My Asus eeePC still rocks in 2024 (with MX Linux)
Long long ago, in a galaxy far ... Nah. Back in 2010, I got myself a netbook. It was an Asus eeePC thing, small, robust, lovely, and reasonably priced. Fast forward a good decade, I've used it everywhere. Inside and outside, in rough outdoor conditions, and it's survived a dozen business trips with pride. Practical use, too, including mail, browsing, music, videos, writing books, everything you can imagine.
Over the years, though, its tiny, super-ancient processor started lagging behind the (mostly unnecessary) growth in computing demands for ordinary things. My last endeavor with this box was around 2019. I installed MX Linux 18 on it, and this fine, frugal distro gave it a fresh breath of life and relevance. I wasn't sure how much longer the system would receive updates, and what to do once that episode ended. Well, as it turns out, just when I thought it might be time to retire the eeePC, it snapped its red clamshell cover and shouted: I ain't dead yet. Well, let's talk about it, shall we?
Debian is going to drop support for all 32 bit computers in next release!
https://www.theregister.com/2023/12/19/debian_to_drop_x86_32/
Debian preps ground to drop 32-bit x86 as separate edition
Bad news for several downstream distros, but good news for NetBSDAfter a recent meetup in Cambridge, Debian developers are discussing how to start gradually dropping 32-bit x86 support.
One immediately visible result is a message entitled "Bits from the Release Team" on the debian-devel-announce mailing list, with significant news: The end of the line for Debian as a 32-bit distro is approaching. Note, though, this doesn't mean that 32-bit support is going away altogether. Not yet anyway.
The news is in a section titled "A future for the i386 architecture":
Insofar as they still do, we anticipate that the kernel, d-i and images teams will cease to support i386 in the near future.
So, this really sucks for a lot of other people and distros. Like it or not there's shitloads of 32 bit hardware around the planet. A lot of it is currently running! Sadly most of it is running Windows, still. Which is bad because it's so unsafe to keep old versions of Windows touching the internet. But much of it is kept both running and safe by having it run Debian, or a 32 bit distro based on Debian. For any old hardware most peoples go-to distro is Debian. Nobody else is supporting old hardware like Debian is. Plus if someone want's to make their own spin on a distro for old hardware they pretty much always used Debian as a base for it, so there's a lot of distros out there that are gonna die because of this. Like for example #antix #mxlinux #bunsenlabs #slax #peppermintos so this sucks bad.
MX Linux 23.2 »Libretto« bringt PipeWire 1.0

Only recently I realised that even within my win11 I can create an image (or even clone it) of my MXLinux drive using my Macrium Reflect... I do dual booting just for fun...
The job just finished, and it took only 2:25min to compress the 22.6 GB to 7.8 GB... thankful for that.
Now, if there's a problem with MX I can restore the whole drive within a few minutes. YAY!
The relating article on Macrium's homepage is at https://u.to/dhgKHQ

While I didn't write a review of MX Linux, Jeff Siegel reviewed the distribution back in November. He and I agree on our impressions of this Debian-based project: "That MX 21, codenamed Wildflower, is such a joy to use speaks volumes about Linux and its potential on the desktop, the dedication of its users, and why so many of us never want to boot a Big Tech operating system ever again. It's not so much that MX 21 just works, but that its developers have made a serious effort to identify what would make it work even better."
Spent much of the weekend trying to get my system to work correctly. I decided to add a second GPU as a display card, and the process of getting it up and running was a wild one. I now now a lot more about the X Window System, and have taken a step in to using a window manager instead of a Desktop Environment, since the latter would not play nice with my set up.

Haven't done a "desktop of the month" screenshot in a while, so why not. Still: #mxlinux , current version, running mostly-default #xfce desktop. Only deviation again is #qogir theme (because I simply like it). Seen: Terminal, file manager, #midori browser with (phew...) pinafora.social connected to #loma.ml and displaying the @inoffiziell|Esa profile. Just for the sake of it.
