Thursday, Jan. 4: #Quadrantids meteor shower peak

Named for a now-defunct #constellation called the Mural Quadrant, the Quadrantids meteor shower runs from Dec. 26 to Jan. 16 every year. Quadrantids meteors always radiate from a point in the northeastern sky below the tip of the Big Dipper's handle. Prime viewing is before dawn.

It looks like a portal.it looks like a "stargate", or a portal. Notice only one side is emitting light. The other side of the "ring"/"portal" is dark, as if it's some kind of doorway.... Is the Hadron Collider going to open a portal into our universe that will let outwardly entities in?

For the third day in a row, #Arctic #sky watchers are reporting a widespread outbreak of #polar #stratospheric #clouds. "The colors are spectacular," says Ramune Sapailaite, who photographed the display over Gran, #Norway:

"The clouds were visible in the sky all day, but the #colors really exploded just before #sunset," says Sapailaite. "I took these pictures using my cellphone."

Widely considered to be the most beautiful clouds on Earth, polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) are rare. Earth's stratosphere is very dry and, normally, it has no clouds at all. PSCs form when the temperature in the Arctic stratosphere drops to a staggeringly-low -85 C. Then, and only then, can widely-spaced water molecules begin to coalesce into tiny ice crystals. High-altitude sunlight shining through the crystals creates intense iridescent colors that rival auroras.

During a typical Arctic winter, PSCs appear no more than a handful of times, and the first sightings usually come in January. This week's apparition marks an early start, and may herald many more PSCs to come.

#First Ever #Photo of a #Snow #Leopard Under a #Starry #Sky
It takes a special kind of patience to search for a ghost. It is unlikely you will find one, but doubt means quitting, so you keep looking.

This is the art of tracking snow leopards. Morup Namgail learned it early. He was 5 when he first saw one in his remote home village of Uley in Ladakh, India. The area teems with wildlife – heaven for aspiring photographers like Morup and his brother Stanzin. These large cats, locally referred to as shan, were immortalised in the BBC series Planet Earth II thanks in large part to their father, Norboo, who tracked them for the crew.

Ladakh was just becoming famous for sightings – then the pandemic shut everything down. That is when the brothers vowed to photograph something no one had before: a snow leopard under a starry night sky. They hoped the image would highlight the beauty of this mountainous region and its apex predator, thereby spurring efforts to protect both. This is a place warming at double the global rate, threatening the landscape and its wildlife. If the outside world could only see what was at stake, the brothers believed it would influence the government to act.

They spent months blanketing the area with cameras. But halfway through the project, Stanzin died of a heart condition. Hard as it was, Morup pressed on alone … and succeeded.

In this month’s Night #Sky #News we’re chatting about the Chandrayaan-3 mission to the South Pole of the Moon, evidence of wet-dry cycle of water on early Mars which gives the right conditions to form the molecules for life, and the latest evidence for JWST which has added fire to the “crisis in cosmology” (aka the Hubble Tension). Plus what you should look out for in the night sky in the next month.
