As temperatures rise, so do myths about sunscreen - Quebec group warns against false and misleading information on social media

Experts are warning Canadians not to heed misinformation spread online that sunscreen can cause cancer, stressing that proper use of the right lotions or sprays is, in fact, one of the best ways to prevent potentially deadly ailments like melanoma.

Quebec’s Order of Chemists warned last week against what it called a worrying trend circulating on social networks where some influencers spread false and misleading information about sunscreen, claiming that its ingredients are harmful to the skin and can cause cancer. The group said the assertions, devoid of scientific basis, can endanger public health.

One such influencer on TikTok recently warned their 570,000 followers to not use any sunscreen whose ingredients have “any funny words other than zinc.”

Julia Carroll, a dermatologist in Toronto, says much of the misinformation fails to look at the medical literature as a whole on sunscreen ingredients, which points to their safety.

The Great Fediverse Exodus: What's Really Happening?Yes, you read that right. While the overall numbers might suggest growth, a deeper look reveals a worrying trend: the monthly active users on the Fediverse have plummeted to half of what they once were. Even the big profiles are feeling the pinch with dwindling interactions. Could it be that the Fediverse honeymoon is over?

Meanwhile, Twitter/X is seeing a resurgence. More and more users are flocking back, reigniting the platform with a surge of interactions. Is this the beginning of the end for the Fediverse, or just a bump in the road?

Let’s hear your thoughts!

What X's move to hide our likes means for accountability

Journalists frequently scrutinized politicians' likes, but that era is over as platform makes likes private

This week, X, formerly known as Twitter, made likes private — meaning people can no longer see which users have liked posts. It's a move the company says is aimed at improving privacy, however, experts say the change will harm the public's ability to hold the powerful to account.

Public likes on the social media platform were always a double-edged sword. They established a public record of every user's interests and interactions. But they were also an occasional source of trouble for politicians, celebrities and even site owner Elon Musk, whose likes were frequently examined by journalists and the public.

"Likes were this really important and interesting way to understand the types of content those in power really consume and agree with," said Liam McLaughlin, a communication and media lecturer at the University of Liverpool.

"Removing this content is a poor move for democracy, some might argue."

Adults and teens turn to 'dumbphones' to cut screen time

phones

According to a study by Harvard University, using social networking sites lights up the same part of the brain that is also triggered when taking an addictive substance. This has raised concerns about phone habits among youth.

In the UK, research by Ofcom estimates that around a quarter of children aged five to seven years old now have their own smartphone.

Links have been shown in some studies between use of social media and a negative effect on mental health - especially in children.

A report by the New York Times revealed that Israel's Ministry of Diaspora Affairs funded a $2 million covert influence campaign to target U.S. lawmakers and the public during the Gaza conflict.

The campaign, executed by Tel Aviv-based Stoic, a political marketing firm, targeted the American public and members of Congress through hundreds of fake accounts on X, #Facebook, and #Instagram to advocate for continued military funding.

In the process, three fake English-language news sites were set up to support the campaign and bolster support for Israel's actions in #Gaza.

The first social media babies are adults now. Some are pushing for laws to protect kids from their parents’ oversharing

McCarty said the most egregious offenders are parents who seek out and even create drama among their children to boost their followings.

“Imagine a family vlog where instead of antics, intimate details such as mental health issues, grades and personal things like potty training and first periods get shared online, where they live forever,” McCarty said.

“Parents then use this clip as clickbait to generate intrigue and revenue for a monetized family channel. Some accounts even record and monetize videos in which the parents encourage their kids to fight each other as a prank.”

McCarty advises parents to operate under the golden rule of do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

“If your child posted things like, ‘Oh, you know, my mom just got into a really big fight with her colleague at work the other day.’ ‘Oh, my mom didn’t close this business deal at work, and she might get fired.’ ‘Oh, my mom and my dad aren’t getting along because he spends too much time at the bar,’” McCarty said. “It’s the intimacy of what’s being shared that strangers don’t have any right to know.”

Adults would be hurt if someone revealed their most personal details online to make money, McCarty said, adding that parents should assume their children would be, too.
