Arizona Teen Finds Lost Pets Using Drone Technology

Pastore said he does most of his best work at night. “I don’t normally do my searches during the day because it’s so hot. What I’ll do is, I’ll get this one up in the sky at nighttime, and it has a thermal camera, so I’ll look for any heat signatures, like cats, dogs, anything moving, really.” TRACC Pet Recovery has already been successful at reuniting pets with their owners. “Once they realize that their dog [or cat] has been found, they get super emotional, and of course, happy,” he said.

FAA Greenlights Amazon Drone Delivery Beyond Visual Line Of Sight

drone

With FAA clearance secured, Amazon is set to begin drone deliveries later this year in College Station, Texas, where the company began its drone deliveries in 2022. According to Amazon, this regulatory approval paves the way for it to reach customers in densely populated areas, laying the foundation for scaling operations across the United States.

What could go wrong? Aside from the constant noise and potential for accidents, this will launch a whole new class of "porch pirates" following these around neighbourhoods. The comments on that article outline many of the concerns, like how will this work for apartments, etc...

Airlines Sue Transportation Department Over ‘Junk Fee’ Ban

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg fired back on social media, “We just issued a rule requiring airlines to inform you, before you buy a ticket, of fees they will charge you. Now the airline lobby is suing us, saying that if you have the right to that information it will ‘confuse’ you. For once, I am speechless.”

Travolta’s Pilots Charged With Embezzling Almost $800,000

A gutsy and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to rob actor John Travolta

Two pilots are charged with embezzling close to $800,000 from actor/pilot John Travolta’s production company. The Marion County (Florida) Sheriff’s Department confirmed to AVweb that Jean Paul Lacruz-Romero is in custody. Local news outlets have reported that Lacruz-Romero is charged with organized fraud, grand theft and money laundering. The second pilot, identified as Jorden David Coursey, is being sought for similar charges. Both have since been terminated by Constellation Productions, which lists Travolta as president.

Walmart-Google Linkup Adds Drone Delivery To 60,000 Households

Last month, a supermarket news report detailed a recent partnership between Walmart and Google-owned drone delivery firm Wing centered on the Dallas area, adding drone delivery capability to some 60,000 households. A Wing Supercenter in Frisco, Texas, could be followed up early this year with a second Supercenter in the region.

The comments on this article (generally written by pilots) are worth reading, like this one:

Basically they’re just saying that today, the general public, is just too lazy to do their own shopping. With door dash, Uber eats, and grub hub, American families will be getting ever more lazy.

And fatter and even less healthy. I could put in an order for Bourbon, have it flown to me, and claim that I am just protecting the general public by not driving drunk. But the reality would be completely different….

Diversity Naysayers Make Labor Crisis Worse

A good article by Russ Niles on #AVweb. The story deals with #aviation, but is widely applicable and well argued.

One of the most interesting, frustrating, entertaining and occasionally frightening tasks of the modern-day editor is monitoring the comments on the stories we run. Most outlets have disabled comments because it’s just too much damn work to filter out the mean, hateful and irrelevant missives that inevitably appear no matter what the topic. It must be all Trump’s fault. Or wait, maybe it’s Biden’s.

Journalism Hits a New Low

Wow, I am amazed! I just read what could be the most badly written news article written to date, with a completely misleading title to boot! You have to read the first eight paragraphs of absolute off-topic trash to even find out what the heck the article is about. Then the writer then goes on to spout a bunch nonsense and a bunch stuff cribbed from the company press release.

The garbage article: Popular travel retailer files Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Writer Daniel Kline gets the award for worst journalist of 2023!!

Here is the real story from #AVweb, in case you want to figure out what that was about: Van’s Files For Chapter 11 Protection

First Flight of the Samson Switchblade

A non-folding wing prototype of this flying car design was flown on 9 November 2023 after 14 years of development. That must have eaten a lot of venture capital! The company claims 2,300 customer orders for these, but no idea when an actual production prototype with the real folding wings will fly or what the price will be.

You will need a diver's licence and a pilots licence to operate this.

Finally some action on #spacejunk

The NPRM ... lays out five upper stage disposal options including conducting a controlled reentry, moving it to a less congested storage or graveyard orbit, sending it on an Earth-escape orbit, retrieving it within five years and performing an uncontrolled atmospheric disposal or natural decay within 25 years. The FAA noted that the proposed rule would “align commercial space orbital debris mitigation practices with those accepted by the U.S. government for its space missions.” The rule will be open for public comment for 90 days following its publication in the Federal Register.

Ph.D. Meteorologist Documents Impact Of Global Warming On Turbulence

Compared with La Niña years that have the opposite effect, El Niño increases the incidence of wind shear—conflicting airflows that create severe turbulence not associated with visible storms caused by convective activity. Williams found “when there’s a strong El Niño event, there is 50 percent more moderate-or-greater CAT over large parts of the U.S. and the North Atlantic. And when there’s a strong La Niña event, there’s about 50 percent less moderate-or-greater CAT than normal.” Williams did note that the climate-based effects are not as strong in Europe.

But Williams’s research doesn’t stop with the predictable effects of warmer El Niño years or cooler La Niña interludes. In research conducted in 2019, he concluded that global warming across the board has demonstrably contributed to increased air turbulence, worldwide.

AVweb Lowers the Boom on Article Comments

#AVweb is one of the leading #internet #aviation #news sources, and, like a lot of news sites they allow comments on articles by readers. Over the years most of the commenting has some from pilots and other people involved in aviation who make up their readership ansd these have generally been thoughtful, insightful and add some perspective to the subject. In the last few years there has been a problem, just like on much of #socialmedia, as their publisher explains:

Too many times in recent months information about aviation has spiraled downward into political dogma, disinformation and ranting. These toxic tirades spoil the experience for the rest of us and demonstrate that the loud and often misinformed get way too much of the attention, drowning out the reasoned information and debate brought forth by other readers. We think a vigorous forum benefits everyone, as long as comments are germane to the topic. But we are going to be more aggressive in deleting comments and blocking commenters if the bad behavior persists. We won’t allow name-calling, disparaging political language, toxic chat focused on individuals or groups, misinformed, pseudo-scientific theorizing, or general off-point bombast. Going forward, anyone who chooses to ignore that policy will be blocked from commenting following their third deleted post.

Readers who sully our comments section are entering a place where we live and work, and leaving their mess behind for us to clean up. Let’s be clear, there are other websites where the politically and polemically minded can congregate. Not here. Please respect AVweb, its readers and its staff by keeping comments free of vitriol.

Sad that this needed to be said, but it has been quite needed, unfortunately.
