Open Source Thunderbird 115 Supernova E-Mail Released: Even If You Use Gmail, Thunderbird Will Back it Up For You

Thunderbird application screen
The Thunderbird client has got a big makeover. It is not just an e-mail client though as it also has calendaring, contacts and tasks built-in, and many additional add-on’s that provide extra customisation and functionality.

The app will connect via IMAP to most e-mail services to download and sync your e-mail offline. If you have e-mail at various services, Thunderbird will consolidate that for you in one app.

But even if you’re still a Gmail user, Thunderbird is a great way to sync your e-mail offline so that you have your own permanent copy of all your mails. Who knows when Google will tire of providing Gmail.

And if you feel like a version of Thunderbird on steroids, Betterbird is an enhanced version of Thunderbird with new features and bug fixes not available in Mozilla Thunderbird. Betterbird looks and feels like Thunderbird, but it’s easy to spot the new features available. Many of these features have been requested for over a decade, and some have been attempted and failed. Betterbird already updated to the Thunderbird 115 build on 8 July 2023.

I installed the latest Ubuntu on Katharina's HP laptop earlier this year. I had created a backup of all her about 700 contacts on her external HDD, and imported them into Thunderbird's address book.

For half a year it worked just fine until last week the address book completely disappeared from Thunderbird, that even a Linux specialist could no find it via remote connection. I could not help her as since Monday I am in bed with fever and feeling quite low.

On the phone I tried to help her by doing the same thing with importing the 6 address books from the external HDD but, as the there is no address book in Thunderbird nothing could show up.

Maybe someone of you knows a simple solution (re-installing is my only option) for recovering the address book.

How can it happen that a main item just disappears completely? It looks like Linux is not the ideal at all.

In days gone by I used to use #Enigmail to #ecrypt #e-mail messages where possible (precious few of my correspondents use encryption, sadly). This used to be an addon for #Thunderbird but support for it was dropped some time ago as native support for #OpenPGP was incorporated into it. After a long hiatus, I decided to get back to seeing how to use the new interface, particularly with version 102 of Thunderbird. It looks pretty easy once you've configured the settings.
