An Edinburgh academic has accused #Starling bank’s fraud team of behaving like officers in a police state after they repeatedly refused to allow him to send a €15,000 (£12,800) payment to a friend in Austria, then froze his account when he complained about their “absurd demands”.
When he told the #bank that he considered its demands a gross invasion of both his and his friend’s #privacy (and likely data rules) and totally disproportionate in the circumstances, he says it still refused to transfer the money. The staff could have told him the payment was at his own risk, but wouldn’t.
The final indignity came when he said he was so fed up with his treatment that he wished to close his account: the bank announced it had shut him out of it.

Russia has laundered $2.5 billion of African gold since February 2022
The Kremlin has laundered $2.5 billion of African gold since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to a report by an international group of researchers and human rights activists published on Dec. 12.
Russia's illicit activities and ties to authoritarian regimes in Africa have been under the public eye for years. Russian mercenaries on the continent, whose operations help to fill Moscow's coffers, have been repeatedly accused of human rights abuses against local populations.
The Blood Gold Report reveals that Russia-backed mercenaries, including the Wagner Company, support authoritarian regimes and destabilization in Africa as part of resource extraction schemes that bring Russia more than $100 million per month.
The research focused on Wagner's operations in three African countries, each illustrating a different method of resource extraction.

Get this! The source of funds for the winning bid in Melania Trump’s first NFT auction apparently came from Melania's own wallet. Blockchain transactions show the cryptocurrency used came from a wallet that belongs to the same entity that originally listed the project for sale.
This process, known as wash trading, allows someone to simultaneously buy and sell the same asset and — in some cases — artificially raise its price. Wash trading is prohibited in conventional securities and futures, but NFTs (like Melania’s) are traded in an unregulated market.
