Fake ads, real politics: the art of Foka Wolf, the ‘Birmingham Banksy’ – in pictures

The Guardian

Anonymous street artist Foka Wolf uses the language of advertising to highlight political and social issues, from the PPE crisis to food banks. “I grew up in a low income, single-parent household,” he says, “so I take it very fucking personally when people in power try and demonise those who are broke and voiceless.” Known as the Birmingham Banksy (“I prefer Poundland Banksy”), Wolf has fooled countless people with his fake billboards. “There’s a lot of power in putting words on paper. One poster was offering students money to grow 23 pairs of ears on their back and quite a few people were up for it.” During tough political times, does it get harder to make satire? “Easier. More dickheads – more targets.” (...)

Britain seems stuck in a doom loop of poverty. I have a plan to raise billions to address that

But how to fix it? Three seismic shifts have unfolded over the last decade.

First, the welfare safety net has been systematically shredded, with the government abandoning responsibilities taken for granted since 1945.

Second, charities and food banks, which have taken over from universal credit as the last line of defence, are exhausted and justifiably angry about having to pick up the pieces with insufficient resources. They even fear their desperate relief efforts could provide cover for the government walking further away.

Third, unsure how they fit into a poverty-free, pollution-free future, the corporate sector has in the last decade donated less, not more.

Yet the many business leaders who are now championing a greater sense of environmental and social responsibility know they can, and should, play a bigger role.

This graphic from the #BBC is telling. It shows the percentage that various income groups in the #UK pay in #tax. What can't be overlooked is how much the #poorest end up paying as a percentage of their #income. So while the richest can boast how much they are contributing in absolute terms to government services, the poor are paying nearly as much as a percentage of their already meagre spending power.

Iranian "Ham-Mihan" published an article just a few days after 45th anniversary of Iran's revolution comparing the prices of goods at the moment with those before the 1979 revolution.

According to the article, the annual inflation in Iran has always been around 20% and in some years over 40% , resulting in the staggering 900 thousand percent increase or 9000 times of almost all the items in the society.

This is very close the toe exchange rate of the US$ compared to Iranian Rial, back in the 79, 1 US$ was between 69 and 73 Rials, today it goes between 480k-620k rial.

As for the salary of the people, they have not followed the massive increase in prices and they have increased less than 5000 time, resulting in an almost 50% loss in purchase power of most of the citizens and a massive increase in poverty in the society.

I wish I could go back one day and have a chance to visit places I used to go to and have a chance to live (one last time at least) the joy of live in a place I always call home!

As a result of the wars unleashed by the U.S. after September 11, 2001, 38,000,000 civilians were displaced.

This is the second highest result in world history. Only World War II resulted in more refugees.

Direct military aggressions, the so-called "war on terror" which led to the creation of ISIS, and economic strangulation have all led to disastrous consequences for the people of a number of states in the Middle East and North Africa, forcing ordinary people to flee their homes, cities, villages and states to other countries.

According to a report https://t.co/MLXyekTZTQ by the Watson Institute for International Studies (an interdisciplinary research center at Brown University, Rhode Island, USA) and with the assistance of Boston University:

  1. #Afghanistan - 5.9 million refugees
  2. #Pakistan - 3.7 million refugees
  3. #Yemen - 4.6 million refugees
  4. #Somalia - 4.3 million refugees
  5. #Philippines - 1.8 million refugees
  6. #Libya - 1.2 million refugees
  7. #Syria - 7.1 million refugees

The report is based on data from 2001 to 2020 + some data collected in 2021.

It is based on the UN data, U.S. documents and information from public sources.

However, the report itself states that 38,000,000 is a very conservative estimate and in reality, the figure can reach from 49,000,000 to 60,000,000, which actually reaches the figures of World War II.

...

To these processes can be added the huge number of refugees from #Ukraine after the U.S.-backed coup d'état and civil war that broke out there.

Rheinmetall plans massive expansion of ammunition production in Germany

The arms manufacturer Rheinmetall is planning to significantly increase its production of 155-millimeter artillery ammunition. A new ammunition factory is being built in Unterlüß, Lower Saxony, and the German government is examining legal relaxations to allow production in stock.

Everything #politicians tell you about #immigration is wrong. This is how it actually works

source: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/dec/29/politicians-immigration-wrong-cheap-labour

The misleading assertion that #poverty causes #migration conceals the fact that #labour demand has been the main driver of growing immigration to western countries since the 1990s. More widespread #education, women’s #emancipation and #population ageing have led to labour shortages; these have fuelled a growing demand for #migrant workers in sectors such as #agriculture, #construction, #cleaning, #hospitality, #transport and food processing, as supplies of local #workers willing and able to do such jobs have increasingly run dry. Without such chronic labour shortages, most migrants wouldn’t have come.

Roughly 90 tickets have been issued since March to volunteers with the loosely organized Food Not Bombs, which serves meals to people in need near Central Library. The city has yet to win a single case.

#Nations don't get rich by plundering other nations

source: https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/nations-dont-get-rich-by-plundering

Anyway, there are two more sophisticated cases you can make for the “imperial plunder” #theory of national wealth. The first is that continuing plunder is responsible for income differences between countries. The second is that plunder was necessary to initiate the process that eventually led to industrial #production and modern science. The first of these arguments is wrong; the second can’t easily be disproven, but there’s major reason for doubt.

We can eliminate #poverty: but we have decided not to

#Tory MP and our trade secretary Kemi Badenoch tweeted:
“We don’t have a cure for poverty. If we did, we would have done it already.”

Of course, we know how to tackle poverty. As a matter of fact, there is less poverty in the #UK than once there was. As a result, unless you are wilfully blind, it is apparent that we do know how to tackle this issue.

The answers are relatively straightforward. Apart from paying decent benefits and appropriate pensions (neither of which happens in the UK at present) we also need to:

  • Build affordable social housing in sufficient quantity that everybody might enjoy it.
  • Ensure that essential public services, such as water, gas, electricity, telecoms and transport are affordably accessible to everyone.
  • Guarantee free healthcare and social care from cradle to grave.
  • Deliver high-quality education so that people can, if they wish, change their situations and are encouraged to do so.
  • Have a policy of full employment at a living wage.

... ...

The choice is simple. Do we run the #economy in the interests of those who are in need, or for the benefit of those who already have a great deal but want more? That is the political question that we need to answer now. To add piquancy, human life can only survive one of those choices. That should make deciding fairly easy.

She praised Donaldson for shining the spotlight on the need for clean water supply but warned that “the issue is sustainability. It’s one thing to go in and install the well, it’s another thing for us to go back to three, four, or five years from now, and see if that well is still functional.”
