Hospital admissions for waterborne diseases in England up 60%, report shows

The analysis follows widespread anger after record sewage spills were revealed this week. Environment Agency data showed that raw #sewage was discharged for more than 3.6m hours into rivers and seas last year – a 129% increase on the previous 12 months.

Increased raw sewage in rivers means there is a higher risk of infections, campaigners argue, as people are more likely to come into contact with the #bacteria in human waste.

New Oxford University analysis has debunked #NHS privatisation

Oxford researchers looked at studies of healthcare #privatisation and found they agreed on one thing: privatisation leads to poorer quality care for patients.

Every month, private hospitals send 550 of their patients to the NHS because of an emergency they had while in the private hospital?

What’s more, in the last four years, 791 NHS patients who were transferred to be treated in private hospitals have sued for #medical #negligence - AND WON.

The evidence is crystal clear. Privatisation works for shareholders, not patients.

Save NHS dentistry and make it fit for the 21st century

I’m Tom Thayer, a hospital consultant. I treat patients left with horrifying mouth injuries after trying to pull out their own teeth out.
Everyone who needs an NHS dentist should be able to get an appointment.

But overstretched and underfunded, there are now fewer and fewer #NHS #dentists available. A recent survey found nine out of ten practices are no longer taking on new NHS patients

UK: Crumbling schools plagued by leaks and cold, BBC finds

Schools in urgent need of repair have told Panorama they are struggling to keep children warm in buildings that are "not fit for purpose".

At one primary in Devon, temperatures are so low that children keep gloves and coats on during some lessons.

The head teacher says despite parts of the school being seemingly impossible to heat, he has been told it does not qualify for extra money for repairs.

UK records 4,950 excess winter deaths amid cost of living crisis

New official data shows that a significant amount of people lost their lives last winter - and it seems as is a lack of governmental legislation and poor insulation could be to blame.

Stark new figures estimate that some 4,950 excess winter deaths last year in the UK were down to people living in cold and damp homes.

New official data from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition says those figures were recorded during winter 2022/23.

The Warm This Winter study also found that, when the average winter temperature in the UK drops below four degrees centigrade, the level of excess winter deaths sky-rockets.

NHS medicines shortage putting lives at risk, pharmacists warn

Brexit benefits

An unprecedented medicines shortage in the NHS is endangering lives, pharmacists have said, as unpublished figures reveal that the number of products in short supply has doubled in two years.

Causes of the crisis are thought to include the plummeting purchasing value of the pound since the Brexit referendum

Breast Cancer Now, said her organisation had been contacted over the past 12 months by several patients unable to source the medicines they needed to control the spread of their disease.

Barclays cut my expat mother off from vital care home funds

Another Brexit Failure ...

#Barclays has form when it comes to cutting elderly widows off from their money. The reasons for the closures differ, but the underlying incompetence and insouciance are disturbingly similar.

Your mother fell victim to EU rules which, post-Brexit, require UK banks to apply for separate licences to serve customers in each EU country.

To save themselves the hassle and cost, many banks simply closed expats’ accounts. Barclays shut the last of its in December.

There is a set process for claiming the balance from a defunct account, but a succession of errors stymied your efforts. First you were told that the account was dormant, rather than closed. This meant you were directed to follow the wrong process, which got you nowhere.

Next, branch staff failed to acknowledge your LPA documents, which meant your mother was put through the stress of signing a letter of authority.

Barclays only admitted these blunders after I got in touch and it took a media prod to get it to release the funds

UK fails to ban 36 harmful pesticides outlawed for use in EU

Campaigners say Britain becoming ‘toxic poster child of Europe’ and accuse ministers of breaking Brexit promise on standards

Though ministers promised the UK would not water down EU-derived environmental standards after Brexit, there have been multiple instances of divergence since the country left the bloc.

Now, the country is failing to phase out pesticides that have been found to be harmful to human health and the environment at the same rate as the EU, according to research from Pesticide Action Network (PAN).

