Backpack-wearing dogs enlisted to #rewild urban nature reserve in Lewes

Backpack-wearing dogs are being enlisted to “act like wolves” to help rewild an urban nature reserve in the East Sussex town of Lewes.

Before wolves were persecuted to extinction in the UK in about 1760, they were known to roam large areas, typically covering 12 miles (20km) or more each night.

In doing so, wolves would inadvertently pick up wildflower and grass seeds in their fur, dispersing them many miles away and helping establish new colonies of plants, which is vital for biodiversity and for ecosystems to thrive.

Unique friendship between wolf and bear documented by Finnish photographer

“It’s very unusual to see a bear and a wolf getting on like this” says Finnish photographer Lassi Rautiainen, 56, who took these surprising photos.

From what I could find, it’s actually the first time, at least in Europe, where such a friendship was developed.

#siberia #wolves
I've forgotten how many years ago I wrote this.
Wild Siberian Wolf
I’m in Siberia.
There’s nothing and no one ahead.
There’s nothing and no one behind.
There’s only breathing and my eyes blinking.
I’ll think a thought and feel warm tears on my cold face.
I lie down on the ground and cover my eyes.
I don’t want to see anything.
I only want to take my last breath.
But no. I know it. I know it.
A wild Siberia wolf will arrive. He will lick my cheek,
and howl a howl that can be heard from Siberia to Mongolia.

“Go ahead, I think, rip my throat out."
He’ll lie down beside me and our breathing
will become as one.
I’ll wake up in my bed and the bright Sun will be shining.
I’ll reach out to touch the wolf beside me.
He won’t be there.
I close my eyes and see
I’m in Siberia.
There’s nothing and no one ahead.
There’s nothing and no one behind.

TOXIC MASCULINITY
Wolves killed. The unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible. - Oscar Wilde

One-fifth of Wisconsin’s gray wolf (Canis lupus) population is dead after hunters and trappers slaughtered more than 200 animals in a three-day, sanctioned trophy binge. Official numbers reported by Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) show the “harvest” exceeded quota numbers in every zone, resulting in almost twice the number of wolf-kills as was sanctioned.

Wolves discriminate quantities better than dogs

Being able to mentally consider quantities makes sense for any social species. This skill is important during the search for food, for example, or to determine whether an opponent group outnumbers one's own. Scientists from the Messerli Research Institute at the Vetmeduni Vienna studied how well dogs can discriminate between different quantities and discovered that wolves perform better than dogs at such tasks. Possibly dogs lost this skill, or a predisposition for it, during domestication. The results were published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
