Maria Innocentia Hummel (born Berta Hummel; 21 May 1909 – 6 November 1946) was a German Franciscan sister and artist. She is noted for her paintings which were the basis for Hummel figurines.

Dear John and Daughter ~ You wrote that you didn't know much about your German heritage. This is what I've meant to send to you for many months. I haven't done any extensive research on your family name. Many times a person's last name has nothing to do with their actual DNA blood-line genealogy. I was stopped in my tracks when I saw this photograph. The eyes, the smile, the wonderful expression on her face. I get chills from head to toe just looking at her. It is your eyes, your smile and your expression. So. That is the first clue. You are a true Hummel, and one may proceed from there. ('Tis emotional for me.)

Gramps is free and open source software to research, organise and share your family tree

Bild/Foto
Every person has their own story but they are also part of a collective family history. Gramps gives you the ability to record the many details of an individual’s life as well as the complex relationships between various people, places and events.

A summary of the active person’s parents, siblings, spouses and children is shown, which is a great way to graphically show children what their relationship is to others in the family.

The software is available for Linux, Windows and macOS, and works with standard GEDCOM genealogy files. If you’re looking to self-host a web version of your family tree, then Webtrees is worth looking at.

MyHeritage cooks up creepy LiveStory AI tool that makes your dead ancestors speak

Bild/Foto
The system’s called LiveStory, and starts by asking for an upload of an ancestor’s photo, before using deep learning tech the company licensed from D-ID to fashion a full-blown mini-documentary including audio and high-resolution video. Faces are animated and synced up with the images to — ideally — tell part of your family’s story.

MyHeritage admits in its FAQ for LiveStory that some may find the feature “creepy and dislike it,” but claims others think it’s downright magical. LiveStory is an evolution of DeepNostalgia, an AI-based family photo animation tool that MyHeritage introduced a year ago to a similar mix of awed and decidedly haunted reactions. I did a post about DeepNostalgia in Feb 2021.

LiveStory requires a user account and if you have a full subscription to MyHeritage ($299 a year) there are no limits on how many LiveStories you can make. Videos you make are yours to keep.
