Stanley Kubrick was only nineteen years old when he took this photograph.
- Stanley Kubrick was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and photographer. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. His films were nearly all adaptations of novels or short stories, spanning a number of genres and gaining recognition for their intense attention to detail, innovative cinematography, extensive set design, and dark humor.

Unfortunately its soundtrack isn't in the public domain, so I edited together a new freely available soundtrack from modern creative commons and public domain tracks.

Last day of Love and Anarchy film festival for me! Was a good bunch of films and documentaries. Many of them sad stories, of places and people with little hope for a future. It's important to see these kind of stories to remind oneself of how a privileged life one is living.

Tatami

Leila is a judoka in the Iran national team, participating in the Judo world championships in Georgia. Everything starts going out well and it looks like there is a strong chance for a gold medal. When there is a possibility she will have to face an athlete from Israel in the final, politics comes into play and things start going wrong.

A touching story of willpower and fighting for your rights as a human being. Includes lots of tatami action.

The Shameless

After killing a police chief customer in a Delhi brothel she works at, Renuka is forced to flee to a smaller town. There in a community of sex workers she meets 17 year old girl Devika, who has yet to have been initiated into the trade. They fall in love, fighting both against Devika's family but also the patriarchy which not only wont accept them, but wants to destroy them.

To a land unknown

Two Palestinian migrants on their way to Germany end up stuck in Athens after their smuggler ripped them off. Needing money for passports, they steal, rob and eventually end up in more and more dangerous schemes.

A story of struggling to keep your humanity when all has been taken away from you.

Today two productions at Love and Anarchy.

Limbo

Detective Travis Hurley gets sent to evaluate reopening of an old case in a small mining town in the outback of Australia. The old disappearance of Charlotte takes us through the town, slowly building the story of families torn apart in a town plagued by racial injustice. A broken detective may not be able to solve the old case, but will it be possible to heal the old wounds and bring families back together?

The film features and endless amount of bare dry scenery in and around the old opal mining town. Shooting it fully in gray scale brings a nice touch that blends everything into the background, stripping away all the colour, all the joy taken away, just like from the townsfolk and the detective themselves.

No other land

A documentary by four activists, Palestinian and Israeli, filming the torment of the Palestinian population of "Masafer Yatta" [1] in the West Bank by the Israeli military and settlers. Lands forcefully confiscated by Israel to make space for their own settlers in the region. Houses are demolished, only to be rebuilt in secret during the night. Power generators are confiscated and wells filled in with concrete, all to force the villagers to leave the area. When you resist, you are shot. What ends up being more dangerous to the villagers are the armed Israeli settlers who do attacks against the Palestinians, with the Israeli forces watching by.

I can't say this more clearly: Fuck the Israel terrorist state.

Today I saw two Love and Anarchy films, and they were both seriously weird. It's great when you walk out of the movie theater into the street and for a while just forget all about the ugliness of society around you, your mind processing all that audiovisual information you were just blasted with. I love this festival.

La bête (The beast)

I don't know what to think of this film. There was a lot of trying to figure out what exactly is happening, and more importantly when. As if in a dream, the film jumped (or did it?) between time, connecting two people, Gabrielle and Louis, wrapping them in a deep love story over space and time. In constant fear of tragedy just around the corner, never quite becoming the love story that you are constantly waiting to happen.

Beautiful filming, great screenplay and lots of mind warping jumps in the story, including some jump scares to keep the audience from getting too comfortable.

Infinite summer

Filmed in beautiful Estonia the film follows two teenagers as they spend their summer holiday at a cottage, catching up on their friendship and the challenges growing up causes. Feeling a loss of connection one of them connects to "Doctor Mindfulness", through an enhanced reality dating app. What they get is not quite what the scruffy mind expanding doctor promised.

There are several layers to this film, and I'm happy I stuck around for the director Q&A to get those clarified. On the one hand we have a teenager growth story, on the other hand we have a scare story of technology going horribly wrong. Or are things going wrong? Or is this a growth story of humanity as well, transcending into something else. Maybe not better, maybe not worse, but different. We are not told, and there probably is no answer.

Kneecap

First Love and Anarchy festival film for me this year, a part of the "Spotlight Selection". And I can see why. I think this film will easily go into the top list of films I've seen in recent years.

Telling the story of "Kneecap" [1], a real world hip-hop trio who rhyme in a mixture of Irish and English, acted by the band members, but in a fictional way. Based on Wikipedia there are many elements of the film that borrow from their real world journey. Whether this includes the outlandish drug use or being in the middle of republican militants and British imperialist police forces I can't say based on the article. However, it is all put together really well, conveying the most important message of all: fuck both of them. Humour is a central building block while tackling a difficult subject.

The Irish language and the right to use it is a central carrying theme through the film. Thanks to British imperialism the language only received official status in Northern Ireland in 2022. The film ends with a sad reminder that every 40 days an indigenous language dies [2].

Just came back from watching #AlienRomulus. Without giving away any spoilers, I think it's a creditable addition to the canon and tries to tie in most of the films made before it. There are also a couple of interesting "guest" appearances. It's not really horror like the 1979 original, just a few minor jump scares and some gore; I'd say it's more an action film.

Favorite German-language Films

I have seen very few of these. What others should I try to see?

Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run)

directed by Tom Tykwer

This is so clever and inventive, it's hard not to enjoy.

Das Boot (The Boat)

directed by Wolfgang Petersen

The greatest submarine movie ever made. I'm convinced that this is what diesel boats were like in WWII, and I'm glad I never set foot in one.

Favorite Japanese-language Films

I've seen many more of these.

大病人 (Daibyonin or The Last Dance)

directed by 伊丹 十三 (Juzo Itami)

This was the first film I saw in Japan where I got the gist of every conversation. It gave me more confidence in my Japanese. Then I saw お葬式 (The Funeral) by the same director and was completely lost. I think that was due to the Kansai dialect. The film is about the last year in the life of an old actor dying of cancer. It's about telling patients the truth about their illnesses, which was not always done in Japan at the time.

天空の城ラピュタ (Laputa, Castle in the Sky)

directed by 宮崎 駿 (Hayao Miyazaki)

In the film, Jonathan Swift's Laputa is a real place. A castle floating in the air. Some international intrigue results in some young people actually going to it. Miyazaki has made several very good films, but this is still my favorite of all of them.

What about the rest of you? Any good films in a language other than your first that made a big impression?

All these films should have articles on Wikipedia. I've seen all of these except Jamaica Inn, which I'm downloading now. I recommend all the films in this list.

You can also watch them in your browser without looking at a YouTube page by replacing watch?v= with embed/. E.g., https://www.youtube.com/embed/yrFGw4vj9d4. This makes them full-page in your browser.
