sculptures and furniture pieces displayed in the exhibition were arranged on and around a large angular display table that was finished to mimic concrete.

Wooden side table is photographed beside glass vessels at Inferences/InferenciasA wooden stool by Sanna Völker is a tribute to architect Louis Kahn

All of the works in the show focus on one or more topics specified by the gallery, such as research and development in new materials, object functionality, sustainability and production processes.

"We would like to arouse curiosity towards contemporary design, visitors can read about the pieces and even touch them with care," Il-lacions told Dezeen. "We would like them to learn about materials, functionality and ingenuity in design."

A light installation is sprawled across a wooden sheet at Inferences/InferenciasA light installation titled Ignoring Helena by Michael Roschach is placed nearby Burned Ode Chair by Sizar Alexis

"We hope people understand the amount of work behind each piece, there’s a lot of research and experimentation," the gallery said.

"These are inspirational objects that contribute to giving interiors something more than just a function, they are emotional and unique," it added.

"We would like to stimulate new views on design and thinking to shape contemporary values, and together with the creators to generate a cultural heritage that reflects this time and this place," the gallery said.

Among the pieces on display is Joel Blanco's Shiba-Inu dog sculpture with a built-in ASIC cryptocurrency miner. This uses the exhibition space's electricity to mine Dogecoin and is a commentary on financial freedom and an anarcho-capitalist future, according to the designer.

Also exhibited is a Jesmonite and fibreglass chair by Six N. Five, embedded with an authentication chip built on Blockchain technology that allows the piece to be minted as an NFT.

Design exhibition in MadridObjects, fixtures and furnishings were hung from walls and placed throughout the gallery space

A number of the works on show also feature reused and recycled materials.

"Josep Vila Capdevila is reusing pieces from old factories (fluorescents, cables, a pulley) and he mixes it with noble materials such as marble to create the Suspended Lamp exhibited – he classifies this piece as 'Random Luxury'," the gallery said.

"The 'Aluminium Block' side table by Toni Pallejà is reinterpreting industrial materials, transforming them into elements that convey luxury and fashion."

Collection of pieces are displayed across different heightsThe exhibition features 74 objects, furnishings and sculptures that discuss contemporary design

Il-lacions was founded in 2011 by Xavier Franquesa. Inferences/Inferencias forms part of the fifth edition of Madrid Design Festival, a month-long event that transforms the city into a design hub.

Also exhibited at this year's edition is a light installation by Antoni Arola that forms architecture from light. Previous editions saw Jorge Penadés invite 14 designers to showcase "bold ideas in small boxes".

Dezeen Showroom: glass artist Simon Klenell and carpenter Kristoffer Sundin aimed to combine their preferred materials to striking effect when designing the Big Sur Low coffee table for Fogia.

Described by Fogia as "confident and elegant", the Big Sur Low table has a thin tinted glass top sitting on smooth wooden legs.

The furniture piece is named after the Big Sur area of California, which is characterised by the meeting of rocky cliffs and blue ocean.

Similarly, the table combines wood and glass to create an intriguing interplay of colours and textures, while its transparent top creates a sense of lightness that belies its generous size.

"The beauty of Big Sur Low is the exciting contrast of glass meeting wood, and how the transparency of the glass allows the table to come alive by its surroundings," said Klenell and Sundin.

Big Sur Low's glass top is available in a choice of four colours – transparent, green, brown or anthracite. The legs come in Fogia's standard oak finishes of oiled, lacquered, light, wenge, smoked oak, black, grey, white, dark blue and dark green.

Silent Room acoustic pod by Narbutas

Dezeen Showroom: workplace furniture brand Narbutas has added new customisation options to its Silent Room acoustic pods, offering a glass back wall for a transparent and light-filled office environment.

Narbutas' Silent Room acoustic pods create "a room within a room" in open workspaces, giving employees a private space to make calls, hold small meetings or focus on complex tasks.

Silent Room acoustic pod by NarbutasA new customisation option for Narbutas' Silent Room pods allows for transparent glass walls on both sides

The new version of the pod has a transparent glass back-wall insert instead of the classic upholstered exterior back panel, which is a good option for settings where it would be undesirable to block light.

Narbutas suggests this option for the middle of open-plan workplaces or for areas that are close to windows or glass partitions.

Silent Room acoustic pod by NarbutasThe pods allow a quiet, private space for focused work or calls

As with all Silent Room variations, the pod comfortably fits up to four people and is equipped with USB type A and C connectors for charging devices.

