Self-cannibalization of AI

It is highly interesting to see how certain topics are hyped in the age of think tanks and agency reports in order to make money. This can be observed in all areas, to the extent that weak people want to go to war with a cheer or pay seven times as much for the same product just because the packaging is green. In Germany, we also say “the same in green” when we want to sell people something they already have.

If you look at the major US venture capitalists, they clearly and honestly explain (it's about money) that #Blockchain, #Crypto and Eco are now over. Nobody believes it anymore. And now all forms of #AI, #AI and neural #networks are being invested in. But this #hype is also completely crazy, completely pointless and ultimately a paper tiger. Let's just hope that not so many children die this time.

The way neural networks are being unleashed on the disinterested public is completely superficial and pure marketing. After a year of hype, everyone recognizes an AI-generated image immediately. AI-generated texts are infantile and simply wrong in terms of content. You can't help but get the impression that it's all just hot air and that this technology, if it ever grows up at all, is currently in the stage of an unborn embryo that has been dragged out of the womb.

And like all premature babies, it will probably die. And that is primarily due to the training data that such a neural network needs. And they are cannibalizing each other. A good example of AI use is DeepL. They obviously use AI only as a tool and create wonderful natural translations from the writings and books of mankind.

But the hyped-up AIs, chatbots, image generators and music AIs have to resort to information from the uncensored internet. As everyone knows, this is a source that is not at all reliable, in which 99% of the content is made up and invented and (this will be the death knell for this type of AI) is now even generated by AI itself.

I call this self-cannibalization of AI. It is, in a sense, unstoppable. Neural networks feed themselves over and over again with their own data and structures. It's like incest in a rapidly reproducing population. It will degenerate and eventually die.

The large companies and conglomerates that are now betting on AI are in great danger of getting caught in a destructive downward spiral.

Or have you recently done a #Google search? And were you satisfied? Well then.

" #Revolution" - The #VideoToaster #Demo #Tape ( #NewTek) - #Amiga

The 1990 video that started it all. Made you feel like you could do #video #effects like the big #television #networks. No big deal these days, but back then the barriers to entry for doing #professional video were huge.

This video comes from the #VHS tape we ordered through the mail back in 1990, just to watch all the #cool #computer #animation, and then dream about owning something like this someday.

And just like these guys did, we've used cutting edge #visual #effects #technology to enhance and upscale this video to HD, making it look better than it did in 1990. We share it here as a thank you and a tribute to the "with it" guys, and Kiki Stockhammer for creating this paradigm shift!

Open source ZeroTier is an encrypted virtual network backbone, allowing multiple machines to communicate as if they were on a single network

Bild/Foto
The code is all open source, and you can self-host the controller or use the ZeroTierOne service with either free or paid plans. Their free plan (cloud based) is robust, solid, and very consistent.

After you have two nodes connected, connecting to each other — no matter where you are or what side of any firewalls you may be on — is exactly what you would expect if you were in the same building on the same network. A primary use case is for remote access to a Home Assistant setup without needing to open up firewall ports or expose it to the internet.

The linked article explains how to get going with it.

DDoSers are using a potent new method to deliver attacks of unthinkable size

Basically, "middleboxes" used for censorship are being used for DDoSing.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2022/03/unending-data-floods-and-complete-resource-exhaustion-ddoses-get-meaner/

These servers—known as middleboxes—are deployed by nation-states such as China to censor restricted content and by large organizations to block sites pushing porn, gambling, and pirated downloads. The servers fail to follow transmission control protocol specifications that require a three-way handshake—comprising an SYN packet sent by the client, an SYN+ACK response from the server, followed by a confirmation ACK packet from the client—before a connection is established.

The Hidden Life of Trees

When we pursue nature protection, we’re not protecting nature. We’re protecting ourselves.

Branching off of his bestselling book, renowned forester and writer Peter Wohlleben guides us through his most precious ideas and understanding of how trees work in this enlightening documentary. Presenting ecological, biological and academic expertise with matter-of-fact candor, Peter inspires us to really see the forest for the trees. Traveling through Germany, Poland, Sweden and Vancouver, Peter discusses, debates and explains the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration he has observed in the woodland, and the amazing scientific mechanisms behind these wonders of which we are too often blissfully unaware.

Pingnoo – an open source cross-platform graphical traceroute/ping analyser with jitter and latency graphs for each hop

The software generates attractive graphs showing the history of each hop. The attractive visuals makes it easy to follow network routes and finding the causes of downtimes and poor network performance. This is helped by the software’s tab support, which lets you analyse multiple routes simultaneously.

The modular architecture of Pingnoo allows third parties to extend the features of the software. The main application binary is very small and only serves as a loader for components (aka plugins).

There’s support for IPv4 and IPv6. We can change the interval, and the duration of the viewport. For the latter, the default is 60 seconds, but there’s also durations of 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, 12 hours, and 24 hours.

Wifi Networks Can Count How Many People Are in a Room | Gizmodo

In addition to getting the vaccine and wearing a mask, simply minimizing the size of crowds can help stop the spread of the covid-19 virus. To that end, researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara, led by Yasamin Mostofi, have found a way to leverage a run-of-the-mill wifi network as a tool for counting the number of people in a given space.

Nebula is an open source cross-platform scalable overlay networking tool with a focus on performance, simplicity and security

It lets you seamlessly connect computers anywhere in the world. Nebula is portable, and runs on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, and Android. It can be used to connect a small number of computers, but is also able to connect tens of thousands of computers.

Nebula incorporates a number of existing concepts like encryption, security groups, certificates, and tunneling, and each of those individual pieces existed before Nebula in various forms. What makes Nebula different to existing offerings is that it brings all of these ideas together, resulting in a sum that is greater than its individual parts.

Nebula is a mutually authenticated peer-to-peer software defined network based on the Noise Protocol Framework. Nebula uses elliptic curve Diffie-Hellman key exchange, and AES-256-GCM in its default configuration. Nebula was created to provide a mechanism for groups hosts to communicate securely, even across the internet, while enabling expressive firewall definitions similar in style to cloud security groups.

It was developed by Slack and powers their networking worldwide.

It always amazes me when people that claim to be against de-platforming and condemn the actions of anti Free Speech companies like twitter, not only continue to post to it but when I mention Diaspora not only do they have no idea what I'm talking about, but don't even put in effort to find out. This even includes long-time tech-y type dudes.

Then again, look how long its taken bitcoin to catch the public eye compared to when it actually started, and that involves money.

NAT (Network Address Translation): Necessary Evil or Necessary Security?

The purpose of this post is to invite a discussion.

I see blogs and posts at various places on the Internet written by people who seem to see NAT as an annoyance. In fact, there are people who champion IPv6 specifically because it overcomes the "problem" of NAT. To me, NAT is a wonderful thing.

  • I love NAT. NAT allows an IP address to be shared by many devices and/or individuals. This solves the problem of having more devices than possible IP addresses, but, more importantly, it provides an NAT firewall. It's a barrier between me and the larger network that makes me safer and more private.
  • Some don't like NAT. One objection is that devices in the larger-area network can't easily initiate connections to devices in the more-local-area network. These people actually want to expose open ports to the wider network, despite the obvious safety problems this causes.

I actually see the Internet as the premier security problem in the 21^st^ century. Protecting ourselves and our devices from it is paramount. Of course big business wants everything to be "smart." In this context, "smart" just means connected to the Internet. This is madness. We all need to resist "smart" devices. Don't buy them or use them. It's just too foolish. In my country it's estimated that 1 out of 5 adults has suffered some form of identity theft. This madness needs to stop.