Thirteen of the 36 chemicals are considered highly hazardous pesticides under UN definitions used to identify the most harmful substances.

Clumps of 5,000-mile seaweed blob bring flesh-eating bacteria to Florida

But now giant clumps of the 13m-ton morass labeled the Great Atlantic sargassum belt are washing up on Florida’s beaches, scientists are warning of a real-life threat from the piles of decomposing algae, namely high levels of the flesh-eating Vibrio bacteria lurking in the vegetation.

Even more worrying, the researchers say, is the role of ocean pollution in the proliferation of the bacteria, which can cause disease and death if a person gets infected.

Samples tested from the Caribbean and #Sargasso Sea within the Atlantic were abundant with plastic debris, which interacted with the algae and bacteria to create a “perfect pathogen storm [with] implications for both marine life and public health”.

England’s water - The World’s Piggy Bank

England is one of the few countries in the world where water is fully owned by private companies. These companies answer to investors based thousands of miles away from their customers.

“What we have here is just a crazy system,” said Kate Bayliss, from the department of economics at SOAS University of London and author of several papers on England’s privatised water. “We are managing our water in the interests of offshore investors.”

These offshore investors include private and state-owned:

  • International funds
  • Banks
  • Multinationals
  • Billionaires

All headquartered outside the UK, and they control at least 72% of English water, new Guardian research has found.

Children rushed to hospital with scurvy as parents can't afford fruit and vegetables

United Kingdom now a third world country

Young children are being taken to hospital suffering with scurvy because their parents can't afford to feed them fruit and vegetables, nurses are warning.

Last year, a huge rise in cases the Victorian illness was reported.

There was tripling of hospital admissions for malnutrition since 2010, which was branded "a shameful indictment on a decade of the Tories" by Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth.

The worrying increases coincide with soaring numbers of people relying on food banks as the cost of living crisis deepens.

An open letter to Sir Keir Starmer on public ownership

1. Public ownership is popular

In Starmer's pamphlet, he talks with conviction about the values that, for us, sit behind strong public services working for people not profit.

We know that these policies resonate with people:

  • 64% of us want the railways to be in public ownership
  • 69% want the Royal Mail in public ownership
  • 52% want energy in public ownership
  • 63% want water in public ownership
  • 84% want our NHS fully in public ownership
  • 55% want to see services run in-house by councils
  • 55% want buses in public ownership
  • 62% want prisons in public ownership
  • 64% want social care in public ownership

2. Public ownership can help Labour tackle key challenges

In your #Fabians pamphlet you talk about how in government ‘A failure to actively shape and strengthen the economy means that vast potential is being wasted.’

You explain that ‘a Labour government would provide a level playing field, a skilled workforce and a modern infrastructure, from transport to public services.’ Public ownership can help to achieve these goals.

3. Public ownership saves money

Privatisation costs more because it means spending money on shareholder dividends and the higher cost of borrowing in the private sector (the government can borrow more cheaply). Creating artificial markets where they don’t belong also often creates wasteful fragmentation and duplication.

4. Public ownership can give people more control

In 2019, we responded to Labour’s consultation on democratic public ownership with a report ‘When We Own It: A model for public ownership in the 21st century’.

5. Public ownership is a common sense policy

'Best' of Capitalism ... Over

The OECD released its predictions for the world economy until 2060.

The clear message is the best of capitalism is over.

If born in 2014, then by 2060 you are either a 45-year-old barrister or a 45-year-old barista. The middle-income jobs have all but disappeared.

  • The world will be four times richer, more productive, more globalised and more highly educated.

  • There is no certainty at all that the information revolution of the past 20 years will cascade down into ever more highly productive and value-creating industries. The veteran US economist Robert Gordon has suggested the productivity boost from info-tech is real but already spent.

On the other hand, by 2060 countries such as Sweden will have levels of inequality currently seen in the USA. Think:

  • Gary, Indiana, in the suburbs of Stockholm.
  • Los Angeles and Detroit look like Manila – abject slums alongside guarded skyscrapers.
