Garden centres in UK stockpile plants before new #Brexit checks

Yet another #BrexitBenefit

The government will introduce physical checks for many plant and animal products coming into Britain from the EU on 30 April as part of its new border target operating model (Btom).

However, plant sellers and growers have consistently raised concerns that the checks could cause delays and lead to some plants being destroyed or damaged.

Britons support rejoining the single market, even if it means free movement

New YouGov data indicates that more Britons are in fact supportive of joining the single market, even under this condition, than in opposition. Just short of six in ten Britons (57%) would support the UK joining the single market, even if this meant a return to free movement, with only around one in five (22%) opposed.

Barclays cut my expat mother off from vital care home funds

Another Brexit Failure ...

#Barclays has form when it comes to cutting elderly widows off from their money. The reasons for the closures differ, but the underlying incompetence and insouciance are disturbingly similar.

Your mother fell victim to EU rules which, post-Brexit, require UK banks to apply for separate licences to serve customers in each EU country.

To save themselves the hassle and cost, many banks simply closed expats’ accounts. Barclays shut the last of its in December.

There is a set process for claiming the balance from a defunct account, but a succession of errors stymied your efforts. First you were told that the account was dormant, rather than closed. This meant you were directed to follow the wrong process, which got you nowhere.

Next, branch staff failed to acknowledge your LPA documents, which meant your mother was put through the stress of signing a letter of authority.

Barclays only admitted these blunders after I got in touch and it took a media prod to get it to release the funds

UK fails to ban 36 harmful pesticides outlawed for use in EU

Campaigners say Britain becoming ‘toxic poster child of Europe’ and accuse ministers of breaking Brexit promise on standards

Though ministers promised the UK would not water down EU-derived environmental standards after Brexit, there have been multiple instances of divergence since the country left the bloc.

Now, the country is failing to phase out pesticides that have been found to be harmful to human health and the environment at the same rate as the EU, according to research from Pesticide Action Network (PAN).

Thirteen of the 36 chemicals are considered highly hazardous pesticides under UN definitions used to identify the most harmful substances.

Guy Hands: ‘I thought Brexit was frankly nuts’

“What Brexit was largely about was people at the top being able to employ the rest of the country for a lot less and pay a lot less tax,” he says.

Hands should know. He is one of those people at the top, a former Tory donor who is the founder and chair of Terra Firma, a private equity firm he founded. It has made him a multi-millionaire and one of the best-known figures in the British financial system.

Orient Express to axe UK section after 41 years due to Brexit

When the Orient Express began operating in the 19th century, passports were optional – the only paperwork required by British travellers was a copy of the Thomas Cook Continental Timetable.

But Brexit and 21st-century biometric checks are killing off the romance of crossing borders for modern passengers looking for the nostalgia of the luxury train journey that inspired Agatha Christie and Hollywood.

Belmond, the company that runs today’s Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE), has decided to drop the London-to-Folkestone leg of the route because it has become too difficult to cross the border to Calais.

Petrol bombs and punishment beatings: paramilitaries still rooted in Northern Ireland

A quarter of a century after the end of the Troubles, paramilitaries continue to recruit, march, intimidate and, on occasion, kill

One year on, what′s next for Brexit?

A year after Britain's new trade pact with the EU was sealed, UK exports to the bloc have plunged. With unfinished business around fisheries, Northern Ireland and financial services, what's next for Brexit?

New rules governing EU-UK trade took effect in January 2021, requiring four-page customs forms for all goods and health certificates for meat and dairy products. As a result, British exports to the EU fell nearly 15% in the first 10 months of the year, according to the EU's statistics agency Eurostat, while UK agri-food exports dropped by more than 25%.

Brexit was supposed to bring an end to EU bureaucracy, but instead of allowing a bonfire of red tape, the additional paperwork hiked export costs that hit many UK and EU-based businesses hard.

"What we can say is that the notable loss of UK trade with continental Europe … was not mirrored in UK trade with the rest of the world," Iain Begg, Professorial Research Fellow at the European Institute, London School of Economics (LSE)
