World Court orders Israel to halt assault on Gaza's #Rafah

Judges at the top United Nations court ordered Israel on Friday to immediately halt its military assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, in a landmark emergency ruling in South Africa's case accusing Israel of genocide.
While the International Court of Justice, or World Court, has no means to enforce its orders, the case was a stark sign of Israel's global isolation over its campaign in Gaza, particularly since it began its offensive against Rafah this month against the pleas of its closest ally the United States.

The Government of Reconciliation and National Unity wishes to express its recognition of the Court’s decision to remind all states of their international obligations with respect to the transfer of arms to Israel, including Germany. This reaffirms that no state can ignore its obligations with respect to the risk of genocide in Gaza and other violations of international law.

Finally, the Court rejected Germany’s request to dismiss the case for lack of jurisdiction, and will therefore continue with the process involving a review of Germany’s conduct before it reduced its material support to Israel, among other points.

Seven World Central Kitchen aid workers have been killed in Gaza in an Israeli air strike.

On April 8 and 9, the International Court of Justice ( #ICJ) will once again hold hearings on the Israeli genocide in #Gaza.

This time the judges in The Hague will be listening to arguments in the case brought by Nicaragua against #Germany.

The Central American nation accuses #Berlin of violating its obligations under the 1948 #Genocide Convention and other “intransgressible principles of international humanitarian law,” including the Fourth Geneva Convention

#Nicaragua argues that “each and every” party to the Genocide Convention has a duty “to do everything possible to prevent the commission of genocide” and that since October 2023 there has been “a recognized risk of genocide against the Palestinian people, directed first of all against the population of the #Gaza Strip.”

By sending vast quantities of military equipment to Israel and defunding #UNRWA, the #UN agency that provides essential humanitarian support to the population of Gaza, Nicaragua charges that “Germany is facilitating the commission of genocide and, in any case has failed in its obligation to do everything possible to prevent the commission of genocide.”

According to The Washington Post, the #Biden administration will authorize the transfer of 2,000-pound bombs and other weapons to Israel despite a growing divide with the Israeli government.

The new arms packages will include over 1,800 MK84 2,000-pound bombs and 500 MK82 500-pound bombs, as reported by #Pentagon and State Department officials.

The 2,000-pound bombs have been associated with Israeli massacres of targeting and destroying civilian blocks in #Gaza, killing thousands of Palestinian women and children. The State Department has also approved the transfer of 25 F-35A fighter jets and engines, valued at approximately $2.5 billion, according to U.S. officials.

Israel must ensure immediate, unhindered humanitarian aid, including food, water, electricity, fuel, shelter, clothing, hygiene, and medical care with #UN cooperation.

This also includes opening land crossing points into Gaza for as long as necessary.
