Carling Family Jazz Odyssey (album)

Carling Family (2024)

I assume it's 2024.

Songs:
1. King porter stomp
2. Black bottom stomp
3. Cannon ball blues
4. The chant
5. Buddy bolden’s blues
6. Save it pretty mama
7. ALAMEDA
8. I’LL BE A FRIEND WITH PLEASURE
9. HOOSIER SWEETHEART
10. THE JAZZ RECORDER
11. STARDUST

I'm going to assume that the people pictured are the musicians on the album. I'm also going to assume I can correctly recognize them. So Gunhild lying on the piano. Gerd (gunhild's sister) playing the piano. Viggo (Gunhild's son) on the banjo (because he's blonde and young). Aina (Gunhild's mother), also on banjo. Idun (Gunhild's daughter) on trombone. Max (Gunhild's older brother) on clarinet. Ulf (Gunhild's younger brother) on drums. I suspect Gunhild drew the album cover.

Fidgety Feet

The Dutch Swing College Orchestra (1948)

The Dutch Swing College Band (on this record label, Dutch Swing College Orchestra) was one of the great hot bands. I should have posted something by them before now. Apparently they're still around, though not with the same personnel as in 1948. "Fidgety Feet" is one of several hot music standards by LaRocca and Shields. This tune was written no later than 1918. All the hot bands performed it: Kid Ory, Red Allen, Wingy Manone, Bud Freeman, etc.

Jazz Me Blues

Gunhild, Nanna, Petronella, and Linnea Carling (in Italy)

OMG! I just discovered Gunhild (seen here on trumpet) yesterday. She's amazing. She's Swedish, and, apparently, better known as a trombone player. She came here to Northern California just in time for the pandemic. Not the best time to start a career in a new country.

"Jazz Me Blues" is a jot music standard. I posted a record of it from 1945 by Wild Bill Davison and his Commodores, This tune was written by Tom Delaney in 1920. All the great tunes come from the 1920s.

I've Found a New Baby

Joe Venuti's Blue Four (1931)

This takes almost half a minute to get up to speed, but then it really takes off. This really swings, so I'm also going to tag it as swing.

There was also Joe Venuti's Five and Six. I'm not sure who performs on this recording. Venuti on violin, certainly, and the guitar, we can safely assume, is Eddie Lang. It's probably Frankie Trumbauer or Jimmy Dorsey on sax. The piano? Hard to say.