Dezeen Showroom: designer Alexander Lervik has expanded his Arholma outdoor furniture collection for Skargaarden, adding additional pieces that aim to be both minimalistic and distinctive.

Lervik first developed the design with a cafe chair, launched in 2021, for which he aimed to be as minimalistic as possible while creating something with a distinctive character.

"I found an identity in the form that I later infused throughout the whole collection so that it is clear that the pieces belong together," said Alexander Lervik.

The Arholma collection is made of galvanised powder-coated aluminium and durable outdoor fabrics. Skargaarden recommends it for both public settings and private terraces.

Muuto relaunches Fiber Chair with recycled plastic shell

Fiber Chair for Muuto

Promotion: Danish furniture brand Muuto has released a recycled plastic version of its Fiber Chair designed by Copenhagen studio Iskos-Berlin.

Muuto originally launched the chair in 2014, and its reintroduction is part of a drive to create more sustainable products using reused raw materials.

An picture of the recycled plastic Fiber Chair for MuutoMuuto has launched a recycled plastic version of its Fiber Chair

"The Fiber Chair is one of our most popular designs, a modern yet timeless chair," said Muuto.

"Taking the leap from virgin to recycled plastic in its production feels like an ambitious starting point in becoming more circular in our consumption of raw material."

Recycled plastic version of its Fiber Chair in green, black and a peach colourThe shell chair is now made from a combination of recycled plastic of which 80 per cent is recycled

Designed by Iskos-Berlin, the Fiber Chair was created as a modern take on a classic archetypal shell chair.

"One of the most difficult and noble disciplines of design is to create simple, well-functioning, and almost ordinary objects that nevertheless have a strong identity," said Iskos and Berlin.

Shell chairs in green and blackThe recycled plastic shell is mixed with FSC certified wood fibres to create a matt and tactile surface

"We designed the Fiber Chair to do just that through a clear sculptural language that refuses to compromise on comfort," it continued.

"It is a chair stripped of all unnecessary layers. The iconic form marries soft, embracing curves with an innovative wood fiber composite, giving the Fiber Chair a unique expression and tactile texture."

A photograph of grey office chairs around a tableThe wood fibres are visible from close up

The chair's shell is made from a composite of plastic and wood fibres, which gives it a matt finish and distinct appearance.

80 per cent of the plastic used is recycled from post-industrial waste from the manufacturing of glasses.

The blend of recycled plastic and wood fibres intends to give the chair a unique look with "a fine aesthetic detail making the design come alive with tactility".

Muuto's relaunched chair is available in the exact same colour range as the original chair, including Black, Dusty Green, Grey, Ochre and White with options of oak, metal and swivel bases.

"We at Muuto continuously question our approach and methods to arrive at new perspectives on Scandinavian design," said Muuto.

"The new version of the Fiber Chair in recycled plastic is the result of a challenge we posed to ourselves – to reimagine the way we work with recycled plastic."

"To create something strong and durable from recycled materials that could match our distinctive color palette and endure daily wear and tear. This complex yet thrilling challenge led us into novel fields of research, inspiring us to develop a new composite material in the process."

**Dezeen Showroom: **Austrian brand TYP has reissued a trio of chairs by seminal Bauhaus furniture designer Erich Dieckmann and adapted them for modern use.

The Dieckmann by TYP collection is centred on D1, a wooden chair with a cubic frame and curved backrest designed to fit into a variety of different interiors.

It also includes two variations on this design – a version with armrests called D1+ and one with slanted hind legs and a simplified backrest called D2.

Originally created by Dieckmann around 1930, the seating designs were early examples of Typenmöbel, meaning furniture optimised for standardised mass production.

All their components were carefully measured and fabricated to fit the human body, in a bid to guarantee comfort despite their wooden frames.

TYP has brought the Bauhaus chairs up to date by reengineering their joints and adapting their sizes for modern users, all while preserving their original proportions.

"Each piece is simple yet functional, stringently geometric yet adaptable to the human posture," said TYP. "What applies to all is easy to produce and fairly priced products that don’t compromise quality."

Black D1+ chair by TYPThe chairs can be finished in three different kinds of wood and six different colours

The chairs are available in hardwearing Robinia wood for use outdoors and in oak or ash wood for interior purposes.

The ash can also be dyed in six different colours including black, white, baby blue and olive green. The wooden seats can be left plain, swapped out for wickerwork or upholstered in a range of textiles and leathers.
