“Albator”, de Leiji Matsumoto : de Harlock à Daft Punk, chronologie d’un manga culte
Alors que son créateur vient de s’éteindre à l’âge de 85 ans, retour sur le parcours tumultueux du corsaire le plus célèbre de la galaxie manga.
Début 1970, la traduction de plusieurs oeuvres de science fiction américaine fait découvrir le genre au Japon. Surfant sur cette nouvelle mode, la maison d’édition Hayakawa Shobo acquiert les droits de plusieurs romans de l’américaine Catherine Lucille Moore et en confie l'illustration à un certain Leiji Matsumoto. Ce dernier commence à se faire un nom en tant que mangaka (dessinateur de manga). Parmi les personnages de Moore, le dessinateur découvre #NorthwestSmith, héros hors-la-loi, vivant à bord de son vaisseau spatial, voguant de planète en planète, et qui l'aurait largement influencé pour le côté rebelle au grand coeur d’Albator. L'idée d'un corsaire de l'espace trotte en effet dans la tête du Japonais depuis un certain moment. « On devrait d'ailleurs parler de pirate, car Albator n'est pas à la solde d'un roi, mais cela fait tout de suite moins romantique » précise Julien Pirou, créateur d'un site référence sur Matsumoto.
Le style Matsumoto
Né en 1938, #LeijiMatsumoto commence à dessiner à 15 ans. Déjà, le design du drapeau pirate, plus tard utilisé comme pavillon noir de l’ #Arcadia (le vaisseau d’Albator, #Atlantis en français), est couché sur le papier. En 1954, il publie son premier manga Les aventures d’une abeille. Dès lors, Matsumoto va faire preuve d’une productivité à toute épreuve. En France, l’auteur est principalement connu pour ses œuvres de science fiction, qui ne sont qu’une petite partie de son travail. Au Japon, il s’inscrit dans une mouvance beaucoup plus réaliste. Nombre de ses mangas sont des satires sociales sur de jeunes tokyoïtes ayant du mal à s’en sortir. Mais Matsumoto, c’est avant tout un style graphique identifiable, qui fut inspiré par le « père » du manga, #Tezuka ( #AstroBoy, Le Roi Léo), mais aussi par des auteurs francophones comme Jean-Claude Forest (Barbarella) ouJean-Claude Mézières (Valérian), et qui conjugue des objets mécaniques très détaillés aux côtés de personnages aux traits enfantins et au physique caricatural. Sur le fond, pour Julien Pirou, « la caractéristique d'Albator, ce sont ses récits emplis de poésie ».
En 1969, le manga Dai Kaizoku #CaptainHarlock (« Captain Harlock le grand pirate ») est la première apparition officielle d'Albator, sans lien avec celui que l'on connait aujourd'hui. Comme dans les comics, il n'existe pas spécifiquement de lien entre le différentes histoires.
Albator devient un dessin animé
En parallèle d'Albator, Matsumoto s’essaye à partir de 1974, à l’animation avec la série #Yamato dont il conçoit les personnages et les vaisseaux. Très intéressé par son travail, la TOEI, célèbre studio japonais, lui propose de l'adapter en version animé. C’est donc en 1977 que Matsumoto créé une suite à son héros balafré et qui donnera naissance à #Harlock78, directement inspiré des mangas, qui continueront à être publié dans le même temps. Dès les premiers épisodes, c’est un immense succès au Japon, qui ne mettra pas longtemps à arriver en France, « même si peu de gens savaient que l'anime venait du Japon à cause de son style plus occidental » note Julien Pirou.
En 1978, la série est diffusée durant l’émission #RécréA2 sous le nom d’Albator 78, et malgré de bonnes audiences, les trois derniers épisodes ne sortent pas chez nous, les batailles spatiales étant jugées trop violentes. Il n’y a d’ailleurs qu’en France que le nom du héros a été adapté, considéré comme trop proche du Capitaine Haddock de Tintin. La légende raconte que c'est #ÉricCharden, compositeur et interprète du générique français, qui aurait proposé ce nom après avoir assisté à un match de rugby. L’un des joueurs se nommait Jean-Claude Ballatore, et le chanteur aurait ainsi déclamé « Ballatore fend les airs tel un albatros ».
Clash entre la TOEI et Matsumoto
L'année suivante, Matsumoto crée son #manga le plus populaire au Japon à ce jour, #GalaxyExpress999, l'histoire d'un train parcourant l'espace à la recherche d'une planète offrant l'immortalité. Et par deux fois, dans les films d'animation tirés de la série, Albator apparaît dans cet univers en tant que personnage secondaire. La TOEI qui croit encore à la popularité du héros demande à Matsumoto d'écrire de nouvelles histoires, qui déboucheront sur deux nouveaux longs métrages d'animation : Le mystère de l'Atlantis (1978) et L'Atlantis de ma jeunesse (1982).
Encore une fois, le succès populaire d'Albator au Japon ne se dément pas, et c'est donc en toute logique que le studio d'animation japonais demande une suite à #Albator78. Mais une divergence de point de vue sur la direction à donner à Albator 84 mettra fin, en 1982, à la collaboration entre la #TOEI et Matsumoto. Ce différent aura pour conséquence « une baisse significative de la qualité des épisodes », estime Julien Pirou. Diffusé à 19h au Japon face à un autre « gros » manga de l'époque, #UruseiYatsura (diffusé sous le titre #Lamu en France), la série obtient de mauvaises audiences et s'arrête au bout de 22 épisodes. Du coup, Matsumoto prend une décision radicale : quitter le monde de l' #animation.
La nouvelle vie d’Albator
Au début des années 2000, le duo électro Daft Punk, fan de son univers, demande à #Matsumoto de superviser une série de clips pour accompagner la sortie de leur album Discovery (2001), qui seront rassemblés en un long métrage, Interstella 5555 (2003). En dehors de cette collaboration prestigieuse qui lui offre une visibilité méritée auprès des plus jeunes, le génial #dessinateur se fait discret. Aujourd'hui, le personnage du capitaine Harlock reste néanmoins une référence dans l'univers de la science fiction nippone et l'influence de Matsumoto est intacte. Un reboot d’Albator a été réalisé en images de synthèse (2013) par Shinji Aramaki, et une nouvelle série de mangas a vu le jour à l'été 2014. Matsumoto en supervise l'écriture des scénarios et a délégué l'illustration à #KôichiShimahoshi. Qu'on se rassure, #Albator n'a donc pas fini de veiller sur la galaxie...
