A conversation with Harvard #political scientist Daniel Ziblatt about how #democracies die — and how a pro-democracy movement could keep ours alive

..."you have to get involved with real #organizations, where people are coming together face to face. This can mean #volunteering at your local precinct office of the Democratic Party. It turns out it's a really low bar to get involved. You could very quickly become the leader of the #local precinct office. And then you notice that nobody can meet regularly because they all have kids. So you work to set up a thing where people are sharing childcare duties, and next everyone is thinking about who should be the candidate in the next election.
...
they're voting on whether or not to introduce ranked order voting. And some of the defenders of the status quo said, "Well, I understand the national symbolism of this, but what's wrong in Lexington that really needs this reform?" Which I thought was a very good question to ask. And so people tried to make the case, "Well, if you look at who's running for office, it's all the same people over and over. Maybe if we did this, we'd have different people." So, people are engaged at the local level. And they're downloading white papers from Protect Democracy, and understanding the importance of these institutional reforms, and they can then become engaged on that level too.

That's my best answer: being engaged through real organizations, whether in local electoral politics, unions, church and religious institutions, that are addressing the real concerns of people's everyday lives.
...
There are overwhelming majorities of Americans who do value these institutions and value liberal principles, and value principles of racial equality. I was looking at some survey data on whether or not you think there should be rules, restrictions on where people can live on the basis of race. In the mid-1970s, very high percentages of Americans agreed that there should be. Today, overwhelming percentages of Americans think the opposite, conservative and liberal alike."...

Coronation’s Big Help Out volunteering project at risk of lack of participants

Volunteering was in “steady decline”, a trend that without government intervention was likely to continue. “You look at levels of volunteering over the last decade and it’s just been relentlessly downhill,” he added. “It’s hard to put a gloss on it.”

#Volunteering is at a historic low in England, government research shows. In 2021-22, 34% of respondents to the Community Life Survey volunteered at least once a month, down from 41% the year before and 44% in 2013-14.

The latest figures mark the lowest ever participation recorded by the survey, which has been running for a decade.

Software development volunteering opportunity:

Community Impact Network

We would like to highlight the extraordinary work our ChangeMakers are doing by showcasing their created content and impact metrics across a network-wide activity feed. This will enable our ChangeMakers, and businesses to see the results of their participation, feel a part of a larger community, and create a groundswell of participation from yet-to-be-discovered ChangeMakers across our region.

Our initial web app (beta) focused on creating a marketplace and facilitating complementary currency transactions among ChangeMakers and local businesses. Although we have crafted a community on the ground around this, our current web app does little to showcase, gamify, and curate the impact our ChangeMakers are making.

We would like to improve our Proof of Impact (POI) functionality to will enable ChangeMakers to define impactful work for themselves. However, we create a framework for this definition using the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Proof of Impact enables ChangeMakers to generate content (such as before and after photos, video testimonials, etc) and data (impact metrics) about the work that they've done. We aim to have the web app pull metadata from content (such as photo location and time-stamps) to further validate their claims. From their work, ChangeMakers will earn 15CC/hour ($15 value).

This POI will be showcased in a network-wide activity feed viewable by all users across the network. Other ChangeMakers (CMs) and businesses will then approve their work based on the validity of documentation.

The proof of impact will be segmented by tags indicating the type of work, and impact area (SDGs). As ChangeMakers create Proof of Impact (POI), standard POI templates will allow CMs that complete similar work to document their work using the same templates. Additionally, these tags will enable disparate CMs to find others doing similar work and combine efforts. Certain POIs could eventually be segmented into initiatives/projects/or campaigns and viewable as such.

Disability Navigator App

https://app.code4socialgood.org/project/view/3126

What do individuals with disabilities need the most help with in regards to inclusion? Finding accurate information that meets their needs for services, support, funding, livelihood, etc. There are over 2 million adults in my state with a disability (CDC). This is equal to 23% or 1 in 4 adults. My state is currently ranked 47th in the nation for providing funding and services to adults with developmental disabilities and it’s not getting better. When an individual leaves high school, their support seemingly ends too and the resources they need cannot be found. Through my research, I have found that the resources are there, but the findability is not. I also know this to be true because I have experienced it. I am the legal co-guardian for my 35-year-old sister who has Down syndrome.

My background is in building technology solutions and implementing digital marketing strategies for large corporations. I am looking for developers who understand JavaScript and how to build backend databases using JSON. I am putting together a team to help me create a web-based platform prototype that supports people with special needs. This tool will be an integrated solution. Contact me to learn more about the details.

If you’re not a developer but have a passion for supporting the special needs population by way of technology then please contact me too. The diversification of thought is also a superpower.

Developing API's with Rwanda's National Reference Lab

BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH), Seattle-based NGO, has partnered with the Rwandan Ministry of Health to introduce HPV-based cervical cancer screening services to Rwandan districts for the first time. HPV samples are being collected at district health facilities and transported to the National Reference Lab (NRL) for testing. Currently, the LABWARE LIS system used at Rwanda’s NRL is not linked to OpenMRS (the National EMR system). For now, NRL has hired staff to manually enter HPV results from LABWARE LIS into the corresponding patient profile in OpenMRS. BVGH would like to support the NRL to link these two systems for more efficient exchange of data [these systems were previously confirmed by NRL IT to be interoperable, but not yet linked]. We are reaching out to partners in our network to identify a volunteer software developer consultant who could work with NRL to develop APIs and link these systems.

Website for Special Needs

My brother is Down Syndrome and over the years my family has struggled to find programs, caretakers, and benefits for him in our community. We have identified a solution that I believe will make the lives of every parent and caretaker of a special needs person- and even special needs individuals themselves- much easier and more supported. With that said, I have created a non-profit and a website on Wix and am now at the stage where I need help creating a search engine integrated with Google with ready-made filters that can be applied to filter search results and quickly locate desired information. I don't know exactly how to tackle it or how difficult of a project this is, so we will have to discuss it further. I will also need help with optimization but that isn't my first priority. I'd love to work with someone who has a passion for the special needs community.
